Evntyd Share Quotidian Single

With all the releases out in the world, it’s always tough to keep up with new tunes, even if its hiding out in your own backyard, like Evntyd. Honestly, the post-punk project just snuck onto my radar with this new single, so I’ve been diving in pretty heavily. This tune begins with two moods, there’s a darkness haunting the atmosphere, but the propulsive nature and angular guitar riffs give off this melodic texture that’s definitely in my wheelhouse. Then the tune takes on solid bit of dreaminess when the vocals mix in, kind of slowly filling your room as they billow out. Definitely an artists I’ll be keeping my eye on going forward.

Sid Steppes Shares Night Turns Into Day

Feel like nothing is needed more on a Monday morning than a good driving rocker, such as the tune below we’ve got from Sid Steppes. It begins in unassuming fashion, faint hints of fuzz hanging out on the edges of the tune. Once that pedal drops in, you get the full weight of those heavy riffs burrowing into your eardrums; it’s exactly the style that made everyone swoon over Ty Segall, so if that’s your fit, might I suggest turning this up loud and letting it rip. If you dig on it, Sid also just dropped In Recent Memory, a full collection of tunes for you to enjoy.

You’d think in a short coverage week, we’d have few tunes, but there was so much great stuff last week, that we couldn’t help but to try and cover as much as we loved. Personally, I fawned over new Lachlan Denton, Cor de Luxand Tiny Ruins, plus continued my support for Spice World as Album of the Year. I also hit up the Austin scene with new stuff from Bayonne, Dorio, Fantastic Purple Spotsand Rad Gnar. RayRay loved that new Pile tune to death and premiered a new Strawberry Fuzz jam you can find lurking in here too. If we missed something super cool, let us know, otherwise, here’s a way to pass an hour of your day, happily.

Stream There’s No I In Spice World from Spice World

I know there are tons of great releases spread out through 2023 already, but I’ve already got There’s No I In Spice World penciled into my Top Ten of the year, and it’s only the 3rd week of January. To be fair, I’d put it there on the back of my favorite tune “Mountain Pony 20” alone, which I’m pretty sure I’ve played nearly 1000 times already. The band manage to walk this line between weary pop and energetic jangling pop. “Useless Feeling” offers that more upbeat churn you’ve come to expect from the current crop of Aussie outfits; the chorus is sublime tossing the steady beat into this joyous dual-vocal euphoria. You’ll find more explorative tracks like “Snake Oil” or “What a Pity What a Shame,” but regardless, you’ve got to stick out ’til the end to play “Dying to Go” at least a handful of times with a smile on your face. Spice World‘s new album is out today via Tenth Court/Meritorio.

The Primitives Share Panic + Release New EP

You’ve got to get something with a little spring to it, right? That’s why this great single from classic UK outfit the Primitives is perfect. I was drawn to the rhythm section, almost riffing on a reggae/rock-steady grooves, giving the tune this galloping feel from the very start. Tracy Tracy’s vocal performance is spot on for pop fans; she has these classic notes that recall the best of the 60s/70s performances, which likely make her one of the great voices, period. Plus, you throw all that together with classic indie rock, and you’ve got another charming song from the long-running outfit. Plus, today they release their Don’t Know Where to Start EP courtesy of HHBTM.

Rad Gnar Premiere Are You a Friend

Our old friends in Rad Gnar are living in the same space as I am at the moment, raising young kids (with another on the way–congrats Ben!). So, as we all do, or so I think, they’re writing songs that reflect those changes, with this tune serving as a reflection of the birth of your first child and the cosmic energies that surround us all. Musically, you’re going to hear the band blend heavier pop rock a la Superchunk with little elements of pop-punk and emo thrown in to create this huge ripping sound; it’s filled with yearning in the vocals and giant guitar-monies, so feel free to fall in love. You can find this track on the group’s Dead Strings EP.

Cor de Lux Share Rumors Single

Keep your eyes on the goings-on in North Carolina, where you’ll find the solid work from folks like Cor de Lux. They’ve got a new album coming out on February 10th, and they continue to blend all sorts of elements that tend to leave you in this sort of mesmerized state. Ambient noise trickles in, setting the scene for what’s to come; then distorted riffs come in, accented by an angular note ringing out from behind, with the drums anxious to join in by playing on the cymbals with a slight thud. Soon the angular guitars take hold, creating this sort of droning post-rock world, which is where we meet the dual vocal personalities that play into the track. The male vocals are heavy, matching the musical mood, while the female vocal seems to operate as a counterpoint, all of which comes to a head for this beautifully moving moment at 2:45 where there’s a more angelic moment billowing through your speakers. More shifts come into play as the song draws to a close, but who am I to give all that away. If you’re willing to spend time with new music, this is the place to start; Media is out in just a few weeks!

Emelia Austin Shares From Another Sky

I wanted to share the new track from Emelia Austin‘s forthcoming solo record as it feels like how Friday’s start. It’s got a heavy opening, just like the weight of the world is keeping you in bed. But, you climb out, jump in the shower, just as the drum beat begins to slowly trickle in with Austin’s vocals. You’re dressed and out the door while the guitars begin to build in some fuzzy riffs, showing a little bit of promise on your day. Your day and the song both trudge on continuously, pushing forward towards the weekend, or just towards the end of your day. A little calm comes in the afternoon, or in the tune’s middling moments, though it slowly builds, seemingly pushing the noise towards the end of the track, when suddenly it stops and your back in bed again. The true journey of a Friday song. Look for Emelia’s new LP, From Another Sky, to drop February 3rd via Anxiety Blanket.

Bayonne Announces New Album

We haven’t heard from Austin artists Bayonne since 2019 and Drastic Measures, so it’s great to see the multi-instrumentalist and producer return to the fold. This tune incorporates driving rhythmic punches alongside sparkling little electronic notes; you put that next to the vocal recordings and you can practically feel the movement of the song itself beneath you. The song, much like the album itself, has a huge personal touch to it, as it was the last song Roger was able to show his father before his passing, using little soundbites from the family’s old VHS tapes. Temporary Time will be out this May!

Swim Camp Share Dougie (for Sharyl)

Pennsylvania’s Swim Camp are hitting all the right notes this morning. I was actually just listening to Coma Cinema the other night wandering where my weird popsters were, and then lo and behold, this jam comes on. I love that the verse is just a bit warped, working over a central strum and a looped hum from the distance. Then you hit the chorus, and instead of playing into pop tropes, you get this surprising burst of exhilarating noise; I love the ability to bounce between the intimate moments and the boisterous noise that makes this song a rocker. Look out for a new LP later this year.
