Say Sue Me Share No Real Place Single

South Korea’s Say Sue Me has written a lot of great tracks over the years, but for my ears, this might be one of the tops, if not THE top. I love the energetic roll in that begins immediately, with Sumi’s voice hitting you right away, speedily delivering the relatable lyrical content about missing someone. There’s this natural hook that’s superseding everything else around the song, but that doesn’t mean that the thumping drums or the dancing guitar work go unnoticed; it’s just hard to focus as you’re so seduced by the incessant joy jumping through your speakers. The band release The Last Thing Left this Friday via Damnably!

Sinaive Prep Super 45 t.

French group Sinaive are crafting this perfectly fuzzy brand of pop that has me on the edge of my seat as I wait for their new Super 45 t. EP. Opening up with this wall of scuzzy fuzzy guitars immediately captures my attention. From there it turns right into something cozy and warm, with the melodies mingling together to create this wonder-world of daydreaming. Few band really capture the perfect balance between noise and pop elements as perfectly as this French quartet do. Plus, they’re releasing their EP with one of my favorite labels, Hidden Bay Records (also Arvo Disques/Hellzapoppin Records); the whole EP drops at the end of May, but you can get seduced right below!

Teenage Tom Petties Share Boxroom Bangers

Tom Brown’s new project (he also plays in RF!) is dropping their self-titled debut at the beginning of June, and we’re here to suggest you give the band a solid listen. This track operates around a meandering sort of heavy guitar jangle; it feels like the guitars chasing you this way and that through dirty back alleys in some no-name British town. But, it also feels very much like Ohio, more specifically Dayton, as it’s hard to really distance Brown’s vocal approach from Bob Pollard. Still, Teenage Tom Petties success is the ability to really bleed the edges between guitar pop and those grittier moments of punkier alternative that erupted in the 90s. Look for their debut LP on June 3rd via Safe Suburban Home Records.

Daniel Villareal Drops Patria Video

I’m really excited for Daniel Villareal‘s Panama 77’ LP, and the reworking of Avelino Munoz‘ classic, “Patria,” is just the kind of gift I’m looking for on this record. This incredible video was created by Daniel’s friend Eddie Bragin, which sort of circles back through one of the album’s great musical themes…family, and the tradition of music shared amongst friends. It’s honestly one of those things that I think we all can relate to, particularly when it comes to those who love to dive deep into genres with their pals. This tune’s a nice little bit of organ work, and when accompanied with the video, it’s this sort of contemplative piece that allows you just take a nice warm bath in the musical sounds Villareal has created. Panama 77′ is out May 20th via International Anthem.

Stella Donnelly Shares Lungs + Announces New Record

In my opinion, Stella Donnelly is an absolute powerhouse, and I’m hoping with the announcement of Flood that she really starts to get the deserved attention here in the States. On her last record, it felt like sort of a more traditional singer-songwriter affair, though the songs were buoyed with great arrangements, not to mention Stella’s playfulness. But, earlier this year, Stella featured on Methyl Ethel‘s “Proof” single, which was an absolute banger. Perhaps we should have taken note, as this new single seems a little more intent on a similar production, using driving beats and natural hooks to set up the core of the song. Her wordplay is still clever as ever, so it doesn’t sound like you’re losing anything; you just get to see a great songwriter blossoming further into the every day name we fully expected her to be. Her new LP, Flood, will be out in August via Secretly Canadian.

I Was a King Share Here at Last

One of the bands I’ve always quietly cherished and pushed on these pages is Norway’s I Was a King; they just dropped a brand new track with mention of a new record on the horizon. This song still has a familiar guitar sound, which comes as no surprise, though I’ll admit it’s a little bit more tilted towards the psychedelic/paisley tendencies (not that I mind one bit!). Time and time again, the warmth of the vocals just feel like they’re hugging me closely, holding me to let me know everything in the world’s going to be alright; the band feels like they’ve encountered the restlessness of the world and chosen to instead choose tranquility…and most excellent pop melodies. Their new LP Follow Me Home is expected in the Fall.

Mountain Time Release Meet The Kid

I’m sure most of you are familiar with the ATX legend Chris Simpson and his large catalogue of music with Mineral, The Gloria Record, Zookeeper, and tons of other local groups. Over the last few years, Simpson has turned his focus to a more singer/songwriter folk style of music with his project Mountain Time. If you didn’t pick up his “best of” or song collection of solo music from last year, Saint Francis, Zookeeper, well you should really grab a copy. This year Chris is working on a new album for a planned release next year, but in the meantime he’s shared this new single “Meet the Kid”. As has come to be expected, Simpson displays his keen ability to construct a near perfect folk inspired, American pop tune. Dig it.

Lizzy Lehman Shares Project Traction Single

I’ve long admired Lizzy Lehman for their songwriting, and we were first introduced to their gifts back in the day with her band Carry Illinois. But, we’re here to talk about a new track as part of Project Traction. The project is an incredible opportunity for women and non-binary musicians to get mentorship in the recording process, which aims to help balance the playing field in current recording industry. This go round, Lizzy Lehman is recorded by the great Sara Houser, with a little help from Jim Eno (who plays in some band named Spoon?). This track is a little different, in terms of what we’ve come to expect from Lizzy; it’s this huge booming voice presented in a very up-front pop fashion. You can’t help but be moved by the that voice, and the storytelling of moving on from toxic relationships. Check out more of Project Traction HERE.

Slack Times Share Look Away + Announce LP

If you actually read this site, then I reckon you’ve liked seen Slack Times pop up on our radar previously, particularly as we made a nod to their At the Blue Melon Rendezvous and its Athens influences. Well, today we’re here with the news of their new compilation record, which will include 6 new songs, atop the 8 tracks from their previous EPs. If you don’t find these crystalline guitar jangles hitting the right notes, wait until the handclaps and hip-shaking swagger swing into the chorus to really sell you on the masterful hooks the band use to fill their tunes. Carried Away already has 9 great tunes, so we’re looking forward to the rest if they sound this damned good. The LP is out June 24th via Meritorio Records.

Last Week’s Jams, Today (5.2 – 5.6)

So much good music last week, and so much to cover. Well, we tried to get up as much as we could, plus Brian got some great photos of Good Morning and Packs. Here’s our weekly musical recap, with lots of awesome news, like new releases from Tan Cologne, Field Guides…and Voxtrot! I think the news of their Early Music compilation definitely made my week, even as I was held hostage in my classroom by state testing. Enjoy some jams from last week.
