Little Oso Share Metaphorical Ohio

The scene up in the other Portland is alive and apparently super rad, that is if you’re listening to Little Oso. Today they’re sharing the second track from their new LP, How Lucky to be Somebody, and it’s got that frivolous Friday vibes that finds you twirling and swirling about your living room with a big old smile crawling upon your face. While there’s some sharp guitar notes dancing in the background, the vocals up front embrace this crystalline tone that resonates with a natural joy. Each time the music jets off, the vocals race to catch up, and then it seems as if everyone finds themselves back in the same space, riding the melody to the close. Really great single that should have you ordering the album from Repeating Cloud; it drops on January 17th.

The Gentle Spring Prepare Looking Back at the World

Did you miss Michael Hiscock? Well, I certainly did, as I’m a huge fan and secretly hoping that SkepWax might release a vinyl version of Where’d You Learn to Kiss That Way (should I do it?). Alas, this is about Michael and his new project The Gentle Spring, a name that seems to exemplify the first track on the group’s new record. You’ll find the light strum and Hiscock’s voice immediately offer up the lightness of Spring, a breeze, light and airy, blowing the warmth of the sun upon your face. As the track steadies and blows, I really love the little details billowing in the background; it textures the tune whilst adding a deeper melodic center you’ll adore. Looking Back at the World will be out the day after my birthday on. January 17th, courtesy of the kind humans in SkepWax/TooGoodToBeTrue.

Holding Hour Share Colors Talk + Release Parallel Lines EP

If the first song you hear today is the latest track from Holding Hour, you’re going to be okay today. They toss the song out with a heavily rumbling guitar note, it turns and twist while the vocals carefully traipse about in the middle of the mix. But, the plot twists just before the 1 minute mark, bringing the vocals forward and offering the listener (that’s you!) just a bit more melody to hold onto. They return to the softened confines of the single, lurking in its midst before moving back; they even add a new guitar layer the second go round! All of this is the sort of care you’ll find when you listen to Parallel Lines, which is officially out today along with this single, offering five fresh takes on brooding pop music.

Today now marks just one short week away from Levitation Festival kicking off in downtown Austin on Halloween night and running through the weekend. We rather enjoy these quick snapshots of bands coming into town and we hope you also appreciate the exposure to artists you maybe weren’t aware of, or didn’t know so much about. Buddie Drop Impatient

Maybe you’re already hip to Buddie, but if not, let us assure you that the Vancouver squad are going to be one of your favorite things to slide into today. They’re offering up the modern blend of grunge and noise rock, though my favorite thing is that they never shy away from dropping in a huge hook. The vocals perfectly build up, trudging through the murkiness of heavy riffs and shoe-gaze-y shoot-offs, climbing this tonal mountain then dropping back into to meet the listener with a warm blast of melodic notes. Abdomen Share Yes I Don’t Know Single

There’s very little out there about Dutch trio Abdomen, but I’ve been really fascinated by their sound as I continue to crank up the volume. A sneaky start of snapping snare soon opens up to stabbing strokes on the guitar; there’s an ominous feel with another layer working beneath, building this sort of industrial fusion with post-punk vibes. When the vocals enter, they’re sort of muted, as if they’re just echoing from down the hall. Blasts of noise are a warning sign of what’s to come, increasing the tension as the drums join in and the song begins to embrace its own danger. Fucking cool as hell, and a glimpse at what’s to come on their debut album, which will drop via FatCat Records in February.

Glosser Share Silver Star Single

The chorus of this new Glosser single is enough to sweeten the deal for any listener, but the more times I play this track, the more I appreciate that it begins amiss. The beats seem to work against the center of the track, consistently pushing the tune in another direction. It’s the perfect set up; it’s the perfect rise and fall; it’s the perfect musical element to match the sentiment of the ups and downs of absolute infatuation, which is the tune’s narrative sentiment. You’ll hear this tune on the group’s new Angel Dust EP, out on November 15th via If This Then Records.

Quin Galavis Shares New Single

Songwriter Quin Galavis has been around the Austin scene for quite awhile now, and we’ve been fortunate to watch from the sidelines as his craft has transformed from his full band work to his more recent solo stuff…but boy are you in for a surprise on his new single. Naturally brooding, Quin exhibits the patience here that allows him to draw the maximum emotion from the listener; you can feel the tension has he carefully walks his voice along the guitar path. Percussive elements don’t even bother entering the fray until after the one minute mark, allowing tension to build and build, though it never fully unfurls before us. There’s some fleshing out of the tune courtesy of Annecy Liddell and some guy named Thor Harris. Define Your Time, Quin’s new album, will hit on Novebmer 20th, with lots of special details in the mix.

Generifus Share Body and Mine + Release Summerberrys

Everyone’s trying to cram as much new music into the end of the year as possible, so let’ add the latest release from Generifus to the mix of things I’ve had on rotation. The single below shares the brightness in the guitar style that runs through Summerberrys, which still resonates as we near record days of heat over here in Texas. What I was drawn towards, and perhaps this is due to my indulgence in the style, but something about Spencer’s voice this go round feels very Oceanic; it has that casualness allowing for the narration of a well-lived life. You’ll find the chorus offering up some sweet rewards too, so indulge below.

Sharon Van Etten & the Attachment Theory Announce Debut LP

I’ll be upfront here; I did not enjoy the last Sharon Van Etten record. I love her voice, and its got such huge range, but that LP let me down. So, here we are on new horizons for the artist, as she’s enlisted her band in the songwriting process, creating something that feels a little bit like a darkened twist on her previous work. For me, the synth stabs that operate in the shadows while Van Etten offers a shimmering vocal performance are what make this quite a jam for you. It kind of feels like the band have allowed her to revisit the darker side of her craftsmanship, so we’re looking forward to seeing what Sharon Van Etten & the Attachment Theory is really all about; the debut drops on February 7th via JagJaguwar.
