Pink Chameleons Share Slow Me Single

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the new Pink Chameleons was a nod to 90s rock n’ roll styles; I mean, you can’t run from those opening riffs! But, as evidenced by the brash strut of the saxophone and the effects of the vocals, you can tell the band aren’t here to rehash anything in particular; they’re building their own sound, something akin to what leader Paltsa-Kai calls “arty-psych.” Indeed you can hear that blending of sounds as those thundering riffs crash into the underwater vocals, like being tossed and turned in the undercurrent of the sea, flipping you this way and that…musically speaking of course. Taking such an approach will surely gift listeners a creative listen when the group drop their forthcoming Peace & Love LP via Soliti on May 21st!

Liars Announce The Apple Drop

I really wonder if we’ll all look back sometime and realize just how incredible the shape-shifting ways of Angus and Liars truly was; I know thinking back on They Threw Us All in a Trench… that I couldn’t have imagined where the band would have ended up some 20 years later. Still, I have a soft spot for Angus’ approach, and this round it seems he embraced collaboration in the earliest stage, pulling in jazz drummers and multi-instrumentalists to fill out the soundscape he’s envisioned. The song operates with this throbbing heartbeat, darkened by synth notes and Angus’ haunting delivery, but as it unwinds, drumming becomes erratic in nature, off-beat even at times…every stone overturned reveals a new musical perspective. Personally, the melodic vocals just after the 2 minute mark are my personal highlight here…but that’s just basic old me. This tune appears on The Apple Drop, the new LP hitting on August 6th via Mute.

Smile Too Much Share What I Want You To Do (So Do)

We’re already looking ahead towards Friday, and with that in mind, we’ve got a release on Friday from Smile Too Much that I’d like you to keep on your radar. The lead single has the best juxtaposition you could ask for, combining a strong mix of fuzzed out gazing-guitars matched up with the calmed bubblegum pop of Maggie Aytac (ex-Heartlights) voice. I love the guitar line that seems to kind of weave its own story amid the contrasting imagery of the song, serving as this alternative lifeblood to the song’s middle section. If you like what’re you’re hearing from the Oakland outfit, look for their debut self-titled EP via Dandy Boy Records.

William Denton Wilde Shares We Are the Virus

Through the years I’ve managed to make tons of Internet friends all over the world, and with the help of some mates over in Newcastle, we’ve been hipped to William Denton Wilde. Wilde crafts this dark edged electro pop, dipped perfectly in the histrionics of post-punk. When this song opens, its synth stabs and a thundering drum beat, waiting for the vocals to share their message about humanities indifference to its faults. What caught me, however, was the way the song rolled out with a pulsing line just after the 1 minute mark adding some texture to the tune, which is the tiniest of detail that gives the song that added punch to make it memorable. Look for more on this act in the coming months.

Egghunt Records Sign Lizzie Loveless

You might recognize Lizzie Loveless as one of the members of TEEN, but she’s out on her own and teaming up with Egghunt Records to bring you her new record come this September. Personally, I love that the song seems to have two sides to it, perhaps alluding to Lizzie’s sentiment about spiraling out of control as you fall too deeply in love with someone. The front half is steady, like a darker version of the Blow, using catching rhythms and a real sleek vocal that teases you to join in the fun. Then the beat and the pace thicken, textures are added and the song spirals in a different direction, almost a meditative pop hook that’s more like a heavy 80s dance party. This is for sure a jam, and they’ll be releasing You Don’t Know in September.

Silver Firs Return!

Our Bern, Switzerland based friends in Silver Firs were really lighting up our pages with stellar music way back in 2013/2014. Since that time, the band was on an lengthy hiatus so it was a bit shocking, and exciting, to hear new music from the band after 7+ years away from the scene. Their first new single after the hiatus, “Now We Start to See the Beauty”, was well worth the long wait and leaves me wanting to immediately hear more. The track starts as a slow burning, melodic tune but eventually builds into this dreamy and lovely pop tune. Can’t wait to hear more!

Silver Firs will release this track on a new EP entitled Lake Hypoxia out on June 18th.

Lost Ships Drop Nostalgia

Follow our site? Well, then you’ve likely seen us supporting Portsmouth’s Lost Ships band; they just released the Nostalgia EP via Subjangle Sounds. The group, in my opinion, likes to walk a fine line between jangling indiepop and classic power pop sounds. In this listen, you’ll get heavy riffs, fuzzy of course, but they can quickly turn things light-hearted and toe-tapping in a heartbeat. Take “Shirley from Shirley,” opening with more of a soft brood over heavy circling guitars and melodic “ahhs;” then those sharp riffs dance their way into your living room, forcing your hips to swing and your feet to shuffle. Thinking that “Inside My Head” might be my favorite of this lot, just an energetic bop the whole way through, and I can’t wait for you to enjoy it too! Stream the EP or buy it HERE.

Stream Ama’s Both/And Album

We’ve really tried to make sure that Ama was on your radar throughout the last few years; Blair Robbins’ project has been one of my absolute faves for some time now…so here we are with the band dropping Both/And over the weekend. You might catch the homage to Elliott Smith in the record’s title, but I assure you the songwriting here is far more than a mere nod. Take my favorite track, “I See You See,” with it’s wind-swept guitar notes and airy vocal performance; the chorus has these notes that will draw in fans of Alvvays and the like. I’ll be honest, I spent a lot of time with this whole LP this weekend, and its honestly one of the most complete records you’re going to hear this week…each song’s a separate hit.
