Hellrazor Share Jello Stars Single

Strangely, when this new track from Hellrazor drops in, I thought to myself, “I wish this is what that new Hum record sounded like.” But, with that spacey noise up front, the noise recedes, opening up this tune to a bit more of a melodic draw, pulling back the covers on the band’s pop tendencies. Still, you can hear the thump of the drums, tempered since their opening pummel; they take the chorus and help launch the song into this wall swell of ferocious noise, albeit one with a softened underbelly. Plus, those in need of the heavy fix get a mid-track breakdown with furious drum work that doesn’t quit until your ears are bloodied and the song crawls to a close.

Panjoma Share Bleeding Sun Video

Austin’s electronic scene is always bubbling below the surface of the Spoons and Sweet Spirits, so its nice to see an act like Panjoma come back into play after a long hiatus. They recently released their Sun & Moon EP, and with that, we’re revisiting it with this brand new video from the closing track, “Bleeding Sun.” While various track on the EP feature vocals from Mary, this tune in particular is all instrumental, perhaps an audio representation of the EPs journey, animated with these vivid colors that mix and meld, as the beats and glitches do in the song itself. It’s a welcome return, so feel free to sit back and absorb the sounds.

Silver Liz Share Unlikely Girl

As we move into the summer season, I start to indulge a bit more in my musical sweet tooth, which is great since there’s this new Silver Liz tune giving me my fix. “Oooh hooo” opens up the track, and instantly you’re sucked into that dreamy voice, intoxicated as it bends the notes around this very light jangle. Still, whilst loving it, I didn’t become addicted to this track completely until the moment where the band pull back the music and let Carrie Wagner’s voice continue to shine on its own, almost in that Hope Sandoval fashion…and each time the band employ that little trick I get a little weak in the knees.

Vintage Crop Share The Bloody War

In a little over a month, we’re going to have a new Vintage Crop LP to enjoy, and for my meaningless two cents, it’s shaping up quite nicely. There’s a new track out from the LP, and despite it’s punky garage tendencies, the band are slowing things down to mix up the vibe; imagine Amyl and the Sniffers coming down off that sugar high…this song is the crash in musical form. Building in gang vocals on the song’s back half adds some texture to the tune, giving it this bubbly effervescence. Kibitzer is out on June 24th via Upset the Rhythm and Anti Fade.

Public Opinion Drop New Single

If you’re out there today looking for some solid, super well produced, rock n roll music with a twist of punk, may I suggest this new single from Denver based Public Opinion. The track entitled, “Sweets all the Time”, has this very White Reaper meets NOFX vibe to it with a clear post-punk inspiration. Sort of garage rock but with a bit more gusto and edge if you will. Take it with you on your morning adventures.

This track will appear on the new EP Modern Convenience due out May 27th on Convulse Records. Pre-orders are live now.

Automatic Share Skyscraper Single

I’ve definitely been enjoying the jams from Automatic‘s forthcoming album, Excess, but I’m certainly a bit wary too. I mean, how does a band come out swinging with this mellowed post-punk and slick production; it feels like its a direct response to the 70s punk bravado…spun through this more futuristic lens. This new track crawls under your skin like some microscopic organism, embedding itself in your being as it seductively drops the chorus on repeat. The band are three for three with their singles, so I’ve got nothing but excitement for the forthcoming LP; it drops officially on June 24th via Stones Throw.

Cola Drop Fulton Park Video

I’ve really enjoyed spending some time with the new Cola album, which will be out at the end of this Week. Today, the band dropped the video for “Fulton Park,” which is one of the tunes I kept going back to as I listened to the LP. There’s this clever little plodding bounce to it; it’s kind of like a happy circle pit, but it’s broken up by this sort of sputtering noise with Tim Darcy’s voice draped over the downward spiral. Something about this tune just felt more imaginative, more thoughtful in its purposeful unfolding than I think we got before, illustrating that Cola definitely have some tricks up their sleeve. Look for Deep in View on Friday via Fire Talk.

Show Review: Turnstile @ Stubb’s (5/6)

We have some bonus coverage for you today. Friend and photographer, Nick Radcliffe, ventured out to catch Turnstile when they came through Austin to play at Stubb’s BBQ.

A quick excerpt: “For those of you that don’t know, Turnstile shows do not gradually escalate. You’re immediately thrown into a whirlwind of flesh, sweat, beer, and TLC (Turnstile Love Connection for the uninitiated). That said, the hardcore scene is known for its sense of community. Everyone is there for a good time and look out for one another. No matter the intensity someone’s got your back, or side, or whichever side happens to be thrown into the pit. I’ll give Turnstile some credit for this set though, they did try to ease us in.”

Hearts and Rockets Share Buy It Video

Looking through our emails this weekend, I was stoked to see that our friends over at Psychic Hysteria had sent us a new video from Hearts and Rockets for their single “Buy It.” The tune itself is a driving bit of garage pop; there’s a definite bit of attitude, but the rhythm of the song allows you tap your toes and enjoy your own personal listening party. Guitar lines cutting through and offering a bit of sonic dissonance illustrate just how perfectly the Melbourne duo walk the line between edgy art and pop tendencies. If you’re doubting me, check out the TV is Boring EP, which features this jam below!

Last Week’s Jams, Today (5.9 – 5.13)

You’ve waited all weekend for the quick and easy recap of all the sweet tunes we hit up last week. We started off the week really strong with a bunch of stuff, but somehow, it feels like we kind of sputtered to a close, just sprinkling a tune here and there. Still, we managed to get 20 great tunes you should enjoy in your first hour of the morning. We start it off with the absolute banger from Say Sue Me, then have some more experimental works from the likes of Sinaive and Double Vanity. Plus, we’ve got a new track from our friend Lizzy Lehman produced by S. Houser and Jim Eno of Spoon. Turn it up and get your day started.
