Check the Latest from Smoke Bellow

The first minute or so of this new Smoke Bellow tune is sort of this meditative mood, like there’s been a glitch in the Matrix and we’re all just biding time as we watched the giant-headed characters on the screen. Meredith McHugh conducts here voice like she’s welcoming you to some sort of psychedelic retreat, a sort of softened mantra that beckons you to fall deep into the contemplative nature of this tune. You look up on the screen, and you’re united by the rest of the big heads, taking part in the joyousness of sonic exploration. I love how just as I think I’ve got this lot figured out, they take a turn and lead me somewhere else. I’ll gladly follow to the release of Open for Business, out next week via Trouble in Mind Records.

Constant Follower Share Weave of the World

We’re starting to move into those cooler evenings (you know, dropping to the low 90s), so stumbling into the latest from Constant Follower seems the perfect way to move into the Fall. For starters, we don’t have to wait before we meet the careful craft of Stephen McAll; he offers himself to the listener, laying his soul before us. He drapes it all over this mild-mannered guitar work, leaving plenty of space in the song’s middle for us all to take stock of our lives and what we’ve got going around us. This song appears on Neither Is, Nor Ever Was, which drops in October via Shimmy Disc/Joyful Noise.

Central Heat Exchange Share Dusty Glass

Okay, so this song’s been bouncing around for a day or so, but give a fella a break; I just had a kid, and I’m still here writing about my friends music. The glorious supergroup Central Heat Exchange dropped this tune, letting a little light sine on our lives. Every time the group shares a new single, I’m so impressed and overwhelmed by the balance between the guitar work and the pleasantness of whoever is chosen to helm the vocals; they’re reaching softened melody like no one else at the moment, continuing to deliver promise for their LP, which drops today via Citrus City, Birthday Cake Media and Sunroom Records.

Power Supply Announce Debut Album

If you’re up on your Aussie hit-making machines, you probably have heard of Ooga Boogas, and if not, you’ve probably heard other projects by the members (most notably Mikey Young). But, when the band broke up, Leon Stackpole went about writing his own tunes, then recruited a bunch of friends to play with him under the name Power Supply. We’ve got a new single with the announcement of their debut LP, In the Time of the Sabre-Toothed Tiger, and man, this just feels like exactly what I’ve been looking for these days. Throughout, the song sort of has this rolling gallop to it, with the lyrics sort of weaving in nonsensical elements to kind of craft its very own theme. For some reason, I keep thinking of this tune as a Joanthan Richman tracked channeled through a Robert Pollard drinking session. Try it on for yourself! The LP drops October 22nd via Goner Records.

Keg Share Presidential Walk

We’ve found ourselves jamming to Keg quite a bit this year, and with a new EP on the horizon, perhaps we should share a bit of that joy with you. The Brighton outfit will surely get you some Shame comparisons, but there ability to flesh those sounds beyond is due to the group carrying 7 members in their pocket. You’ll get that angular post punk guidance, that sharp bob and weave delivery. But, the most exciting elements come when various members decide to toy with the song’s DNA, weaving in elements of jazz and post-rock into the band’s exploratory adventure. You’ll find this group on tour with Squid, where you can grab their Assembly EP, out October 22nd via Alcopop.

American Friend Drop Sound Under Rock

Austin’s American Friend have been around for a few years, though the pedigree of the musicians in the group goes way back in time. Today the trio drops their brand new Sound Under Rock EP, and perhaps you’ll join me in spending a little bit of your time with it today. Initially, Sarah’s bass grooves in the opener “Where I Came From” had me feeling nostalgic, leaning towards Adam’s other project, matched up against muted guitar notes with Jana’s voice toying with tone/inflection. They bring in the slow-core on “Greatest Mountain,” which definitely feels, to me, like a Jana excursion. But, it all seems like a set up, teasing tension before we get to the spirited performance in “Troubles.” That should prepare you for half your listen, but I don’t want to dive to deep and give away all the secrets. Find out for yourself!

Find Your Zen With Explosions in the Sky

It’s still a bit early on Thursday morning here, and if you’re having a bit of a rough week like me, might I suggest checking out this new track from our old ATX friends Explosions in the Sky. At this point in their career, EITS are legends in the local music scene as well as incredibly popular outside of Austin. If they hung it up now, they’d already have an incredible body of work to call their own. But of course the guys will ever press forward and continue to expand their sound with new music via soundtrack or full length album. The latest from Explosions is a beautiful soundtrack to accompany the even more beautiful and breathtaking PBS documentary Big Bend: The Wild Frontier of Texas. The documentary in itself is a lovely piece of film which captures the natural beauty of our greatest state park. Add in the sounds of EITS and you’ll find yourself captivated and drawn in to the sights of nature along with the ever trance inducing musical sounds. Here is one of the singles from the soundtrack for your zen moment this morning, “Flying”.

Explosions in the Sky will be releasing the Big Bend soundtrack physically via Temporary Residence. Those pre-orders are live now!

The Hepburns with Estella Rosa (of Nah)

Despite the tragic circumstances we find ourselves in, this pandemic has brought us some really great projects that seem to have sprung out of the need to create, like this new tune from the Hepburns, featuring Estella Rosa of indiepop outfit Nah. Pressing play, you will find that the band adhere to a sort of jazzy lounge version of indie pop, where the jangles are a bit more subtle and the vocals have a little more pizzaz. It doesn’t hurt that Estella lends her melodic notes here, almost as if she’s joining the band in the roll of full-time back-up singer…though her performance is anything but. The song will feature on the joint venture between the two called Architecture of the Ages, out soon via Elefant Records.

Astral Brain Share Five Thousand Miles

You’ve got to leave it to Shelflife Records for their continuous output of acts that are mostly completely new to me. Just take a listen to the lead single from Swedish outfit, Astral Brain, who will be releasing the Bewildered Mind this October via the US label. When it begins, the vocal performance from singer Siri tends to waver back and forth between pastoral and baroque. But, at the minute mark, the song just lifts off, lifting you spiritually out of your chair and into the dreamy caverns of the soundscape created by Einar Ekstrom. Siri’s voice is the perfect foil for Ekstrom’s work, at times, her control of melody doesn’t even require words, merely spinning out charming monosyllabic notes to make you swoon. This gem of an LP will be out on October 15th, you can order it HERE!

Banger From Mother Ghost

Oscar and Thomas Flores are a brother duo from Houston who record under the moniker Mother Ghost. As our brothers to the east, we are happy to report that the boys have recently wrapped up their debut full length LP with plans to drop it later this week. Prior to the end of the week, we are pleased to blast this new singled called “Mother Ghost”. It’s sort of a dark, brooding take on new wave with an incredibly slick baseline and a hauntingly similar sound to a certain Wang Chung song (if it was slowed down and turned into horror pop). Help me in supporting our new friends over in H-Town.

Mother Ghost will release Somnmbulo this Friday, September 10th via Geodesic Records.
