Marry Cherry Shares New Direction

It’d be very easy for a band in Austin to slide into the traditional psychedelic path, as we’ve had the forefathers and modern torch-bearers, but I love how Marry Cherry never settled for that sound, despite being adjacent to the sound. They’ve been building their sound in a more pop broad sound for the last year or so, and perhaps with “New Direction” we finally get to the pinnacle of their sound. Those of you who love the cavernous worlds of acts like the Jesus and Mary Chain will find the band meeting up at the afterparty, only to venture off and hang with Primal Scream; I love how they’re building in these old school club sounds into their sets. Stoked to see where they go from here.

Tears Run Rings Announce New Album

If you’ve been following the world of modern shoegaze/dreampop in the United States, and you’re one of those nerds who cares about labels (like me), then you definitely know who Shelflife Records is. Did you know that the label founders also have a band, Tears Run Rings? Well, you should, as today’s announcement of a new record is actually their 4th! Our first little tastes gives us the textbook sound, albeit one that allows for plenty of monosyllabic notes to kind of hover as a textured layer. That’s their area of expertise too, as they create this majesty of layers, using their musical arsenal to build this audial landscape that you an hear in 3D. But, be sure to stick through the whole of the tune as they take several opportunities to bliss out that powerful sound. Everything in the End is out on September 6th.

Hattara Share Uimaan Single

If you dabble in visiting this site, hopefully you’re aware of our appreciation for the world of Finnish pop music, mostly due to our long-running friendship with Soliti Records. Today, however, we bring you an act not associated with the label, but certainly a swoon worthy piece of pop from Hattara. Akin to many a dreampop act in the States, the song kind of dangled these little pieces of sparkling guitar glass in the background while the drums offer up a steady groove to kind of give the track just enough pace to illustrate movement. Vocals come in just as you’d want in this setting, offering up that rustling wind effect, allowing the song to sort of billow and move as each note blows through your speakers. Really appreciated the noisy bite at the end.

Last Week’s Jams (7.8 – 7.12)

After a brief vacation, I apparently over-indulged while RayRay was out on the town, hitting up nearly 30+ songs, and some of those, like the premiere we ran for legendary Refrigerator, aren’t even on streaming platforms, so you have to go find em’ on the site! Austin had a big week, with acts like Club Coma, Liz Burrito, Voxtrot, Font and Letting Up Despite Great Faults throwing out some new jams. But, don’t think San Francisco/Oakland were game for being overshadowed, with Tony Jay, Sad Eyed Beatniks, Chime School, Fake Fruit and Parallel all dropping new jams. So, this is nearly 2 hours of really really great music, so sit back, press play, and escape the madness, albeit for a brief moment.

Friday Album Releases: Sad Eyed Beatniks, Font and More

It’s not one of those overwhelmingly crazy Fridays where I feel like I could spend a million dollars buying records, but there’s definitely some notable releases I wanted to remind you of today, several of which we’ve been repping over the last several months, like our ATH faves, Font. No need to get poetic, as your job is to jam out and find what you love, then go support the artists…so without further adieu.

Club Coma Shares Changing the Rules

Our friends in Austin’s Club Coma haven’t stopped crafting music following their self-titled LP from last year; they’ve continued to take their approach to deconstructive pop even further. On this fresh single, they work for over a minute taking these appeasing elements of modern pop and twisting them into a blend of twisted noise and metal, setting the tone for the synthetic groove to drop right in underneath as they drive their pop sensibility into the listener’s ears. They’ll blend both elements of noise and pop into the single as it continues, continuing to see them taking apart pop music and building it up in their own image. And, if you’re in the ATX, they celebrate the single’s release tonight at Cheer Up Charlies with TC Superstar and more!

Alek Barkats Shares Hologram Single

Dwelling in pop territory for a bit too long this morning (not that that’s bad!), so wanted to twist a bit and turn over towards Alek Barkats, who lives in this desert between the cities of David Berman and Bill Callahan. Like those artists, Barkats has a playful way of spinning the wheel of lyricism, operating as a sort of narrative bard, weaving poetic stories into his brand of indie rock. Musically, you’re going to find the style working with a slight toe-tap, but the arrangements are what really bring the song to life, swelling and soaring with these tinkering piano pieces and sweeping textures that swell and crash in the chorus. If you dig on this, be sure to give Here We Are in the Garden a listen when it drops next week.

Music for Listeners Announce 25th Anniversary Shows

If you ever make it to Austin during the SXSW season, you’ve likely been to a set or played a set at the wonderful Music for Listeners day parties. Michael and Orlando have exceptional taste, quite closely aligned to our own, and they work really hard throughout the year to promote their favorite new and old music on their radio show based out of San Antonio; you can stream a lot of their sets HERE. First, congrats to the two of them for 25 years of rocking their radio show; that’s just a magnificent feat in any arena. Second, they’ve announced two really great 25th anniversary shows, one which will feature Voxtrot playing a set of their original 3 EPS, with Blushing and Buttercup opening. The second set will have a more country leaning attitude with Cactus Lee, Native Harrow and Sentimental Family Band taking over. First show is September 14th at Laurie Auditorium and second is on October 5th at Lonesome Rose. And why not celebrate by sharing a new video from Voxtrot! Congrats Michael and Orlando!

The Softies Share California Highway 99

This beautiful new track from the Softies ran yesterday afternoon at all the cool spots, but admittedly, I generally only work between 8-10 am CST, so I missed it. But, like all of you, I’ve been over the moon to hear that the Softies are returning to recorded material with their new album, The Bed I Made. They’ve shared this charming video created by Katie Marks, who said the video was meant to capture the duo’s “friendship beyond the music.” I’m just reveling in their rare ability to draw a fickle listener like me completely into a tune without evening adding conventional percussion. All your friends are going to buy the record from Father/Daughter when it drops on August 23rd.

Mt Misery Return with Lunch Break

If you didn’t get into Mt. Misery back when they dropped the phenomenal Once Home No Longer, then now is your perfect chance to dive headfirst into one of the great pop acts from the UK. Today, they’re dropping a brand new single as they prepare for a brief UK tour with Lightheaded (Slumberland). Immediately, the brightness of the guitars peek through like the sun creeping through the slits in your windowpanes. There’s a steady bounce that adds a certain snappiness that’s adds a bit of a hook factor, though they’re careful not to overindulge in the sweetness. To be fair, it does have some nostalgic feels, akin to the Lucksmiths, with just a bit more boogie to it. Such a joy to hear the band back at it, and hopefully this tour gets them excited to record more!
