Check Out Something Better From Brother Bird

Caroline Glaser is a Nashville based songwriter who has been making music under the moniker Brother Bird for several years now. She’s never made the pages of ATH until today and this new single “something better” is certainly more than worthy of praise and recognition by us. I love the way this tune almost tricks you into thinking it might just be another indie pop song, but evolves and opens up into a straight rocker with loads of energy and glee. I hope you do check it out below.

This single is part of a new album from Brother Bird entitled another year due out March 8th. Pre-orders are live now.

Chanel Beads Signs to Jagjaguwar + Drop New Track

This is the first I’m hearing of Chanel Beads, and I’m definitely spending some time with the previous work of the project; they’ve just signed to Jagjaguwar, and dropped this new single that’s the perfect texturized bit of pop. In a sense, the track reflects the murky pop sounds of the Radio Dept, albeit spun with a more sterile feel, perhaps owing to the project being based in New York City. They layer beats, strings, vocal samples, creating this sublime relaxation, with each little accent piece nearing climax, only to be dragged back into the song’s core. It’s the perfect bit of dreary dream music you’ll need to get you over the hump today.

Elephant Stone Share History Repeating

Elephant Stone is aging like a fine wine? Have I said that before? Perhaps that’s just history repeating. Regardless, as they continue to step into a more expansive pop sound, as opposed to toiling in the tropes of modern day psych, I’ll admit that I’m totally enamored. There’s this warmth that’s always been hanging about in their work, but it seems more apparent here, accented by this great little wash of synths, which inevitably lifts the melody right to your ear. Vocals get some special backing moments too, layering in this nostalgic pop sound that nowadays seems fairly timeless. Still, while they’re working at being pop-centric, they’re still capable of creating mystical moments, as you hear in the latter half of this new jam. This song appears on their new LP, Back Into the Dream, out in February via Little Cloud Records.

Joe Ziffer Shares Night Falls Fast

I’m really intrigued by what Joe Ziffer is doing on his debut LP; I loved the first single, but was left a bit gobsmacked by this new one. The solemnity of Joe’s voice here is almost as haunting as it is lonesome. It works over this very light strum, with another textural layer placed atop so that you can feel the forlorn nature at play. There are moments when you’ll find yourself drifting, lost entirely within the confines of the little nuanced moments, such as the cleve bit of play just after the 2:30 mark. Long Shadows is shaping up to be a brilliant listen; it’s going to be available via Tenth Court on November 24th.

New Rosie Tucker Single + Austin Show

This one time, I had less than 48 hours to book a show at Red 7 here in Austin during SXSW; I somehow managed to grab Deeper and Boogarins and…Rosie Tucker. Their willingness to make it work, their charming set and their continued growth as a songwriting machine has made me an avowed fan, and now we can all revel in a new tune. As I listen to this track, having spent a lot of time with their previous records, I can’t help but notice how maybe the punch gets turned down in the mix on the front half of the tune, waiting to deliver this explosive drive that drags the song to a close. And, if you’re a fan, Rosie Tucker will be out on the road for a few dates, including an Austin date on November 16th at Mohawk. New song is available courtesy of Sentimental Records.

New Single From Psychic Shakes

It’s been far too long since I sang the praises of Max McLellan and his UK based musical project Psychic Shakes so I plan to remedy that today. Here for your listening pleasure if the new single, “Unfold You,” which is taken from the upcoming new album Forever Now. The single has a really simple, electronic beat driving things with a looping guitar and ever so delicate crescendos and shifts. It’s truly a lovely piece of songwriting.

Forever Now is due out on November 17th via Good Eye Records.

Heavenly Announce Third Reissue + US Show

It’s been a wonderful year for Heavenly fans, particularly if you’re hanging out on TikTok where the band exploded with their classic hit “P.U.N.K. Girl.” Luckily, the mass amount of streams and interest has encouraged the band’s reissue push, and now they’ve announced the third installment by reissuing the Decline and Fall of Heavenly in February of next year! Plus, the band have decided to reconvene in the live setting, with a show scheduled in Madrid and a show in NYC this coming June! Personally, I’m hoping for a Rob vs Calvin battle royale, but if not, at least you’ll get an incredible show with some of the most endearing pop songs you’ve ever heard. Grab the reissue HERE.

New Music from the Wild Kindness

Austin’s own the Wild Kindness recently released a new tune, and I swear I meant to cover it! But, I aim to rectify my errors by presenting you with that tune now, particularly as its a great piece of classic sounding indie pop that should hit all the right notes. For me, this feels like We Have the Facts-era Death Cab; Mike Alexis’ vocals and lyricism are the star of the tune, but the emotion of said tune comes from the cascading guitars in the distance. Really, the production and arrangements are what allow the voice to take on the focus; percussion hangs lightly, while strings and woodwind lift the tune; there’s even a brief little heavy jam in the middle that gives it a nice bit of punch too. Easy listening that’s easily likable, so get into it below.

Amelia Coburn Shares Peek at Debut LP

There’s been a bit of buzz overseas about Amelia Coburn, especially when Bill Ryder-Jones signed on to work with Amelia for her debut LP. Today, we get this great bit of dramatic pop that puts Coburn’s gifts on full-display. There’s this playfulness to the video version of the tune, something hinting at the magical notions that are toyed with in the lyrical content. Musically, this is pop of another era, though fittingly, right at home as everything old becomes news. Sweeping strings and bounding bits of old-time keys give the track proper movement as the tune pushes the vocals high into the mix. A nice introduction; we should know more about the new LP as the new year dawns.

Talk Show Share New Single and Video

London’s finest new band Talk Show really came on my radar around this time last year with the release of their Touch the Ground EP featuring hit single “Cold House.” After a few singles released over the last year, the band has now just announced a release date of February 16th for their debut LP entitled Effigy. It features the previously heard jam “Closer,” and this brand new joint “Gold” which dropped late last week. You can certainly hear some 90s electro-rock inspiration in these tunes combined with a tense post-punk energy from leading man Harrison Swann.

Pre-orders are now live for Effigy via UK label Missing Pieces.
