Gorgeous Bully Share Sick of Everything

I’ve always been a huge fan of Gorgeous Bully, and since 2018’s Closure, the project has mostly been quiet…though that doesn’t necessarily mean songs haven’t been written. Today we get to hear one of those, and while brief, its exactly the stuff I love about this band. It’s just a really straight-forward rock tune, with a heavy strum and a theme I think the entire world can relate to over this past year. The perfect hint of fuzz on the vocals is quite endearing too, just pumping in the hooks. Looking forward to hearing more as the year goes on!

El No Share Move In Twos Video

Nate Farley and Craig Nichols have an envious musical resume (GBV, Bellringer, Breeders), but currently split between Texas and Ohio, these two El No founders had to find some middle ground to flesh out their latest LP, Nothing is Possible. They managed to find some middle ground in Memphis, dragging a handful of demos to flesh out their record together in one place. You can feel that energy in the “Move In Twos,” with the opening guitar line feeling itself like an endless journey down dark highways. But, as the white flickers from the video and the drums stomp, the song takes on this communal feel, the sound of friendship being birthed before your ears. The visualizer has this hypnotic effect, flashing white in the midst of a black backdrop, somehow still giving off a warm glow that encapsulates the song’s natural emotion. Look for Nothing is Possible on April 1st via Overthought Musik.

PACKS Drop Silvertongue + Announce Take the Cake

For many of us, “Silvertongue” is our first listen to PACKS, and what a way to start things off! It’s 3 minutes of fuzzy riffs and cooled vocals that announce the band as an act we should all have on our radar this year. Personally, I love the space the song gives to the guitar work, letting it ring out in various spots to keep the edge of the song there as singer Madeline Links lets her voice fade atop those riffs; it just gives the song more of a distinct feel, like it’s not being dialed in with a formula. My two cents anyways. Plus, better news is Take the Cake, the debut LP, will be out on May 21st via Fire Talk/Royal Mountain.

Alex Rieglman Shares Animal Ending

Our good friend Alex Riegleman is one of the members of our (and your) faves Big Bill. But, he’s been afforded the time to work on some tunes of his own, and we’d love to share one of those tracks with you today. The song doesn’t waste anytime pushing right into it, kind of like a classic rock meets Jeffrey Lewis; it employs traditional songwriting with Alex’s penchant for melody and creative wordplay. I love the heavy brief guitar solo in the tune’s middle, breaking up the style just enough to keep the song from growing stale. We’re always stoked to see what our friends are working on, aren’t you?

Fresh Share Girl Clout

As Spring begins to roll out, I have this natural inclination towards hook-laden pop punk, a la Spook School or or Marth…and today, there’s a new tune from Fresh. The London outfit blast through this with furious speed and pounding rhythm, stylistically stepping in line with the aforementioned bands, both punchy and hook-laden. Lyrically, Kathryn Woods takes aim at the musical patriarchy and faux allies going through the motions, begging the men and music fans in general to be better. The song rips, and so do the words, so spend a little time letting the song tear through your speakers. It’s good for you.

Catching Up with Fishboy

I’ve covered Fishboy on and off since we’ve been running this wee site, but Eric Michener’s so prolific that it’s admittedly tough to always stay up to date (that’s on me!). But, there’s a new record coming your way really soon titled Waitsgiving, and though I’m a few weeks late, why not celebrate that news hitting my desk by sharing this video! The music reminds me of a combination of Jay Reatard and Grandaddy, but maybe with the sort of idiosyncrasies in the lyrical playfulness included (which is the stable Fishboy mark!) with this earnest delivery. But, not sure which is greater, the song of the rad video? You decide! Then be sure to grab the LP, as it drops on April 2nd via Lauren Records.

Sweet Whirl + Gregor Cover Have You Ever Seen the Rain

Generally speaking, I shy away from cover songs; it’s just not my thing. But, who doesn’t have a soft spot for “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” Plus, who wouldn’t love to hear their favorite up and coming artists, like Sweet Whirl and Gregor unite to put their spin on it. The duo turn the classic rock ballad into this slinking synth pop snake that weaves its way into your brain, somehow nestling right next to the original. I love the dense combination of the vocals during the chorus, giving a heaviness to those notes, rather than letting them soar wistfully as they do in Credence’s version. Both artists are also great in their own right, so be sure to visit their solo work as well…all if you can find with Chapter Music!

Marble Raft Release Divided Sea

If you’re looking for the perfect piece of pop, you can generally rely on the good people of Sweden to help, like new outfit Marble Raft. The duo of experienced musical vets have been crafting their sound the last few years, built on the concept of pop and fables. This single is our first listen, with the band Olle and Gabrielle trading vocals throughout, uniting during the chorus to create the band’s natural euphoric feeling buoyed by heavy synth flourishes and atmospheric washes. In need of a little Monday morning warmth? Turn this one up, and be on the look out for Geography, which drops on May 7th.

Unschooling Share Social Chameleon Video

Listen, if you’re a fan of Omni, and the way they have those sharp danceable guitar cuts, then you’re going to love French outfit, Unschooling. For much of their new tune, it’s almost a solid carbon copy, even down to that sort of sedate vocal delivery. But, what I like about this lot is how they seem to kind of get frantic, anxious almost, forcing them to push the envelope as the song progresses. Then at the 2 minute mark, they’re like “nah, we’re going to turn this into a pop tune!” Nice twist, and has me stoked to hear the group’s Random Acts of Total Control, out on April 16th via Howlin Banana.

Gabo Release Corre Rua

Gabo is a new artists hailing from Brazil who has just signed on with Living Waters to release his forthcoming EP, Bicicleta Sem Rodinha. Gabriel Islaz is obviously incorporating some of those indie sounds I tend to fawn over, from the light jangles to the dreamy quality of the vocal delivery; its got that feeling of being hit by warmth as soon as you step out into the sun. It’s a cool casual drift into your work week, and a way to dip your toes into a fresh new artists working on a sound we love. Look for the EP to drop on April 9th!
