The Fours Share New Single

The Fours popped up on my radar earlier this year as they prepared the release of Misadventure. But, having just dropped that LP a few months ago, they’re already back with a brilliant bit of rock n’ roll for you to consume. This tune seems like it’s a study on early Jonathan Richman; it’s a no-frills rock approach, just driving heavy rhythms through your speakers, with a sort of updated feel to it. Something in the vocals still holds onto that pop sentiment, never straying too far from the song’s center. If you like your jams steady, catchy and cool, then you’re going to want to keep an eye out for the group’s new LP Shaking and Moving, coming soon via World of Birds Records.

Last Week’s Jams (12.5 – 12.9)

If your one of the seven people that hit up our site regularly (thanks mom!), then you might notice a title change. Nothing big, but just dropped a word because I was tired of pretending to be too clever. I’m not. Alas, we are still out here covering as much music as we have time for, and still trying to figure out how to incorporate the TMZ style drama that makes the cool sites so popular. So, for me, last week had some highlights I was pretty stoked upon; I got to hear solid returns from Lust for Youth and Jackie Mendoza, not to mention another brilliant electropop goodie from Das Kope. We got the announcement of new Julian Never, Galore and Blue Lawyer LPs, which should make everyone in the Bay Area proud. Plus there’s a great show preview/review from J.Wags on Golden Dawn Arkestra, so be sure to check out his work!

Show Review: Golden Dawn Arkestra @ The Paramount Theatre (12.10.22)

Saturday night in Austin welcomed the arrival of Saturnus the Great in collaboration with the reemergence on Earth of the interstellar musical collective, the Golden Dawn Arkestra, into the City of the Violet Crown. Hailing from the planet Cygnus, many light years from our home galaxy, the band fronted by leader Zapot Mgwai (Topaz McGarrigle) and backed by a 14-piece band and dance troupe, delivered a glorious performance that inspired the audience to love and dance freely. Anytime we humans are lucky enough to witness the glory and abundance of the Arkestra in motion it is certain to be a celebration of the human spirit and transportation and transformation through music. Last nights show was truly no exception. Read more

Das Kope Shares Pacific Coast Highway

You’re stuck in your room and dreaming of a long drive down the ocean front, so why not write a track about that stretch of road. In the case of Das Kope, that’s just what was done in regards to new single Pacific Coast Highway. The single continues with the mixture of deep electronica and sunny beach vibes, both likely influencing Das Kope from either his home in Brazil or Los Angeles; the song even takes on a little bit of a catchy tropicalia groove in its latter half before sliding back into the oozy dream state. Oh, and the accompanying video is a chilled out visual experience all to itself, continuing the artistry of the project.

Galore Share Video for New Living + Announce Blush EP

Generally speaking, Friday’s always seem to carry with them a bit of yearning, and perhaps you’ve found the soundtrack to your yearning below by way of this fresh new single from San Francisco’s Galore. They’ve just announced their Blush EP, with this striking single, with the promise that the five new songs come across with a bit more “arthouse, droney sound” being employed. You can hear that here, as there’s a crisp jangle, albeit one that seems a touch decaffeinated at first. Still, the quartet finds a way to punctuate their sound, punching up the volume a bit at the 1:22 to mark, allowing overlapping vocals and a heavier texture to sort of raise the bar on vibe. Even with that kick, the band still manage to take another twist, keeping that textured feel, but bringing back a sense of longing, only coming from the vocals in the song’s latter half. All of this is set to a wonderful camping adventure shot at Point Reyes National Seashore by the band’s own Ava Rosen. The Blush EP comes your way on Friday the 16th, courtesy of Paisley Shirt Records and Safe Suburban Home. Pre-Order HERE!

H. Hawkline Drops Suppression Street

It amazes me when people will fawn over certain artists and completely ignore other craftsmen of equal or greater talents, like H. Hawkline. We’ve got a new single from his forthcoming record, Milk for Flowers, illustrating both the blossoming craft in the musicianship, as well as the wordplay that indicates the personal nature of the album itself. I love the line “I paint my face for everyone I meet,” and you begin to wonder if we’ll ever truly get to know the inner workings of songwriter Huw Evans. His longtime collaborator Cate le Bon also has a hand in production on the record, and we’re all the better for it. Milk for Flowers is available March 10th via Heavenly Recordings.

The Slow Summits Share Budge

Too Good to Be True Records has some solid singles ready to go throughout next year, and our first peak is with the beloved Swedish outfit, the Slow Summits. They offer up a classic indiepop sound, albeit one with their own bits of nuance and flare. You’ve got deep vocal tones, similar to those releases by Cats on Fire that charmed your pants off. Sure, there’s some jangling here, but it’s calmed, not rushing, letting little bits of horns and backing vocals creep in from the background to add the perfect bit of texture to this tune. They always craft these tunes that fit any time of day or year, so right now seems the perfect time for this new single!

Blue Canopy Deliver Bright Spot

Considering it is unseasonably warm here in Texas, though quite nice, I’m still looking for some sunny day pop to squeeze into my daily playlist, like this new Blue Canopy. This project is helmed by Alex Schiff up in Portland, who was one of the songwriters for Modern Rivals. Guitars twist and churn at the get go, waiting for the percussive element to slide its way into the picture; it creates this natural bob of the head, bouncing with the snappy drum hits. Schiff’s vocals have this wistfulness to them, adding to the dreamy textures applied throughout the track, intermingling with the jangly bounce. Fun way to start out a Thursday, no?

Gotta Check Out Notbrian

New York City based artist Brian Desousa and his project known as notbrian came onto our radar towards the end of summer with the release of The No EP, and we’ve been eagerly awaiting new music ever since. Well today he has a new tune for us called “Death of a Salesman” and it’s really solidifying this young artist as one to watch this year and next. It’s rad the way he shows a sort of very slight hip-hop or R&B inspiration and melds it with some lo-fi, yet jangly indie pop sounds. Perfectly unique vibe we are always on the lookout for. Stay tuned for more!
