Show Preview: Stephen Malkmus @ the Mohawk (2/22)

Date Wednesday, Feb 22nd
Location Mohawk
Doors 630 pm
Tickets $17 from Frontgate

It’s not like Stephen Malkmus really needs much of an introduction, or really needs to hand out incentives to come see his show at Mohawk on Wednesday.  He’s the main man from Pavement, who has carefully crafted a nice solo career since then.  You should go, period. But, you can also catch two great opening acts on the evening, Nurses and TV Torso. TV Torso are our local boys, banging out solidified indie rock tunes that stick in your head and echo in your ears. Nurses put out Draclua last year, a stunner of an album that really had the band turning heads…so get there to witness then in their glory. Two great opening acts and an indie legend. Need we say more?

New Ramones Cover from Black Tambourine! And EP!

One of the great acts in the Slumberland Records stable is Black Tambourine, a band that hasn’t exactly been putting out records for the last several decades.  But, as they reunite, briefly for the Chickfactor shows, the band opted to record a nice covers EP of their favorite Ramones songs.  This little gem will be released as a 7″, and they’ve chosen some real hits for their work.  One of the tracks they’ve recorded is my favorite, “I Want You Around,” but the track we’ve got below is “What’s Your Game.”  Rather than shredding guitars, they’ve replaced a nice atmospheric coating, slowing the track down a bit, and letting the melody push the track along.  For those of us that can’t attend the Chikcfactor shows, this is an added bonus.  You can pick up the OneTwoThreeFour EP on May 15th.

Terry Malts – Killing Time

Rating: ★★★★★

My first introduction to the music of Terry Malts stemmed from my love of the members’ former band, The Magic Bullets.  Unfortunately, the group was unable to find a full-time drummer, so opted to regroup as Terry Malts.  A few 7 inched piqued my interest, but when Killing Time arrived in my inbox, I had no idea just how much longevity this record would have.  From start to finish, it’s a polished bit of scuzzy guitars, pop hooks, pounding drums and hooks galore. So far, it’s the best record I’ve gotten my hands on this year.

“Something About You” lets the album explode from the get-go, offering listeners a bit of their traditional gaze-pop in the realm of Pains of Being Pure at Heart, only on speed (not that we condone drug usage).  The drums clatter, the guitars have a ferocious tenacity that propels the song for the entirety of just over two minutes. But, that’s about the last you’ll hear of your typical fare, as the group has more of a raucous punk sound, albeit one infused with elements of power-pop and post-punk atmospherics.

The most brilliant things about Killing Time is it’s ability to never grow stale sonically, whilst still holding onto album cohesiveness. “Tumble Down” has that affected guitar sound echoing in the background, but it’s the monosyllabic vocals touches that provide the song’s main hook.  This is the music you wish you had with you during those times when you need to display sheer exuberance.  If you’re not bouncing around, you’re not listening closely. You can group this song with “Waiting Room,” another song that really relies upon the stellar drumming to really give you a good kick in the ass. Corey Cunningham’s vocals have a deep quality, yet he’s got these tiny little changes in pitch that really add an extra element to every single track.

Terry Malts aren’t just sold on giving you one sound for the whole of the Killing Time; “I’m Neurotic” is one such testament.  For one, it’s the longest track here, but the band’s content to really let the guitars do the work, as they ring in and out of the foreground, battling Cunningham for control of the song.  Then, as a testament that the group’s got a definite affinity for classic punk rock, you find “No Good For You.”  Remember when the Ramones would bang out a nice power ballad, just to mix it up? Well, that encompasses everything great about this song; it’s not just mimicry, however, as there’s definitely a different bit of brashness in the way the group handles themselves–but you’ll definitely notice the homage around the 2 minute mark.

For me, this is perhaps the perfect culmination of everything about my favorite records.  Killing Time definitely has everything modern in its sound, but it harkens back to a purity in the annals of rock n’ roll, tossing out punishing drums lines, excellent hooks and enough creativity that every song sounds fresh.  At just under 35 minutes, you’re going to have a hard time finding an album that begs to be played time and time again without every growing old.  Who loves the Terry Malts? “I do I do I do I do I do I do.”

New Track from Evans the Death

There’s very few labels that have been as dependable as Slumberland Records over the last few years, and they’ve signed yet another wunderkind in Evans the Death.  On April 3rd the band will be releasing their new self-titled album, as well as a single. We’ve got the lead track below to stream, so prepare yourself for an excellent ride. Energy bursts forth from the get-go, and we’ve got a new female lead in Katherine Whitaker.  Her vocals sound sublime backed by the melodious hooks of the rest of the group.  Let’s cheer on Slumberland and their newest signing!

Brand New Power Pop from Gentleman Jesse

For the last couple of years I’ve loved the purveyor of pure power-pop, Gentleman Jesse and his group of merry men from Atlanta.  He’s been working hard at his new record, Leaving Atlanta, which comes out on March 13th via Douchemaster Records.  One of the best things about the group, and this track below, is that the band just gives you straight up rock n’ roll.  There’s no frills, there’s no gags, it’s just an honest-to-god rock song. Still, that’s not always good enough for a lot of people, but those people are wrong, as this song’s got me pumping my fists in the air, tapping my feet on the ground, and ready for the rest of the release. Well played gentlemen.

Brazen Pop Ditty from Tacocat

Yes, the music is as playful as the band name, and that’s not a bad thing at all.  The Seattle quartet, Tacocat, has recently signed on with Hardly Art Records to release the Take Me To Your Dealer EP, which will actually be squeezed into the 7″ format; it will be available to the masses on March 13th, so be ready to pick your limited edition copy up at your local record store.  It’s no surprise that the band has shared the stage with the likes of Best Coast and Vivian Girls, since their sound definitely falls into that category, although you’ll find that this group’s approach is one that’s a bit more polished–void of the extensive atmospheric reverb and distortion.  You’ll like it, promise.

Amazing New Track from So Many Wizards

We first discussed So Many Wizards back in 2011, when the project was just getting started, but I’m happy to report the band has grown and blossomed into something spectacular.  The LA acts is slated to have an album, Warm Nothing, arrive later this year, and if it’s filled with tracks like this, then it’s going to take over the whole Internet.  For me, there’s a resemblance of what you would expect the Shins to sound like if James Mercer still kicked it old school, draping careful melodies across light instrumentation.  Come on, you can’t tell me this track doesn’t make you happy.

Exciting New Jam from La Sera

Sure, I’m a day late on this little jam, but I just couldn’t help myself. It’s hard enough to dislike La Sera and Katy Goodman for her striking beauty, but when she’s rocking such incredible jams as this one, the world is her oyster.  Her newest album, Sees the Light, comes out on March 24th on the most excellent Hardly Art, and it’s shaping up to be quite a delight for all parties involved.  This jam is brief, poppy, and Goodman sounds as confident as ever–as she should be with tracks like this at her disposal. If you haven’t heard this yet, get to it!

More New Music from Cats on Fire!

Cats on Fire have to be my favorite Finnish group, though there have been some great ones of late.  Their first record Our Temperance Movement played on my record player for a solid year, and this new effort All Blackshirts to Me will is shaping up to be one of my favorites in 2012. It’s slated to be released by our friends at Soliti Music and Matinee Recordings, with the overseas release date stated as March 28th. On this new jam, it starts off with just a bit of trickling pop vocals, then it reaches this pinnacle, which honestly has me spinning around my room in absolute glee. Definitely can’t get enough from these guys, can you?
