TR/ST Share Brand New Single

B.Gray and I love TR/ST; we’ve loved the project since before the “u” was syntactically replaced. Today there’s a new bop from the dark electronica act, the first we’ve heard since 2019’s Destroyer LP. Weirdly, the groove on this one reminds me of a shadowy version of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face,” operating with this rhythmic pulse that almost seems like it’s got spring yet never goes all the way over. That said, there’s some mystery to the TR/ST puts into his craft, allowing all the shadows to creep into his work, making it perfect for club nights before last call. Dais Records has just signed the artist, with the promise of a new EP coming in 2024.

Bouncing Pop from Mike Rowave

Really got stuck on this Mike Rowave track this morning, as it offered the perfect little midweek snack for me, kicking with just enough exuberance to get my toes tapping at 6 am. Musically, the song is something you might consider Drums or Beach Fossils adjacent, though I’ll admit the surfy notes feel a little more bent on electronic vibes, providing you with a spinning goth version of your favorite pop sounds. So maybe your week has been fairly “mid” as the kids like to tell me, and you need a ramp up. Drop into this track and let your day start off having a blast.

Fresh Big Bill Track! Featuring Chucky Blk!

Long ago we worked with Big Bill over at ATH Records, the home of legends I like to think. Since then, the band has continued their rise in the Austin scene, but more importantly, they’ve continued to push themselves as a band. Currently, they’re at work on a new record, thus they’ve dropped us a new track featuring another local heavy-hitter, Chucky Blk. The song opens up with a jittering stomp, marching forward as singer Eric Braden delivers his distinctive vocal crawl. His narration introduces us to a new character, and thus Chucky takes over the microphone delivering an incendiary stanza of magical poetry. We’re yet to know if this tune appears on the new LP, but it’s a hit worthy of listening to today!

Happy Like This Video from the Wind-Ups

A little over a month ago, the Wind-Ups dropped their latest LP, Happy Like This…and today we get a video version of the album’s title track. For all intents and purposes, it’s a skate promo, which matches up with the song’s lyrical content…”I’m happy like this.” Musically, you could file it under a mixture between various genres of punk; it’s a little bit gritty in spots, but also manages to sound huge and anthemic like you’d expect from a Spits record. Just goes to show that a little bit of proper noise can go a long way. If you’re interested in hearing more, might we suggest picking up Happy Like This from Mt. St. Mtn.

Fading Yellow Drop New EP

Looking over my shoulder, it seems I missed the debut EP from Austin’s Fading Yellow, which is a quick little listen that would certainly fit into my listening rotation. The music’s got a bit of that rolling psychedelic buzz you would ascribe to a Stereolab fan, but you can hear more modern pop touches lurking in the tracks too, with guitar work that reminds me of early Of Montreal. Below I’ve got the most immediately tasty join on the EP, but, I advise you to dig in as the band push their sound a bit in some of the other spaces. The Infinites Announce New Record

The Infinites have been one of our favorite acts in the Austin scene; the band’s full of ties to our own ATH Records, with members of both Zoltars and the Hermits playing on this record…and we couldn’t be happier to see them all land on one of our favorite labels, Meritorio! Our first single offers listeners a glimpse at the group’s propensity for offering an indie rock groove; you can feel the movement in the way the song goes up and down, constantly moving and growing. Jared’s vocal work is some of his best today, coolly riding that steady movement as the guitar lines seem to dance all around him. If you haven’t listened to the band before, might we suggest also spending some time with their self-titled debut. Archetypes will be out on February 16th via Meritorio Records–Pre-Order it HERE!

New Stuff from Jim Nothing

Just the other day we caught wind of new Jim Nothing, so we let it resonate a bit, returning today to remind you of how great the New Zealand outfit is. You are instantly met by this motorik beat of sorts, thumping and pumping the rhythmic pulse of the song right through your speakers. Guitars begin to shimmer between the lines, teasing you as you await the vocals. Those vocals come in, quick and fast, running through your mind as guitars scream at you. A bit of an emphatic close with a stomp and gang vocals, and now we’re all left to wonder…will there be more? And when?

The Maureens Share Fell in Love

I can’t understand why more folks don’t tune into the Maureens; they’ve got the same pop sensibility as modern-era Teenage Fanclub, albeit with just a little bit more sentiment. There’s something in their songwriting that feels like it was raised on their parent’s record collection, then ramped up with a modern bit of charm and swollen melodies. You press play here and you’ll immediately be hit with a wall of emotion, with a closing moment that feels like a climax in and of itself. This is the song you deserve today, and you can also build some anticipation for Everyone Smiles, out on January 19th via Meritorio Records.

High Pitched Scream Release Falsehead

Was in the need of a bit of noise to get me out of my morning slumbers today, and this track from High Pitched Scream was perfectly fitting. It opens with this huge wall of feedback, purposefully keeping you on edge from the moment the drums start crashing down. The song’s success lives in the balance between that noise and the vocals, which offer a softer center, like the center of a Tootsie Roll pop; you’re going to want to get to the center in less than three licks. As the track unfolds, you can hear the musicianship on display, letting the song kind of meander here and there, throwing blasts of noise at you all along the way.

Late Bloomer Share Self Control

We’re busy over here working on year end lists for albums and songs and other various randomness while still blasting new jams as they come in. My new jam of the day comes from Charlotte based band Late Bloomer who caught my ear last week with this new tune “Self Control.” It has this hints of emo to start things off, but then kicks into a full fledged alt-rock number with an ever so slight slide guitar to offer a Southern hint here and there. Lots of emotion, crescendos and energy. Carry on.

This track will be part of a new album coming in 2024. More details to come.
