ACL 2015: Noteworthy Weekend Two Changes

ACL 2015 WE1 109Click that big top banner for tips from our experience last weekend.

We now know that Weekend One festival goers won the weather lottery. We dodged the forecasted rain, but it will be hot as hell with record setting temperatures on Sunday and don’t get me started about the ragweed forecast. My face is gonna hurt. I’ll be chasing photos; the true glamour of festival photography is shooting three, running to the next pit and waiting.

I do think this lineup is better than last weekend, especially on Saturday. Why? It comes down to added variety, added ATH approved jams and some rock and or roll.

  • Avers – My first band today did a fun interview with ATH during SxSW. Get silly early with me. Friday, Homeaway @ 11:30
  • Riders Against The Storm – Support the locals for this one. Best fusion band, but… Saturday, Austin Ventures @ 11:45
  • FIDLAR – Cuz, fuck it dog, life’s a risk. Most punk thing at ACL, prolly. Saturday, Miller Lite @ 12:00
  • Sounds Del Mar – More locals, a bit of a mashup group. This video rules. Saturday, BMI @ 4:30
  • Modest Mouse – Yeah, saw them at FFF, they’re back. Saturday, Honda @ 6:20
  • Knifight – Replacing Night Drive, these guys will go dark early. Sunday, Austin Ventures @ 11:45
  • Beat Connection – ATH faves and I want to hear my summer jam cuz it is gonna be summer hot. Sunday, Homeaway @ 12:00
  • Florence + The Machine – Ya know, they are gonna be a good way to walk out on a hot damn day. Sunday, Samsung @ 8:30

I Dig This Foreign Resort Track

foriegn resortThe Foreign Resort has been on my radar for a bit now, and regrettably, I missed the initial PR about this track last week. Thankfully, the band is announcing a quick US tour (no Austin date, sniffles) kicking off next week in the Boston area to get this song in my earholes. Some tracks form the Danes have been a little synthier, some a little darker, but this is a loving mix of organic, synth and noise into a perfect post-punk new wave sound that is in my wheelhouse. Vocals effectively buried and then up front and emo, I dig it.

The EP The American Dream lands via Moon Sounds Records on October 15th.

New Keep Shelly In Athens

ksiaEvery once in a while, a band meets you at the place you want to be. Keep Shelly In Athens has long been and ATH IT Department favorite, but this latest track is all up in my business. Bands, pay attention, this is the wheelhouse for eternal praise from me. Great bass line, lyrics that stand out or disappear depending on how loud you listen to the song and proper synth flourishes and 808 claps. Newer Wave.

The band will be in town just after festival season, Nov. 12th at the Empire Control Room, and I will be there. You can preorder Now I’m Ready here. Coming at eight tracks, it looks to be a concise LP/extended EP that will be a late add to many top records of 2015 lists.

Levitation Teases 2016 Lineup

LEVITATION-2016-square-1500-1030x1030For their ninth year in business as a festival, Austin Psych Fest has announced a preview of nine artists for Levitation 2016. The preview video is embedded below but check this out. While a few of the artists announced are festival stalwarts, we do have a few eyebrow raising teasers, one in particular. The list is as follows: Brian Wilson performing “Pet Sounds“, Animal Collective, Flying Lotus, Lee Scratch Perry, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Ty Segall.

Tickets are on sale already for weekend passes and camping. You can peep the lineup preview video embedded just below these words.

Have A Nice Weekend

11954700_925857714147486_5394631999859618569_nKraftwerk tonight (7pm show #earlybird). Dinner first at Blackbird and Henry. Gameday tomorrow. We tailgate with a random group of futbol and football fans at MLK and San Jac. I’ll be wearing a burnt orange shirt. Look for me.

PYAITK time. You ever hear a song and latch on to it, only to find out that it was by a band you would have NEVER thought would put this song out as a single? Here is one such song from a band I decided I wouldn’t pay attention to. You see, the sophomore slump is a real thing. Most bands have their whole lives writing the first album only to be out of experiences or worse, writing a hot mess on the road. After their intarwebs buzzband status from “Keep You” blowed them up, it would seem Wild Belle figured they would just go on attack with an in your face break up song as a lead single. “Giving Up On You” is raucous thing with a great bassline, ringing guitar chords, the horns echoed for a proper Ska solo. Color me surprised.

The Nites Are Free!!!

FFFNITESKeeping with tradition, Fun Fun Fun Fest wouldn’t have three funs without the added performances available to fest goers as part of the FFF Nites. This year’s selection of after party partying is brought to you by Hyundai and the Grammy Amplifier Program. Nathan loves his Hyundai.

Check it out, here are some blurbs from the PR stuff cause I don’t feel like retyping:

“The NITES shows will occur in various venues in downtown and east Austin including The Mohawk, Sidewinder, The Parish, Beerland, 611 Red River, Cheer Up Charlie’s, Empire Control Room, ACL Live, The New Movement Theater, Elysium, The North Door, Vulcan Gas Company, Kingdom, and The White Horse. A full NITES schedule will be announced on funfunfunfest.com closer to the event.”

“Now in its tenth year, Fun Fun Fun Fest has curated an impressive NITES lineup boasting both after show-only acts and festival performers including a full set from GZA, performances from Future Islands, Andrew W.K. (solo), Lagwagon, Mayhem, Skinny Puppy, Subhumans, Tig Notaro, Le Sins (Toro Y Moi DJ set), and more. NITES will also include performances from Hyundai GRAMMY Amplifier artists Cramer, Bonavox, and Barnaby Saints.”

Pretty exciting stuff…

Show Pics: 3 x 3 Series @ The Mohawk (9/21)

3x3 with Templo X 41We love live music. We love Austin artists. We want to help you love them, too. We need your help to keep bringing you the best jams for cheap. Go to our shows, buy our records. /rant

The 3 x 3 series is a brilliant idea. Let’s make it easy for venues to be open when we know it is a smaller show and get new bands exposure. We had another brilliant lineup for last Monday’s show. We got to check out the first live set for Mean Jolene, ever. We got to see Caitlin from Ultraviolet dedicate a song to her parents. We got to see Templo X for the last time in a while before Paul headed back up to Philly. I got to take pictures. It was a great night of talking with the musicians, busting balls about 90’s Emo bands and a ton of great new songs.

Show Pics: Get Up Kids & Diet Cig @ Mohawk (9/16)

The Get Up Diet Cig 83It was quite a night for Team ATH at The Mohawk earlier this week. Nathan is Emo kid. Hashtag child of he nineties. I relate. He gets excited about The Get Up Kids like I get excited about The Cure. That was the outside show. The inside show later was Diet Cig, a two-piece that has been heaped praise upon by us and much of the intarwebs. Turns out, they got in early to hang out and watch their openers, heh.

We have tons of pics from the night and a few notes. Get ready for Josh Berwanger, Hotelier, The Get Up Kids, Rose Selavy, Pleasure Venom and Diet Cig and then click read more…

ATX Popfest 2015

ATX Popfest 00It all started when Nathan ran his mouth about getting a bunch of bands together to celebrate just how damn good Austin’s Pop scene is right now. It is a renaissance. With long time ATH faves like Shivery Shakes, She Sir, Young Girls (HTX) and Letting Up Despite Great Faults, Popfest had a number of shiny new things to shimmy to including Templo X, Summer Salt, Polio Club, (new to me) MCG and new old friends in Tres Oui to round things out. Well, OK, Tres Oui is kinda Literature, but not really, so still “new”…

Pics and recap? Sure.
