Class Share Milkman Single

Less than a year ago, Class released the rad record, If You’ve Got Nothing, and they’ve turned it around with another release slated to drop this Friday. Today, before the album drops, we’ve got this jagged bit of garage pop that should garner a listen or seven. There’s definitely a punk nod on this, particularly in the way the vocals almost seem to pogo into the picture, though in a sedate manner; they do burst forth emphatically when you hit the hook and the chorus, as they should. I love the marching drum roll that sets up the chorus, then it hits you with these gang vocals and pounding piano notes; it’s a huge sound with crunchy rock n’ roll flare. Best in Class! Grab A Healthy Alternative this Friday from Feel It Records.

Premiere: Palomino Blond Drop Plain View Single

Miami based upstarts Palomino Blond have already released a couple of singles this year leading to some organic buzz building around the band (see “Left” here and “Understand” here). Prior to an album drop on Friday, we are pleased to share this brand new single with you all called “Plain View.” If you know me, my new music tastes trend towards something unique or a refreshing take on an older genre. Both things are true for me on this track as the band take a sort of late 90’s grunge sound and twist it up with heavier, emotional lyrics and a hint of bright shoegaze. I think you’ll dig it.

Palomino Blond will release this as part of a new album entitled You Feel it Too which drops this Friday via Kanine Records. Pre-orders are live now.

Dean and Britta and Sonic Boom

Really, if you’ve been on the indie side of the musical pond, just the names of Dean & Britta & Sonic Boom should mean something to you, and well, they’ll mean more now that three have joined forces to set up for a holiday album titled A Peace of Us. What better way to announce this blessed union than by sharing a classic from Willie Nelson, “Pretty Paper,” working with a stripped down affair that works around a well crafted electronic background, toying with the dueling vocals that buoy the pop sensation throughout. In a strange way, it also kind of sounds like a B-side from an early Magnetic Fields tune, and I’m here for it. Carpark Records will release the album on November 22nd.

Nap Eyes Share Dark Mystery Enigma Bird

Perhaps we’re way off base here, but listening to the new Nap Eyes single, I feel like I’m in the hippest jazz bar around; there’s a great crooner on the mic, locked into this charming delivery, towering over the audience. Behind him, the best band in town, working on crafting a solid level of percussion and rhythm, and in doing so, they’ve built this realm where you can imagine our crooner spinning and grinning before an adoring audience. But, as the track furthers, fiery guitars shoot across the horizon, filling out the room before them, and suddenly you feel alive. It’s a powerful move, taking it from a solo performance to a full audience experience. They drop The Neon Gate on October 18th via Paradise of Bachelors and Paper Bag Records.

ACL WE1 Preview

Hey, everybody. Time for ACL Festival to takeover Zilker. Will I see you on the lawn?

I’ll be out and about both weekends, but let’s start with general tips and tricks and some highlights for those of us attending. The festival certainly isn’t the sanctuary of indie/Austin vibe it was in the past, but the kids do dig it and we certainly have some entertaining headliners and potential drama to fill your battle card.

Red Sleeping Beauty’s October Pop Single

What a treat this year has been for fans of the Swedish pop outfit, Red Sleeping Beauty, and here we are in October with their new single from their monthly pop series. This is a heavy synth wash, working really carefully by driving a heavy bubble beneath the smoothed vocal delivery. Vocals and drum samples weave in and out, with synthetic musical spotlights shining through to put a little shine on the hooks that drive the band’s sound. The sad thing? There’s only two more months of delicious pop, and we’re salivating to hear what’s in store before 2024 wraps up.

Fred Thomas Announces Window in the Rhythm

For as long as I can remember, Fred Thomas has been a part of my indie experience; I think one of my earliest grabs from the college radio station was a promo copy from Saturday Looks Good to Me, though I think his solo album Changer might be one of my favorites. So, like Fred on his new work, I begin to look at the past and how it defines the future, how my tastes or my life has evolved. Thomas, narrates his own journey, and much of what we’re told about Window in the Rhythm is a statement on that reflection; he’s looking back, but even looking the organization of the LP, you can see that things have changed, or grown. His storytelling is very much the same, almost matter-of-fact sincerity, but the musical landscape takes time to breathe, letting you absorb the craft in its entirety. Really looking forward to hearing the rest of this; Window in the Rhythm is out via Polyvinyl this Friday…vinyl to ship later!

A New Mount Eerie Single

Sure, you were supposed to hear this Mount Eerie single yesterday, and hopefully you gave it a listen. But, if not, then you can certainly stop in here today and give it a sample. Going through it several times now, the minimalism in the verse is what perfectly brings me back to the early joys of Mount Eerie; the sampled backdrop works perfectly for Phil’s voice, reminding me of the joys of discovering acts like Pedro the Lion and, well, the Microphones. Simple and emotional, even in its brevity it accomplishes so much. A new album, Night Palace, will be out on November first via P.W. Elverum & Sun.

hhhhhh Share Return Receipt + Drop The Loooooong Goodbye

Been a hot minute since I really indulged in a more classical brand of paisley psychedelia, but this new single from hhhhhh is hitting the spot. Despite all the swirling guitar work that seduces the listener, it’s the finer details of this song that really pull you into the shadowy realms. From the gentleness of the voice to the heavenly twist of the backing vocals, you feel as if you’re tiptoeing across the morning dew, angelically traipsing through the wintry woodlands. Love a good visit to the sounds of yore, and if you’re like me, slide into the new LP, The Loooooong Goodbye.

Cast of Thousands Share So Much Better

We’ve been keeping our eye on Cast of Thousands, particularly as we worked with songwriter Max Vandever and his band Flesh Lights on our own little label. They just dropped a brand new single from their next LP, Third House. While there’s still a bit of attitude on the new project’s songwriting, Max has turned his craft into punching out way bigger hooks this go round. You’ll reap the rewards once you crank the volume up real high, relishing in the swagger of good old fashioned rock n’ roll. They’ll be dropping Third House next week, so get ready to salute those about to rock.
