Sub*T Share New Single, Asterisk

Fire Talk Records has been doing some great stuff with their Open Tab project, giving us new tunes and cool interviews with lesser known bands. Today they’re sharing a brand new track from Sub*T, a New York duo bringing up this fuzzy indie rock that’s high on hooks. There’s something about their work that just feels anthemic and intimate simultaneously, like you could singalong while jumping on your bed, or bang your head in the live setting. If you’re in the need for driving pop rock that’s filled with harmonies and catchy lines, then you need go no further than this outfit…and don’t forget to check out some of their other hits…it’s about discovery afterall!

No Frills Share Save the Bees Tune

Feel like we needed just a little more bounce to the day, thus far, so we’ve got this brand new track from Toronto’s No Frills. The band have just dropped their Downward Dog LP, and this track has this rad little guitar uptick that just makes the shoulders shimmy and the toes tap. I was already hooked on the playfulness of the tune when it hits the 1:20 mark; here, the song sets up for a nice emphatic burst of sunshine pouring through your speakers, giving you one of those clich warm fuzzy moments. If you’re digging this, be sure to check out the whole LP, offering up equally rewarding moments.

Lunar Isles Shares Bloom + Drops Visitor EP

It’s easy to get caught up in the American indie scene, for obvious reasons. But, when it comes to dreamy indie pop, you’ve got to step outside that to discover the best Monday gems, like South Korea’s Lunar Isles. The group just dropped their Visitor EP, and this last single is definitely worthy of a few minutes of your time. I love the steadying of the musical elements; they seem satiated, not looking for more, just happy with their existence. That patience and self-awareness allows the vocals to really charm, matching the mood with this affected dreaminess that just caresses your ear caverns. There’s some slight lifts in the guitar work, making sure the song isn’t merely satisfied with being, and that adds just enough to make the song rewarding on repeat listens.

Weirdly, I felt like I didn’t cover too much last week, but apparently we got in at least 15 new songs, plus a few extras. I’m getting pickier in my old age, but mostly just figure you read Stereogum first, so no need to cover what they’re covering in their Premature Ejaculation column. I started out this week’s playlist with a cover from Screaming Females, but bookend it with the OG from The Selecter, cuz why the fuck not. Our friends Humdrum had a new hit, and that glorious Papercuts LP finally dropped in. It’s Monday, and there’s jams…I’m just over here listening to the first wave British ska.

Since Fridays are meant for fun, why don’t we take two bands I really love, Screaming Females and the Selecter, and see how the two fit together? Wait! Screaming Females have just covered the Selecter’s “On My Radio?” Well, let’s share that jam! I love how the band manage to keep their own sound, particularly in the guitar work, while still incorporating the natural joy of old school ska. Personally, I’d love to see Marissa out there doing a little skank just like Pauline Black did when I last saw the Selecter at Liberty Lunch. Say what you want, old school ska and new school ska were fun, and while there was nu-metal and aggro-punk swirling about in the mid 90s, it was a great place to find yourself dancing with your friends…I’m off to go skank about my classroom.

The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness Drop New Single

Are the Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness one of the better kept secrets in the indie pop realm? Well, let’s hope not, as you’d be missing out on some great tunes if you skip over the band; start by going back to last years Songs from Another Life. But, alas, its Bandcamp Friday, so the band have dropped this wonderful new single to get inside your ear. I think the group open up the tune with this really soft crystalline guitars, strumming over each other. But, drums kick in slightly, and there’s this brief uplifting moment that immediately takes the track to another level. It’s just a tease, as the chorus really shows where the band’s melodic play shines right to your heart. Don’t sleep on this one.

Papercuts Release Past Life Regression + Share Video for Sinister Smile

I’ve made no secret of my Jason Quever adoration these last few months, knowing that it would all peak with the release of Past Life Regression. So, congratulations to Papercuts, and to you, as you can now spend your day immersed in one of the better LPs to drop this year. Plus, we get the added bonus of a new visual adventure to go along with “Sinister Smile,” which might be one of the record’s poppier tracks, at least in a certain sense. There’s something timeless about this whole record, drawing from all corners of the rock canon to craft a brilliant collection of escapism. Do what’s right, and rush off to buy Past Life Regression today, out courtesy of Slumberland Records. Stream the album HERE.

Tony Jay Shares Hey There Flower News

Tony Jay is the solo project of Michael Ramos, who we’ve chatted with about Flowertown (he also plays in April Magazine/Al Harper), and we should celebrate today with the announcement of a vinyl LP version of Hey There Flower. The video version of this has been floating about for a bit, but why not share it all together, as it seems to also encompass a little bit of Ramos’ sense of humor. I love the balance in his songwriting; it alternates between this intimate dreaminess and this darker personality, all the while selling this incredible guitar sound that seems omnipotent, despite the pull of lo-fidelity. It’s been a slow news week for my tastes, so having a reason to post this video again seems perfect. The vinyl version will be out in May via Mt. St. Mtn.; you can also listen to it all over at Paisley Shirt who put out a version of it on tape last year.

Loveboner Share POV: Your Stepdad’s at the Gay Bar (and He’s Doing Great)

Feel like kicking off Friday by throwing a little fun pop punk right in your face, courtesy of Australia’s Loveboner. The duo are prepping the release of their new record, Loveboner are Reinventing Oral Sex, which drops in June via Psychic Hysteria. It’s the sort of tongue-in-cheek fun you’d expect on an old punk CD on early Fat Wreck Chords, though they’re spinning it out with a little sincerity; the album deals with themes of trans identity, queer romance, homoerotic action movies, and of course, step-dads. You’re getting amped for the weekend, and Fridays are fun, so turn it up and sing along!
