Verandan Share Night Single

With a few singles under their belt in 2021, Finnish outfit Verandan have one final tune to close out the year, appearing on a compilation for Spanish label Kocliko. This tune doesn’t stray too far from the band’s sound, creating this natural softness that leaves tons of open space for reflective notes; it does feel like its something Phil Collins would have had his hands in crafting. Ville’s voice is just magical here, and I can’t get enough of each little note as it curls around the dense musical underbelly. The group are working on a new album for next year, so keep your eyes and ears peeled for that news!

The Latest Tunes from Pazz Kluger

While we were all clamoring for year end magic (really we should all just be listening to more War on Drugs, right?!), I’ve been going back through emails and notes from friend, which is where I came into this Pazz Kluger tune from the recent Fairy Tales EP. It’s filled by this sound that reminds me a lot of the Black Watch, taking notes from dark wave and post-punk and channeling them in a more melodic manner; I think the chorus is spot-on its restraint, fitting for the style. There’s some nice vibes going on in your EP, so if you’re into the mellower melodies of post-punk, visit below.

It’s weird that the musical year sort of just stops once everyone puts out their year-end lists, but since that’s the case, this week’s playlist is just a mere 13 jams to get you through the week. It might also be the last playlist of jams we put up in 2021; if everyone’s taking off then I am too, dammit! But, there’s a lot of jams to be had in this list, like the opening jam from Artsick. Plus, you get some new Austin love from Blushing and A. Sincliar, then a few hits from Japanese acts like Merry Christmas and Nicfit. Whatevers, indulge yourself.

Nicfit Share Deviation Video

Looks like we’re spending some time on the Japanese tip today, getting you into Nicfit and their latest single. The band operate with this sound that feels like you’ve taken the best bits of Fugazi and like-minded post-hardcore outfits, then mixed it up with modern twinges of psychedelia and pop music. At times the track can feel really heavy, particularly as it smashes to a close, though it can also feel fun and off-kilter immediately following. The track keeps you guessing, which makes for the best listening longevity. They’ll be releasing their Fuse LP in January via Upset the Rhythm.

Merry Christmas Share the Flying Trombone Sisters

If you haven’t heard of Tokyo’s Merry Christmas, might I suggest visiting their recent album The Night the Night Fell. They follow up that release with a new version of an old track, “The Flying Trombone Sisters.” I’ll be honest, this tune brings back all the old memories, listening to bands like Beulah and Architecture and Helsinki where they incorporate horns and frantic energy into the Elephant 6 sound popularized by Neutral Milk Hotel; it kind of sounds like a bastarized version of Arcade Fire, which only makes them all the cooler in my book. Give it some spins my friends.

That New Shout Out Louds Tune

Well, we took our eyes off the prize, and RayRay and I both completely missed this new Shout Out Louds tune, despite that being one of our favorite bands. The group are preparing their sixth album, House, which is out next February, continuing to show an adherence to these rhythm sections that naturally propel the song and its energy. Adam’s voice has this familiarity too, perhaps because I’ve been listening to the group since the early 00s, but it’s one of those distinctive voices you immediately recognize. I love the way the band build in various vocal textures here to back his voice, as its clear the new LP will be all about creating expansive pop layers. Sorry I missed this, but catch it here, now!

New Single from A. Sinclair

We’ve been covering Aaron Sinclair’s music since he fronted Frank Smith back in the day, but he’s been knocking around Austin as A. Sinclair for some time, as well as moonlighting as a drummer in various rad acts about town. This last week he released this wonderful new single, and I’ve really just been relishing his vocal performance here; a nice little polished feel, though still every bit as emotive as he’s always been. I’m also fond of the way that guitar line sort of bends around the track too. Feel like this is a great way to kick off a Thursday, so enjoy the latest from Austin.

Tempers Announce New Meaning

I was hyper-focused on getting our Year End Albums list up, so I missed the announcement that there is a new Tempers LP coming out early next year. The press release for this tune listed their new record as something to be defined at “quietly intense,” and I think that’s perfectly fitting having spent a few days with this single. It’s got that classic synth pop sound, though the beats aren’t overindulgent, allowing this light propulsion to kick the song forward; it almost creates its own tension the way it never quite seems to reach full speed. When you mix that with these heavenly vocal notes, you understand that things in this world really do operate on multiple levels. Enjoy this tune, and keep an eye out on New Meaning next April via Dais.

Blushing Drop Sour Punch Video

Remember when we released Blushing‘s Weak EP? Yeah…seems like years ago…I think it was. But, the band have just been crushing it through their hard work and dedication to bringing out the best in the dreamy brand of shoegaze. This new single from their forthcoming Possessions continues to show the band letting melody and noise co-habitate inside their songs; you can’t listen to a moment without the wall of distortion washing over you, battling with Christina’s vocals for the listener’s attention. Honestly, every new song this lot writes seems to just raise the bar a bit higher than it was before. Possessions is out next February via Kanine Records, followed by a West Coast tour with other local greats Letting Up Despite Great Faults.

 

WIAIWYA Releases Holiday Compilation

Our friends over in the UK will likely already be all over this one, but just wanted to make sure everyone was in the know on our end, as WIAIWYA just dropped an incredible holiday compilation titled 24. It’s 24 songs from some of the finest purveyors of pop music around; Pete Astor, Love Burns, the Orchids, the BVs, and a bunch bunch more of artists we’ve been covering on this site for some time. I have a feeling there’s a little something for everyone in this mix, so feel free to sample a tune or two below, then if you feel so inclined spread the holiday cheer by telling a friend!
