Stream A New LP From Bedroom Eyes

While you’re looking for more tunes to enjoy this weekend, might I suggest this new, 9 song, full length album from Boston based group Bedroom Eyes. Having honed their craft for over 10 years now, new album Turned Away, shows a band leaning heavily into the noise of shoegaze with driving bass lines and rapidly paced drum beats. This is well worth a weekend listen. If you’re into it, consider a purchase over on bandcamp for either streaming or physical consumption.

Spearmint Announce This Candle Is For You

As I look through the overwhelming amount of great tunes coming out this Friday, I’m really excited that there’s a fresh Spearmint album coming to us soon! Soft brushes across the snare set a jolly beat, something that’ll make you lightly tap your toes as the chilled melody blows through your bedroom. But, as someone who relishes beautiful musical moments, in whatever fashion, tie into the 1:48 mark; there’s the slightest tonal change, creating this striking yearning moment that completely floored me as the song strode into its back half. Just a really pleasant way to step into this weekend; you’ll be able to grab This Candle Is For You on October 20th courtesy of WIAIWYA.

The Brights Share New Single, Prep New LP

I have never been to Australia, but there’s something that seems linked to the American West in a lot of the songwriting, which definitely felt like the case with this new single from the Brights. Honestly, and I know there’s tons of debate about, but the light guitar strum that kicked the song into gear definitely feels like some Workingman’s Dead era rock songwriting. It’s sunny and sharp, but mellowed by the softened percussion and relaxed presentation. Plus, there are delightful vocal hooks in here, whether call-and-response or just regular old school backing vocals…it’s all charm. With this hit, the Sydney based group announced that they’ll be releasing a new LP, Oyster Rock, in December via Meritorio Records.

Straight Rocker From Minnows

Hey it’s Friday so why don’t we celebrate some rock n roll music before we head into the weekend. My straight up rocker today comes by way of the Columbus, OH based outfit Minnows and their brand new single “Make Us Soldiers.” It has a sort of post-punk energy melded with some classic rock touches and even slight hints of later stage emo. Hit it.

This track will be part of an upcoming debut LP entitled Foreign Moon due out sometime this fall.

Night Drive Share Cover Your Eyes Single

When this Night Drive song kicked in, I was intoxicated by the thumping pulse and the twinkling bits of synth that intermingled with the beat. Obviously, this song’s all about that stomping rhythm; you can feel yourself moved towards the club floor and pounding your feet into the cold floors as lights flash all around you. With the vocals, you get the band’s commentary on the difficulties we all face in living through the end of times, building in some ominous undertones to the pulsing groove of what lays beneath. Even with that, your body might be begging to just let go if you’ve got the volume cranked up high enough. Position II will be drop on August 4th.

June Jones Signs With Chapter Music

When I look at labels that I love, one of the one’s I modeled ATH Records after (in my mind at least) was Chapter Music. The label, partially through our site, was perhaps known for great Aussie guitar pop with acts like Crayon Fields or Goon Sax. But, if you dug in deeper you’d see the label’s affinity for an array of artists from all walks of life, like their newest signing June Jones. “Good Girl” operates with this hyper pulse that’s definitely infectious, tugging you into the pulse even as the vocals come across with a bit of steadied calm. Every time I press play, I imagine what it’d be like if Stephin Merritt wrote club bangers, so I’m glad there’s an artist like June Jones to fill that void. Fall into those electropop vibes below.

The Planes Share Thrift Store Lyric Video

Brooklyn band the Planes are tearing up the kind of pop rock old punks like myself can really dive into, hitting all the melodic notes while still bringing just enough of an edge to make us still feel cool. Drums kick this song off and the guitars and vocals immediately rush in; they seem to be working against each other, with the vocals cresting through this hazy pop vibe as the guitar notes jangle furiously, trying to push the pace the whole time. If you were trying to find that cool edge, wait until the solo hits, then you’ll hear heavy riffs cutting right through a la Teenage Fanclub; I love the way the guitar stabs build the tension up immediately following that moment. Looking for an anthemic sing-a-long? Well, read the lyrics on your screen and then grab the Dark Matter Recycling Co., out September 15th via Totally Real Records and Safe Suburban Home.

The Five Year Plan Prep Debut Album

Okay, so perhaps the groundwork for the debut was written nearly 40 years ago, but The Five Year Plan has finally made the recording of the aforementioned record! Still, they wanted to stay true to the original demos, so recorded them as is, all technological advances aside. The band features members of acts like Heavenly and Charlie Tipper Rebellion, so you’ll hear some familiar sounds if you’ve hear us write about those acts. It’s amazing to hear a band create songs that sound so relevant now, but also be able to hear the licks and nods they were putting into their own craft…mentions of Go Betweens and The Only Ones never hurt at this house. It was a long time coming, and we’re so glad the band are finally getting to have their say in the music world. 1985 will be released on Breaking Down Recordings on September 4th.

Jeff Rosenstock Share Another Tune from Hellmode

I’m really hoping that folks realize that even your favorite punks can jam out some solid acoustic ballads, especially if they listen to this new tune from Jeff Rosenstock. For the most part, listeners are pulled in by careful string strums and Jeff’s dynamic vocal delivery; he reminds me of Jeffrey Lewis a lot on this performance. As the track progresses, Jeff stretches his vocals a bit, perhaps letting diehard fans know he’s still trapped in the box you’ve put him inside. Don’t forget, the album Hellmode will be out on September 1st via Polyvinyl.
