Last Week’s Jams, Today (6.13 – 6.17)

Well, we wrote up at least 25 fresh tracks last week, many of which we purposefully tried to make sure weren’t on all the other cool kid sites. That also might be why we missed a few that you’d expect us to cover. It was great to hear Cool Sounds taking some new risks for their new LP, plus we made sure we had that new Mary Onettes tune right up there. And, our old friends Big Bill dropped a new record, so we wanted to remind you of their gifts…and then, there were loads of other songs, meant to get you through those early Monday morning blues without having to think too much about what you’re listening to all day…just know it’ll be good.

Chill Vibes From Otra Vez

Nathan and I were both huge fans of the debut self-titled LP from Mexico City based Petite Amie which came out around this time last year. It hit heavy rotation on our playlists and even featured in some of our year end lists from 2021. Since then, we haven’t heard much from the band so I was of course excited to receive this new single “Otra Vez” yesterday afternoon. It features a band on much more of an experimental, almost chillwave journey of melodies, bass lines, and an overall groovy feel. I am very much enjoying it this morning.

Petite Amie will also be touring the States this fall. Full dates can be found here.

The Mary Onettes Share What I Feel In Some Places

I’ve always been a huge Mary Onettes fan, their self-titled album is the one LP that I can’t get enough…nor get my hands on, sadly. Today, the band return for the first time since 2018 with the announcement of What I Feel In Some Places EP, and share the title track. Opening up, the song builds this dense atmosphere, foggy in the corners, melodic hints lurking in the shadows of the sound. When the vocals come into play, they create this beautiful moment of heartfelt pop where you can feel the emotionally charged moments rise out of the heavy groove behind. The band will release their new EP on July 1st, so its just around the corner!

Skinny Dippers Share Home Single

You’re in need of a shining bit of guitar pop to win you over? Something along the lines of Real Estate or the like? Well, then I advise you to listen to this new single from Brooklyn’s Skinny Dippers. This single feels like you’ve left town, windows down and the warmth of the day shining upon your face. I love when the voice of lead songwriter Ryan Gross combines with a female counterpart; in a strange way, it brings the indie innocence of the early 2000s, though perhaps I’m just easily charmed by harmonizing. Enjoy the sunshine vibes of this tune!

My Raining Stars Share Behind Her Lovely Smile

Thierry Haliniak is no stranger to the sounds of pop music, having been on the edges of the indie pop realm since the early 90s, but it’s really been the last decade or so when his solo work as My Raining Stars really seems to have sprung to life. There’s that nostalgic carousel of jangling guitar licks chiming through your speaker. All that, dreaminess, yet its still the warmth of Thierry’s voice beckoning you to dive further into what’s lurking in this new LP. Searching for crisp pop music to transport you back to the 90s? Well, then you’re going to want to grab 89 Memories, the new LP, which is dropping today via Shelflife/Discos de Kirlian.

Melodic New Tune From Worthitpurchase

California based outfit Worthitpurchase dropped this new tune called “Anne Hedonic” this morning and it seemed like a nice, mellow way to ease you into the afternoon. The track has a clear dream pop inspiration with its soft melody and bright vocals, but the combination of the driving bass throughout is what truly makes it a memorable tune. It gives it this catchy, thumping and bouncy feel. I hope you enjoy.

This track will be on a new release entitled Truthtelling due out August 5th on Anxiety Blanket.

Lithics Release Nature Observation Poem

If you’re one of those that missed the brilliant Tower of Age in 2020, then be sure to rectify that by heading to Trouble in Mind and grabbing it. But today, and thanks to Andy at RSTB for pointing this one out, I’m rocking a new Lithics single. If you’re looking for a marching percussive element to drive some wonky art-punk, then, well, you just need to jump on this train as it’s all about a rolling snare mixed in with some light hi-hat. Aubrey Hornor’s deadpan vocals march to the same beat, all before the guitars start to jitter in your speaker, shaking the room with angular spikes. From there, the song snakes its way in and out of your brain, weaving sharp cuts across the backbone of the marching drum beat. I love this band, and you should too!

Wombo Drop Snakey Single

Wombo were one of the highlights, for me, of SXSW; I love the band’s sound, somewhere in the realm of post-punk, and I can assume folks will likely make Dry Cleaning nods too (that might be a theme today!). This song operates atop heavy bass lines and short percussive notes; it’s not until the 48 second mark that the song begins to stretch it out a bit. When they do, angular riffs began to cut into that rhythmic backbone, sharpening the sound, with little distortion guitar blips sounding like warning alarms. Their album Fairy Rust will be out via Fire Talk on July 29th, and they hit the road throughout late July/early August…including an Austin date at the Mohawk.

Scarves Drop Dead Batteries Single

I failed you all yesterday by not posting this Scarves single immediately, but I figured I’d make up for it by offering it this morning! It’s hard not to find remnants of the good days of Death Cab in the verses here, with Niko’s voice approximating that Gibbard-esque whisper; there’s a sharp accent from Nessa Grasing, however, which sets the tone for the song’s more explorative side. Listening to the drum work, it allows the tune to kind of explode into other spaces, moving into more of a kind of rhythmic pulse, allowing the lyrics to really hit home. Despite “knocking on a door of a future that won’t let us in,” the song reminds us to take it into our own hands as we’re reminded that our favorite artists, like Scarves, “are just trying to make something real.” Their new album, Delicate Creatures is out on August 26th via Good Eye Records.

The Secret Beach Shares Miss You

Micah Erenberg, aka The Secret Beach, is gearing up for the release of his new Songs from the Secret Beach LP, which will be out in August, though you can hang onto this new jam of a single. The guitar works its way through the song with this pseudo folk wiggle, circling back to jiggle in your speakers again and again. There’s a slight structural twist that’s been really charming, when Erenberg hits the chorus of “I miss you,” giving the guitar a chance to be more expansive as the arrangements swell around the voice. Definitely a jam I keep revisiting as the day goes on.
