Chemtrails Say Join Our Death Cult

London outfit Chemtrails have opted to leave the lo-fi production work of their early recordings in order to enhance the vibe on their new LP, The Joy of Sects. Their latest single definitely wears a bit of that studio perfection; you can hear it in the way the vocals get get intertwined perfectly creating this little hook that has your head spinning. But, the band still are driving this thumping psychedelia, often times brooding and other moments sputtering into a smashing bash of joy. When it all subsides, there’s this great bit of buzz trailing behind, locking in the band’s ability to hit all sorts of rock n’ roll notes. The Joy of Sects is out via PNK SLM on January 19th.

It’s always crazy to me how a video can completely sell a song, or a band as is the case with Get Wrong. The band, comprised of Adam from Spook School and Naomi from Martha, have just released their debut EP, which offers their pop sensibility spun through a more beat-oriented world. But, this video manages to catch the spirit of the two artists, grinning from ear to ear as they walk about the countryside, even scrubbing down a huge hog. That joy manages to shine through in their songwriting, so you’ll best be served by bopping to this tune, then be sure you stream the rest of their Get Wrong EP (courtesy of Father Daughter Records and Alcopop).

Lamplight Announce Self-Titled LP

While it may be sunny here in Austin today, there’s bound to be some colder climes, patiently waiting for the music of Lamplight to brilliantly warm their souls. Every musical step here carries this weighted intent, with the edges of the tune billowing with emotional arrangements; I loved the piano plodding, but the twang of the slide guitar and gentle horns just lift this track to the heavens. In a way, it feels like something Pedro the Lion adjacent, albeit with huge feels that are pretty near inescapable. There’s this nostalgia to it, even in the lyrics, all of it allowing the song to just sit with you, stay awhile with your heart. Western Vinyl was surely on to something when they agreed to release the band’s self-titled LP next March!

Special Pillow Share Fond and Foggy

The Special Pillow are like that little rock you found along your beach walk; you put it in your pocket as a reminder of all the great walks along said beach, occasionally taking it out to be reminded of all the charms. Today, the New Jersey pop purveyors are here to remind us of their songwriting prowess, bringing news of a fresh EP as well! Those of you in the nerdy pop realms will surely be swept away; it has that sort of Belle and Sebastian (the Jeepster era) charm to it, using horn/string work to grow the steady toe-tapping trance you’re likely to find within its confines. It’s a gift for us all to find folks still crafting this perfected poetic pop we can put in our pockets and treasure years down the line. They’ll release The Special Pillow Meets the Space Monster on February 16th via Zofko.

Friko Share For Ella Video

As a “writer” I probably throw comparisons around more often than I should, but when I listened to this new Friko track, I was immediately transported back to the first time I heard Elliott Smith. Musically, it’s a bit different, though I think Smith would have appreciated the sweeping string arrangements that factor into the song’s emotional appeal. For me, it was Niko Kapetan’s voice, calling me with this light whisper that transports melodies on the faint breeze; it’s gentle qualities offer this supreme intimacy that I hope I share when I sing my kids to sleep. This is a special one my friends; the band release Where We’ve Been, Where We Go From Here in February via ATO Records.

Topographies Share Night Sea

We’re nearing that end of year time in the ATH offices, but of course we still have time to sneak in some jams before the end of the year. Topographies out of San Francisco certainly want to be considered for year end list praise with a new single like this one, “Night Sea.” It’s a super dark wave, meets industrial sort of tune with very subtle hints of bright synths to give it some stellar pop vibes. Normally this might be an IT Department tune. Today it’s for us all.

Topographies will release a new album entitled Interior Spring on February 2nd via Dark Entries. Pre-orders are live now.

The BVs Announce Taking Pictures of Taking Pictures

I’m a bit late to this one, and by that I mean that three days is entirely too late to share the joy of the new BVs track for you. We’ve always loved the group, but this new single has them taking their buoyant brand of pop to the top; I almost jumped right out of my chair and started bouncing about in my classroom. That crushing guitar line shoves you right through the door, with this faint since of longing hanging about in the tones, all of it making me feel like I’ve finally found a musical home. It’s energetic and magical and you’ll find that you can’t pull yourself away. I didn’t even realize how much the band were huge sports enthusiasts either…as you can see in this fun video! They’ll drop Taking Pictures of Taking Pictures via Shelflife and Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten on February 16th.

Coucou Babe Share High Again

As the year draws to a close, we get to spend our year jamming out to some of the stuff we maybe missed, or perhaps something slid into our listening rotation out of nowhere, so here we are with Coucou Babe. The project is a dreamy pop act out of Austria, though with roots tied to Nashville. When I listened, I recall the earlier days of Beach House, taking these clever little keyboard driven soundscapes and building them with a wash of atmosphere and foggy vocals carrying a bit of wonder. Just a fun way to start off the week, as we know you’ll all be clamoring for year end lists; try something new instead!

Wishy Share Spinning Single

Wishy might be hitting at the perfect time, gathering lots of buzz due to the pedigree of songwriter Kevin Krauter and Nina Pitchkites. Today they’ve unleashed the third single from their forthcoming LP, offering up the brand of joyous 90s style pop that would have fit perfectly in the soundtrack of My So Called Life. There’s just the faintest hint of distorted guitar work buried deep in the mix, but giving off a bulky edge. Otherwise, the song completely churns in the waters of dreamy pop; the vocals have this great comfort, allowing you to sort of melt right into them. It’s a perfect little gem, and one that continues to raise the hype for the Paradise EP; it drops December 15th via Winspear.

I know Spotify is the devil, so please pass judgment knowing that I know it’s the devil, but I can’t turn my back on the beast…not to mention, the ease of access for everyone, which is where Spotify dominates the market. Alas, yes, I’m using Spotify for my playlist…until Bancamp offers me something better, but even they can’t be trusted anymore! So, I’ll just wrap up last week on my one! ATH Wrapped! We covered a lot of music, with some heavy-hitters like Real Estate, JAMC and Ducks Ltd. popping off with new stuff. There was a ton of tuneage from Australia: Pop Filter, Sachet, The Brights, Alluvial Nuggets and Good Morning. Plus, I’m flipping a coin between the Umbrellas and Bolis Pupul for my fave track of the week. What’s yours? Find out below!
