Wut Drop Guts Brains Single

This Wut record is shaping up to just be an eleven track collection of pop hits, with another sample of that bounding joy presented below. The Vancouver act definitely feels like they’ve put on their Pacific NorthWest sweaters this morning, as you’ll surely hear early K Records nods to the drumming and recording style on this gem. Their whimsical overlapping vocal work textures the song with varying layers of melody, so much so that you’re likely to find yourself ensnared in the dense pit of pop layers. You’d also be near the bullseye if you threw your darts at a bit of an Oceanic nod, and you know that’ll keep silly folks like me coming back to this one. Wut will release Mingling with the Thorns via HHBTM on August 23rd.

Lunar Vacation Share Tom Single

While I’ve dabbled in being a fan of Lunar Vacation, I’m totally onboard with their next record, at least from the three tunes we’ve heard, including this new single below. On the surface, it’s just a generally good pop rock number, with a chorus that has all the right elements to cast a spell over you. That said, it’s the nuanced little moments in the band’s craft that really ask you sit with the record; go to the 2:13 second mark, where the dreaminess is pulled apart for just a little more playfulness and tension building, pushing you up that pop mountain only to reach the top and shoot you joyously down the other side with a big ol’ grin upon your face. Everything Matters Everything’s Fire is out September 13th via Keeled Scales.

Fake Fruit Share Gotta Meet You Single

Just a couple of weeks now and we’ll get to hear the entirety of Mucho Mistrust, but in the meantime, Fake Fruit have left us with a skronking post-punk piece that erupts into an all out jam session. They waste no time here, wiggling in with off-kilter percussion and a bopping sax squeal that sets the pace for the vocals to chase down. While the lyrics chase down everything, those notes move and squirm, always evading, adding to this sort of unstructured I style that’s as disorienting as it is intriguing. And then…it just starts to shake, the edges becoming obscured and everything starts to shake disorderly, prompting a closing freakout that’s the perfect exclamation mark! Mucho Mistrust is out via Carpark Records on August 23rd.

Peel Dream Magazine Offer Central Park West Video

As we’ve gone through the album cycle for the forthcoming Peel Dream Magazine LP, I’ve admittedly been on board, though knowing that those early singles were treading water in the band’s past. But, that stops now, with this airy new single that shifts the sound into something a little bit more ornate, almost theatrical in nature. Honestly, and perhaps I’m a bit jaded, but it feels like something one would claim as Sufjan adjacent, even down to the instrumentation and accompaniment…and while that might seem like a knock, there’s a brightness that turns in at 2:15 where the track gets an energetic lift to tether it to the earlier singles out there. Rose Main Reading Room is out on September 4th via Topshelf Records.

Naked Roommate Announce Pass the Loofah

Berkeley outfit Naked Roommate continue with their household themed LPs, announcing today that they’ll be following the excellent Do the Duvet with the forthcoming Pass the Loofah. Their first album definitely had the fingerprints of an ESG fan all over it, but, if we’re going off this tune, they might be spinning that into more body propulsion, diving into the pulse of the electronic grooves and forcing your body to observe dancefloor traditions. And, as much as one likes to lock into the vibe, the personal favorite touch is near the end of the song where the synths begin to feel a touch more explorative, rising behind the pulse like the early morning sun peaking over the horizon. Their last LP was a secret smash hit, so expect this to be huge; Pass the Loofah drops on October 25th via Trouble in Mind Records.

Sovereign Citizen Share No Way Jose (Not Today Pepe)

After opening with a pure pop piece, I figured we’d spin the site in an entirely different direction, bringing back a sort of old school late punk feel from Sovereign Citizen. Shuffling riffs are the backbone, kicking a vibe that’s reminiscent of the Clash or the Libertines, something I’m enjoying as I settle into my work day. The chorus of “no way Jose/mi casa es su casa/not today Pepe” is definitely catchy, albeit a little cliche; it’s the sort of rip you’d pull to get the kids in the audience working on your side, everyone singing along. If you need an old school pick, this is the one for you.

Lerryn Shares As a Mother Single

Felt like you should start the midweek off with a spring in your step, and this Lerryn tune might just be the one to help you off on the right foot. Beginning with a strong vocal and a soft piano line, the song quickly moves into the infectious nature with a bubble of bass, then the rhythm completely takes off. You could easily hear the song rinse and repeat, and it wouldn’t hurt, but at the 52 second mark, the song blisters, revealing a fresh layer of pop sensibility that charms. It goes back, only to have a little tickle from the keyboard and a punctuated drive of the vocals, sharing another pop plot twist. All of this sweetness hides the serious nature, with Lerryn confronting her own thoughts on motherhood, and what that means for both mother and child. You’ll catch this song on the As a Mother EP, which is out September 13th via Redundant Span Records.

Rock n’ Recipes: Blood

If you haven’t been following our site over the last few months, you might have missed all the great singles that Blood dropped before releasing their excellent Loving You Backwards LP this past Friday. We’re big fans, and were bummed when they left our city to venture off to greener pastures, but it seems to have worked out well for the music. We reached out Tim to ask a few questions and get a quick little recipe for a delicious peanut-butter and pickle sammy! Check out our talk with Tim and the recipe below. And stream the LP right now. And hopefully my horseradish pickles are in the mail!

TR/ST Share Dark Day Single

As you’ve probably noticed over the last year, I’ve definitely been indulging more in the electronic side of the industry; it’s always been part of my listening, but maybe got pushed to the side as I was trying to keep up with the Joneses…and now who cares. So, here we are with a new bop from ATH faves TR/ST. Alfons distinctive delivery continues to hold me in its grasp, particularly as it gets manipulated in and out of his delivery. This tune’s build up until about the 1:26 mark before dropping into the club thump is just perfect, letting you get your feet under you before you dance off into the club’s shadows…which is my style as I’m mostly a soloist dancer. Performance will be out on September 13th via Dais.

Alt-Pop Jam From ICHIWAWA

Traditional, sort of radio ready pop music is something we have always steered clear of and leave it to the big boys to cover for the most part. Chances are, you already read about it or heard it elsewhere. Worcester, MA based ICHIWAWA delivers an alternative style of pop music that resonates with me and fits roughly into a sort of bedroom or DIY genre within the genre. The single “Slow Down, My Guy,” should serve as a great introduction to this artist with a DIY beat and hints of shoegaze and dream as well. More to come.
