Helpful People Share Title Track from Brokenblossom Threats

If I were to find faith in musical humanity, it has to be with people latching onto the latest from Helpful People, the duo of Carly Putnam and Glenn Donaldson. The track if fueled by this steady strum, almost muted in its notes, with little twinkles of keys or synths bubbling up from beneath to add some textural elements. Putnam’s voice is really special in this performance, never wavering from the solemnity that seems to drive each lyrical line. You can feel a bit of Glenn’s latest work slide in too, particularly in the middle of the tune where space opens up to this delighting musical excursion. Helpful People will release Brokeblossom Threats via Tall Texan on August 27th!

Healing & Peace Release New EP

I get sent tons of music, and I honestly give everything at least 30 seconds. Some stuff goes right in the delete pile, but then there’s something like Healing & Peace that just begs you to share with your friends. The band is comprised of players from Future Nuns and Kneeling in Piss, neither of which were on my radar, but now I also have that to look towards. For my meaningless two cents, the group reminds me of a folkier version of Television Personalities, with sprinkles of Comet Gain atop the mix to provide an added layer of cheer for nerds like me. I definitely felt awestruck when I turned on “New Utopian Futures;” the dual vocals easily win here. You’ll find a couple of punkier numbers in the mix too, like “Roman a Clef” or “Falling Down Laughing.” Stream the whole thing below!

Steven Adams Announces Drops

Imagine turning on a record and hearing your favorite parts of modern indiepop sounds fused with the fuzzy pop of greats like Grandaddy…that’s where this new Steven Adams track hit me. There’s moments when it feels playful and coy, like letting you in on this catchy little secret. Then, you get a little plot twist and the song opens up entirely, taking on that natural gallop with guitars running alongside one another as the urgency crests into this really sweet melodic moment from Adams. This is one of those song’s I just couldn’t get enough of, from the moment I pressed play, all the way until the end, it’s just a straight ripper. Steven Adams will be releasing Drops via Fika Recordings on November 10th.

The Serfs Announce Half Eaten By Dogs

This fresh tune from the Serfs, accompanied by an album announcement, was the tune and groove I didn’t know I needed. At times, there’s some synth work that has that crystalline stab like a record from the Knife. But, there’s this heady pulse being pushed here, squeezing every ounce of cool into these shuffling beats working in the undercurrent. Little vocal samples creep and lurk around every corner, but the core vocal is cold and distant, almost indifferent to the twist and turn of every beat bouncing off your bedroom walls. This feels like my soundtrack, the groove for a kid who can’t dance but does it anyways; the band release Half Eaten by Dogs via Trouble in Mind Records on October 27th.

Babytooth Drop Pop Rock Hit, Hey Minnow

Give yourself a full 25 seconds to immerse yourself in this jam from Portland’s Babytooth; if you do so, you’ll be absolutely sold on their pop rock styling. Distinctive vocals toy with the modern indie fare, but that 24th second immediately sells you on the band’s promise; it brings with it this bounding energy that magically courses right through, punching you right in the teeth. Somehow, the song still manages to maintain that intimacy, as if you’re the long attendee at a secret Babytooth house show meant only for you. You can feel a bit of an edge waiting to get out here, and I think if you spend some time with the group’s self-titled LP, you’ll find exactly what you need. Babytooth is available today via Antiquated Future.

Melody Fields Share Hallelujah Single

I know it’s early in the day, but I can’t help other than to indulge myself with this sweet tune from Sweden’s Melody Fields. Honestly, everything about this track feels like a seedy early 90s dance track; its got this almost tribal percussive element, bouncing along to these keys as the track swirls with these delicious ups and downs. There are some vocal samples in and out, but they’re more like ghostly whispers or folks grooving on the floor to this mystical world the group have created. This track is available via a new 7″, but it’s also expected on the forthcoming 1991 LP, out later via Coop/Nudie.

Lewsberg Share An Ear to the Chest

One of the albums I’m most excited about hitting this next month is the fresh LP from Lewsberg. I’ve been following the band thanks to 12XU the last few years, and this new single ups the ante on the band’s sound, kicking in a joyous bit of bounce. Arie’s matter-of-fact delivery has a similar style to Stephen Malkmus or maybe even Bill Callahan, which is given this buoyancy by the chiming guitar work. Those riffs are razor sharp, encircling you as the drums push on with a snappy kick that’ll have your head bobbing in no time. This will be a release the cool kids at your lunch table, or water cooler, are talking about for the next few months. Plus! They’re coming to the US in September and October, with a October 5th date in Austin. Out and About hits on September 15th.

Holy Wave – Five of Cups

For the past however many years, Holy Wave has been working in the Austin music scene, often times as the sort of bastard step-child of heavy-hitters the Black Angels, and sadly overlooked more often than not. Careful ears will have seen that the group have been gradually moving away from similarities, and Five of Cups is the perfect statement album, making the group a powerful beast all their own. Broke it down into track by track for you all, with some trite final thoughts at the end.

Brita Phillips and Kramer Share Video for Dream #3

Earlier this year, Shimmy Disc released this incredible Rings of Saturn Box Set; it was a collection of collaborative EPs in 7″ format, featuring tons of incredible artists like Brita Phillips (Luna/D&B) and Kramer. Now we’ve got an accompanying video for their track, created by none other than Kramer himself. The wash, or film style, takes on the dreaminess alluded to in the song’s lyrics, building on that sort of sleepy haze in your head. Musically, this song’s all about the careful tip-toeing of the vocals, creeping through your ears with sparkling melody that you’ll definitely find touching. Plus, there’s added bonus points for Austin’s Thor Harris fleshing out the textures with light marimba work! Rings of Saturn is available now!

Indianna Hale Shares Another Single from Yesterday’s Glitter

Admittedly, I have a cliche opinion about what San Francisco likely sounded like in the late 60s, and perhaps that’s filled with Hollywood misinformation…but even still, it seems like Indianna Hale has channeled the ghost of her current hometown. Her latest single is filled with groovy psychedelia and stunning musicianship. That said, it almost feels like the musical piece is really just a fancy get-up meant to set up the listener to swoon when Hale’s vocals open into their delightful croon. In fact, it almost feels like Indianna is haunting the Hollywood version of paisley paths, and I couldn’t be more stoked to spend more time with Yesterday’s Glitter; it drops on September 1st via Perpetual Doom.
