The Sheeps Share Seabird II

Sometimes I throw on a song, and I just get lost; I keep circling back to it, stuck on the melody or a brief moment in time that won’t leave my brain…and that’s what happened to the latest from the Sheeps. Musically, the band kind of toy with this lo-fi sensibility, though you can hear touches of the psych from the late 00s. I just keep coming back to the rise and fall of the vocals. When they come in, they’re very much sunny, something you’d expect to hear from Brian Wilson aficionados, but then they drop into this heavier tone, kind of spooky and weird, encouraging the seabird to fly to its home. Just jam out, and you’ll be glad you did!

Skinny Dippers Share Past Selves

Ryan Gross and his project, Skinny Dippers, already hit these pages this summer with an earlier single, and as we stare down another week of 100 degree days, we may as well embrace the brightness in our musical world too. Gross always has these little crisp guitar notes, leaning a bit towards old-west Americana, but its when you combine that with the wistfulness of his voice that you really start to daydream; you find yourself swept away by the notes, willingly letting the song bowl you over like a tumbleweed in the wind. And there you have it, let the warmth of this song wash you down the stream of life.

Last Week’s Jams, Today (7.18 – 7.22)

We got back to being super busy last week, with RayRay premiering that new No Win jam, plus a bunch of other new stuff that we were stoked to dive into. Good to see Free Time and Laura Jean back with new stuff, not to mention a little local love from the likes of First Names and Twain (he lives here!). All in all, its a bunch of stuff, all over the place musically, just like we do, so hopefully this kicks your Monday into gear!

Per Och Olof Announces Radd Hast

I’ll be honest, as I have absolutely no clue what’s being said in this new single from Per Och Olof, but even with that, the emotive quality of the tune captured me nonetheless. News of his new compilation, Radd Hast, claim that he showed up to the studio with a bunch of punky demos only to turn them into pop diamonds on the way out. You can hear that attitude in the sharpness of the guitar work, though his voice definitely lends itself more towards a pop inclination. If you’re willing to lose yourself in a vibe, then spend some time here, and be sure to check out some more of Radd Hast tracks; the physical version is out in September via Rama Lama Records.

Triangle Rain Club Shares In My Head

Chicago’s Triangle Rain Club caught our attention earlier this year with the Close the Door EP, but it looks like a much anticipated debut LP is on its way. The song employs heavy riffs of the sort that would reverberate through your body if the amp was turned up to eleven, yet somehow the project manages to hang back just enough to allow the melody to seep through the speakers. Every time I turn this on, its like the Jesus and the Mary Chain meet up with one of the pop grunge groups of the 90s, like Soul Asylum; it’s catchy, but you can feel the weight of the song as it burrows into your brain. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more about the debut LP!

Dan Mangan Shares Fire Escape Video/Single

A quick search for the name Dan Mangan on our site will return a massive amount of posts from the Vancouver based songwriter over the years. Simply put, I am a huge fan. As a follower of Mangan’s work, I am excited to be sharing his latest single “Fire Escape” which features an incredibly well shot video featuring Steven Ogg (you may recognize him from The Walking Dead). If for some reason you have yet to check out the music of Dan Mangan, this should be a perfect entry point.

Mangan is also heading out on tour this fall. Check out dates here.

Slick New Tune From Jake Tittle

Jake Tittle is a Los Angeles based singer/songwriter who has been making and recording music in the SoCal area for near on seven years at this point. Though you may not yet be familiar with Mr. Tittle, I am sure you will start giving him your attention after having a listen to his new song “Fair Warning”. I love his craft here as a songwriter who doesn’t simply strum a guitar and sing, but also offers some really slick backing beats to turn the song into much more of a summer jam. Give it a listen.

Jake Tittle has plans for a new full length album coming out hopefully later this summer.

Jim Nothing Shares Yellow House Video

Those of you following the New Zealand scene, or anything Oceanic in nature, should keep your eyes on Jim Nothing, as this fresh single from their debut record is pretty near perfect. The riff work in the song has that sort of purposefully sloppy vibe, sort of chugging along haphazardly while the ship rocks around on the back of the rhythm section. Elements of this sound like they’re rooted in 90s pop rock, though you can hear other little DIY bits of flare in the way the vocals work together to build the melodic core. Just before you announce your devotion, the song calls halts, and you’re forced to rush over to the Meritorio Records/Melted Ice Cream sites and grab a copy of the group’s In the Marigolds LP…out September 15th.

Mamalarky Announce Pocket Fantasy

This snuck out yesterday, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t get behind this album announcement from Mamalarky. The band are constantly working, and it seems like that has led to a track that kind of unloads all the pressure of writing and recording by blasting out a joyous burst. Livvy’s riff work has this angular choppiness that feels like jumping about in your room, while the chorus just radiates an exhilarated bunch. You can see they’ve locked into that joy in the video as well, as the group are at their playful best throughout! If you’re digging it, Pocket Fantasy is out September 30th via Fire Talk.

Shutups Share Endless Heaven

Before we dismiss you for the day, I would be remiss to not send you on your way with this new song called “Endless Heaven” from Oakland based group Shutups. I’m a huge fan of the way the song lulls you into this mellow, sort of indie rock groove and then explodes into this banging, heavy guitar rock number about 1.5 minutes in. When looking for a song to progress slowly, rise heavily, and then fall again into a fade out, this is the song for you. Absolutely stellar production on this one as well.

Shutups will release this track on new album Can’t Eat Nearly as Much as I want to Vomit which is due out on October 21st via Kill Rock Stars (pre-order now).
