One More Stunner From Pile

Well this late winter going into early Spring release season looks like it’s going to nuts and filled with tons of bangers to start the year. While we tend to see a lot of the huge names getting all the talk, I think many of us music fans may have forgotten about the upcoming Pile album, All Fiction, due out next month on Exploding in Sound. Already we’ve heard album banger, and song of the year winner “Loops” as well as the slightly poppier (for Pile) song “Poisons”. Today we have yet another new track called “Nude with a Suitcase” which may just be the darkest of the dark wave from the band. It’s a real slow burning, almost gothic approach and should slide in nicely to the album’s tracklist.

Pre-orders for All Fiction are live now with a release date of February 17th.

Dorio Drops Fresh Single, Light Me Up High

Our good friend Chad Doriocourt, aka Dorio, has just dropped a fresh single from the forthcoming Strawberry Dream LP. Almost immediately, you can tell that the project is going to be taking on some new levels, driving in more bounce and hooks to Chad’s songwriting repertoire. You can hear the lineage with the band’s early work, as the backing vocals and melodies have always been central, as they very much are, but you’ve got to be willing to get a little funky sometimes, exactly as its being done here. It’s like taking your favorite guitar pop band and giving them a dancefloor remix, gathering you and your friends to have the time of your lives as the night comes to a close. We’ll keep you posted when we have more info on the new LP.

Connections Release I Confess Video

Thinking about the previous Connections records, this new one sounds refreshing in a sense; it’s got softer edges and more melody; it almost feels like the group is one upping fellow Ohioans GBV by bringing in sharper hooks and more pop. But, you can be the judge on that one. I said what I said. You can’t deny the draw of the vocals in the front of the mix here, with jangling guitars echoing in each ear of your headphones and a steady bop on the drums hanging backstage. But, as soon as you’re swooning here, the song wraps up in a rush. It’s the perfect pop tease, and I can’t wait for Cool Change to drop on March 25th, courtesy of Trouble in Mind Records.

Real Ones Share The Feeling

Norwegian outfit Real Ones dropped their latest LP, Love Your Mother, last week, and as I’m going back on my listening over the last few days, I was reminded about how much I enjoyed the record, particularly this single. There’s something communal in the band’s approach, reminiscent of the classic rock era; it also has a tendency to bring in these huge swinging harmonies that match that vibe too. It’s kind of like the group have been hanging out studying an equal combination of the Dead’s early work and the whole of Wilco’s catalog; it’s the perfect feel good listen, so grab onto “the Feeling.”

Lachlan Denton Annoucnes Furnishings

Bobo Integral turns 10 years old in 2023, so first, congrats to the label on a great run! But, with that anniversary, the label announces a new record from one of my favorite artists, Lachlan Denton (Ocean Party/Pop Filter/Partner Look). There’s a snappiness to this track, which is really charming, playing perfectly into Lach’s vocal delivery; I love how he stretches the syllables in “prove” and “lose” as the song’s two minute mark quickly approaches. In the subject matter, Denton is reminding us that there’s a whole world out there to lift us up, if we’re only willing to put down the phone and reach out to friends for those real connections. Another gem; I look forward to Furnishings when it drops on April 14th.

Cameron Sonnier Shares Sunshine

I never really moved on from sweepingly dramatic pop music, which is why the craft of Cameron Sonnier really hits home…that and he’s from Houston, which ain’t too far away. This track drops into the hook zone immediately with the beat working beneath the jangling strum; delivering the first lines of “champagne/cocaine/magazine/I can give you anything you need,” immediately ups the ante, opening the door for this broad melody. In the production you can hear these little washes of atmospheric synths, texturing the world that Cameron’s created. This is our first listen to the work he’s composed for his forthcoming debut, Tunnels, expected to hit later this year.

Jacob Lopez Shares New Single

I was slow moving this morning, so this track from Jacob Lopez trickled in and caught my attention with much the same pacing. It’s a nice little dreamy sampler, with the song’s turning guitar notes sort of hanging in the air and burning like some sort of lit fuse snaking across the ground. Except, the thing I love about Lopez here is he doesn’t offer the easy hook, instead choosing to lengthen that fuse and let the notes sort of burn out on their own, building this beautifully dreamy churn where his soft notes can cruise in and seduce the listener.

Tiny Ruins Charm with The Crab/Waterbaby

Ever looking to get swept up in the power of narrative and songwriting? Trust me, this is the only way to listen to New Zealand’s Tiny Ruins. I’ve always loved the fragility of Hollie Fullbrook’s voice, striking in its tones, especially when its placed in the perfect setting like these sharp guitar notes that spin all around it in this brand new single. As the tune moves forward, there’s a slight musical lift as strings add some buoyancy, almost lifting the tune to your ears so you can’t escape. But, don’t worry, this beautiful tune about finding your own ritual/ceremony will resonate with you throughout the day. Such a joy to hear his project back, so here’s to hoping we get to hear more!

Premiere: Strawberry Fuzz Share Dropout

After you rested up yesterday and celebrated a Cowboys victory, it’s time to get back in the swing of things today with some loud rock music from Venice Beach based Strawberry Fuzz. The new single, “Dropout”, features this very loud and sort of post-punk energy mixed with the slightest hints of garage rock greats. It’s sure to get your attention and entice you to a further listen of the band’s new album entitled Strongs Dr. which is out tomorrow via all platforms. Ya dig.

Straight Arrows Drop Fresh Single

Having not dropped an album since 2018’s On Top LP, Sydney’s Straight Arrows are coming at you hard and fast with this fresh jam. It’s the sort you want to turn up nice and loud and let it rip right through your speakers. It should make sense that the band’s got the backing of John Dwyer and Ty Segall (who’s taking the band on the road); they’ve got this frantic scuzz rock riding high on the thumping rhythm section…all of which culminates in the sweet eruption in the chorus. You can sense the song’s anxiety slicing right through this tune here, amping up everyone that catches the group in the live setting! Single out now via Rice is Nice!
