Randolph’s Leap Share BMH

I’ve really enjoyed all the work from Randolph’s Leap leading up to their new album, Spirit Level. But, having had a bit of time to absorb this new one, I have no qualms saying its my favorite of the bunch. It reminds of the old Austin band Hollywood Gossip; just imagine Belle and Sebastian rushing through a tune just to cram it in under 3 minutes. I love that they don’t stray away from arrangements here with the horns, even though it definitely has the feel of more of a rock tune. This new LP is dropping on February 26th via Fika Recordings.

Graham Hunt Announces Painting Over Mold

You might recognize Graham Hunt‘s name as a member of Midnight Reruns, but he’s no stranger to working the solo route; he’s preparing another LP for Forged Artifacts titled Painting Over Mold. At times, the portrayal of this song has a bit of Parquet Courts, at least in regards to the manner in which Hunt delivers his vocals; it has this sort of straightforward enunciation, except when it comes the chorus. In the chorus, you throw in some of that Americana flare and it almost sounds like there’s a bit of Old 97s country stomping pop feels hanging about. The new record hits the street on February 26th, with a limited run on red cassette.

Dentist Share Don’t Let Me Catch You Video

While it opens with a nod to the Misfits (you hear it too right?), Dentist speed ahead to their sugar sweet pop antics almost immediately. The riffs steel feel very heavy, but Emily’s voice atop the mix really has this coy, angelic quality, particularly when she’s dropping out those “ooh ooh ooh oohs” through the chorus. This is the first new music we get to hear from the band as they prepare to release their next LP later this year; you can be sure we’ll have more on that at a later date. For now, enjoy the song and the video as you start your Monday.

Mope City Share Rocket Surgery

Ever just wanna get in your feelings? Well, have you tried listen to Sydney outfit Mope City? I’m quite partial to their 2019 LP News from Home, but this new single is pretty much putting me into a one track state of mind. Just imagine the abandoned child of Low and Bedhead being left on your record player. There’s distorted edges, barely shaking your speakers, careful not to overplay against the underlying melody. This new jam features on the band’s forthcoming LP for Tenth Court, Within the Walls, which drops on April 30th, but the Rocket Surgery EP has three bonus tracks recorded during that session that will certainly put you in the mood for what’s in store here!

Villa Boas Share Tora Single featuring Stella

The wonders of the digital age are that there’s so much musical material just waiting to be revisited, like this Villa Boas tune; it features Greek artists Stella, but while its being unearthed today, it was actually recorded in 2018 before her star began to rise. It’s got this sort of sloppy house party punk rock vibe; the sort that is energetic and kitschy all at once; its got enough edge to get everyone slam dancing but enough pop that your neighbors won’t be telling you to turn it down. Plus, it’s being released with this great street skate video with members of the Lovers Skate Collective, putting the Athenian culture on full display. It’s all been part of a huge collaborative effort by the Villa Boas crew, with more joint hits available HERE.

Flyying Colours Ready Fantasy Country LP

We’re all looking around the world today, hopefully; looking at all the hard work artists have put into making our lives better. One group I’ve been digging on, who just recently announced their new LP, is Melbourne’s Flyying Colours; they’ll be releasing Fantasy Country at the end of the February via Poison City. The single below is the latest off the forthcoming album, and honestly, its got me punch-dancing around my classroom as I await my students. The tune’s propulsive in nature, with just the right amount of guitar screeching to make it more than your average affair. I love the dual vocal harmonizing, creating this softness in an otherwise upbeat pop rock affair. The LP drops on February 26th!

Phantom Handshakes Share No Better Plan

Having released their Be Estranged EP last year, Phantom Handshakes are ready to drop their debut full-length in 2021, and we’ve got one of the new singles to share with you. Spending a lot of time listening to indiepop, you can’t help but immediately be drawn to that synthesized beat working over darkened guitar lines that curl and bop their way through your ear holes. Federica Tassano has this endearing voice too, hanging low with this coat over it that matches the mood of those aforementioned guitar licks; the tone changes to a more crystalized polish at the track moves into the chorus, bringing in this almost childish euphoria that only stands to make folks swoon. Their debut LP will be out later this year via Z Tapes.

IIawgne Shares Golden Soul

Swedish musician/producer Mathias Engwall is set to release his Nevereverie LP under the llawgne moniker. For me, the attraction initially was steeped in the deep construction of the tune, building these extravagant layers of bubblegum pop. But, the trick employed here, is that Engwall disguises those layers in this sort of atmospheric wash that sort of reimagines classic 60s era pop through a more modern lens. At times it feels heavy and psychedelic, yet still pulled in by this gravitational pop pull that builds and swells, sort of like the pop version of Papercuts…which is a great compliment. Be on the lookout for this LP later in the year.

Swansea Sound Share Indies of the World Single

Fresh off selling their soul on E-Bay, Swansea Sound return with another solid single to add to your collection of pop music. They’ve always got great messaging, and here they seem to be calling to arms all the indie labels to unite! I’m on board! Musically, you can’t really argue with the back and forth between Hue and Amelia; how does Amelia’s voice sound so timeless and pristine? Put all that sugary melody together with the bop of Rob and Ian, and the band have another certified hit on their hand. This tune appears on the group’s new 7″, dropping on March 12th via Skep Wax and HHBTM!

Hadda Be Announce Another Life

If you’re looking for a little bit of dreamy pop combined with sprinkles of 90s rock, then boy have I got the band for you today: Hadda Be! They’re the newest act on powerhouse label Last Night from Glasgow, and I can’t get over this jam. It’s got just a hint of swagger that nods at punk, but these arena rock feels that make it sound huge; you feel like you’re surrounded by hoards of fans clamoring to hear those huge riffs billow through the speaker stacks. Some rock just feels timeless, feels like it could bridge any genre, any emotion; this tune is one such track, and thus should be the highlight of your listening experience today. Look for Another Life to drop on April 30th.
