His His Shares In the Wind

The air in Austin got a little crisp overnight, and with a holiday break on the horizon, well, my students are mentally already there. So, to prepare myself, I needed something a little soothing and calm, which is great because I’ve been sitting on this great new His His tune for a few days now. There’s something in the guitar play that recalls Kings of Convenience, but it also has this unique knack of adding in these little bedroom pop details that elevate the tune. It’s one of those songs you just want to sit with for a bit, kind of ride out the storm of your life with the track lurking in the background.

Papercuts Share Cover of The Partisan

A few weeks ago we brought you a new track from Papercuts, and with that, we talked about how the new Baxter’s Bliss EP would have a few covers you’d want to enjoy. So, here we are with Jason’s cover of “The Partisan,” originally written by Anna Marley, but made popular by some guy named Leonard Cohen, which is the version that inspired this tune. Aside from being a song about anti-fascism, the way Quever does his production just always seeps into my soul, with those string arrangements brushed against this thunderous drum bat, all set to a dark shadowy film. If you dig it, the new EP is out this Friday!

Suep Share Video for Misery

With ties to Joanna Gruesome and Porridge Radio, it would make sense that SUEP would fall on our radar, and here they drop in with a brand new video for their single “Misery.” But, one of the things about being tied to other bands is that it tends to shadow expectations, so put those aside and slide into the Suep’s DMs, as they’ve got something going on here. There’s this lounge bounce, almost a jazz-inflected pop ditty, with crooned vocals swirling as the band build layer upon layer of pop sensibility. They employ various electronic and psychedelic notes, twist them up with backing vocals and then present it in a tripped out video format. If you were into the work of Jonathan Bree, well, this band takes that and stretches it into a fashionable pop spectacle. Keep an eye out here, and we’ll keep you posted if we hear more! Salt Lake Alley Announce It Takes Two

The year’s had some great pop tune, though I’ll be honest, as I’m not quite sure that anything’s really delivered the supreme jangle that I deserve! Well, that all changes today when Salt Lake Alley announce their sophomore LP, on Shelflife no less! From the moment you press play the guitars skate and shimmy, sort of skirting around you speakers as the beat bounces lightly in the background. I love how Mikael and Gustav seem to be trading off vocal roles on this song, adding this real dynamic punch that charms a pop fan like myself. Oh, and please please hang out just pass the 1:37 mark as there’s one hell of a guitar solo just waiting to make you swoon over the hooks. Their new LP, It Takes Two won’t be out until 2022, but you can enjoy the first sample below!

Gabriel Bernini Shares Love Will Never Be The Same Video

In case you missed Gabriel Bernini‘s latest LP, we’re hear to remind you that it’s never too late to dive deep into a great record; I’m here to convince you to enjoy You Got Me! What better way to get you leaning in than by sharing a brand new video for standout tune “Love Will Never Be the Same.” The entirety of the new album is definitely channeling chilled out vibes, with Bernini drawing inspiration from JJ Cale, Neil Young and the like; you can hear some of that expansive arrangements on this number, slightly shaking and stomping in the background while Gabe soothes with this gentle drawl on the front of the mix. This track has this sort of resonating warmth, which sort of speaks to the record as a whole, so if you’re seeking the fireside comforts of a good LP, then be sure get a copy of this from Dadstache Records.

Kindsight Share Don’t You Grow Up Single

I’ve been writing about the stuff on Rama Lama Records for some time, and their newest singing Kindsight definitely has my attention today as they drop a brand new single. The track has these pop rock grooves, recalling the best days of early alternative rock from the early 90s…though updated with hints of jangle and bits of distortion. Still, the star has to be Nina Rasmussen, belting out these powerful notes throughout the song’s entirety. At times, she feels calm and rested, only to unleash these curling charms in the chorus that rise up and down in the most intoxicating fashion. Rumor has it that a debut is coming out next year!

Keg Drop New Video for Farmhands

I’ve been really keen on Keg these last few months, as the band’s Assembly EP ruled, and they just don’t seem to be slowing down for anything at all. Today they’ve just put out a great new video for accompaniment to one of the standout tunes “Farmhands,” which takes the band to a fictional village. Alone, awesome, but then there’s the song. They hit upon the current fashion of sort of spoken-word post-punk, where the delivery’s very matter of fact, but everything moving behind is key. But, unlike many of their counterparts, they seem to be getting things a bit weirder here; they almost seem like they’re kind of pushing a proto-post-punk, dabbling in the mix with electronic soundscapes. Just keep an eye on this bunch, as they haven’t missed yet.

Lunar Isles Share Breathe

Lunar Isles is the moniker of David Skimming, a Scot in South Korea crafting some delicious dreamy pop tunes you’re going to want on your radar. Earlier this year he dropped Tides, his debut LP, and we just got Mirror Shapes this past Friday. We wanted to focus on the standout, “Breathe,” as I fell in love with the guitar lines here; it sets up this openness that allows for a gentle floating vocal to cruise across the song’s entirety. If you’re looking for something just on the cusp of jangle, flirting with pop all the way through, then go give this jam a listen, or dive all the way into the new LP.

Abram Shook Drops Coconut Rum

Our good old friend Abram Shook has sure mixed things up since his early days in the Great Nostalgic, with a high energy push towards the purity of pop with his last few releases. Today, we’re sharing the latest single from the Austin songwriter, and it’s definitely a hook-laden toe-tapping jam; if you can’t feel this one, then we’re of no help. Abram’s joined on vocal duties by Camille Lewis of Dead Recipe, layering the song in a playfulness as the two spar back and forth…plus its nice to see Christopher Cox getting in on the mix too! Turn it up, and let’s tear it up; it’s Tuesday!

Weakened Friends Release Final Single off Quitter LP

I’m obviously really high upon the forthcoming LP from Maine’s Weakened Things, and it’s going to be one of my favorite pop rock records to pick up this year. Today we’ve got the last single before Quitter hits the streets, and I think this might have the best set-up yet. It takes off slow with Sonia Sturino seemingly operating solo, working her distinctive vocals atop careful guitar notes; the song still seems muted when Annie and Adam join up to flesh out the sound…but, everything still seems slightly muted, only building the natural tension for the listener. Don’t worry listeners, as the trio unleash their power around the 1 minute mark with another delicious chorus that’s been making this LP a surefire singalong when it drops. Speaking of releases, Quitter is out Friday via Don Giovanni/Big Scary Monsters.
