Fake Fruit Release Cause of Death Video

Another day, another great track coming out of the Oakland area, this time from Fake Fruit. The band are totally fucking with you here too, playing with your favorite post-punk tropes to suck you right into their world. At first you get those angular guitars (think Omni) branded with a pseudo-spoken word vocal display. Just as you think they’re ready to jettison off into stereotypical fun, they break it down real slowly and noise, hitting you with a wash of heavily distorted guitars and squawking horns, but pulled back so it rolls in like a dense fog. If you get sucked in, as you should, then wait for the burst of pop vocals from Hannah right at the 2:20 mark. What a great second single; they release Mucho Mistrust on August 23rd via Carpark Records.

Three Quarter Skies Drops New Single

If you haven’t heard of Three Quarter Skies, but consider yourself a Slowdive fan, well, this is drummer Simon Scott’s new project. Today they’ve shared the latest single, and it’s the perfect vibe to just lose yourself inside, if that’s your sort of thing. There’s this slowly ebbing wall of atmosphere that builds for the first minute (plus), anchored by a stark percussive element; you can almost see the melding of sounds and colors before you as the tune plays. When the vocals come into the picture, they take on this sort of shadowy quality, which can be a bit disorienting; it does feel as if it moves with the shifts that coincide with the track itself. Pop Filter Share Life Downstream

After releasing last year’s Cono, I’ll be honest and admit that I didn’t expect to hear back from Pop Filter so soon. Every member of the group has various projects constantly in the works, so it’s great to see them back with a brand new single so soon. This go round, the band are locked into a steady groove that plays off light jangling guitar licks and a wobbling bit of keys that hang in the background. You’ll find the group playing with a bit more bite too, and you can hear the first glimpse when there’s a punching six seconds of guitar around the 1 minute mark; it sets you up for a full on rock n’ roll freakout that closes the track out. The Male Gays Release Be Kind Single

Today the world gets to meet the Male Gays, though in all likelihood, you’ve heard from the two members before. The new cross-continental project is the work of Guy Blackman (owner of Chapter Music) and Bart McDonagh (of Amour Foo/Domino Records). Their very first single is this enchanting number below, almost like a lounge version of Magnetic Fields; there are deep tones on the vocal end, and it feels as if it’s been crafted on your older sisters keyboard; I loved the sort of heart-on-the sleeve sincerity too. The messaging on this go round is all about kindness, which seems like a simple concept, though it’s one that’s becoming increasingly less common. On their three song EP, they’ll offer up other thematic references “rejecting queer cynicism, the need to rid the world of white boys wielding guitars (which includes themselves, naturally) and the difference between being outpunk and being an actual punk.” The single will drop on August 2nd via both Chapter and Amour Foo.

Golomb Announce Love + Share Take My Life

If, like me, Golomb wasn’t already on your list of acts to keep an ear out for, then, like me, you’ve made a grave mistake. This past week the band just announced their brand new Love EP, and with that, they’ve shared a thundering new single and video to capture your ear. They set the tune up with warbling and whaling guitar, set up to screech on the back of this harrowing beat that sounds like your neighbor pounding on your wall to get you to turn that noise down! As the rhythm section thunders away, the guitar takes its own route, locking in step at moments, ripping its own path at other turns. While the formula seems simplistic, its the execution and the band’s willingness to kind of forged its own destructive path from within that really makes you thirsty for more. The Love EP is out this Friday!

Slipper Share Sacred Contradictions

One would think that the foggy pop sounds of the Bay Area was sort of an ownership agreement between bands and the city, but it looks like the formula has made its way over to Berlin where Slipper are offering up an excellent rendition of the sound. There’s a weeping melody in the guitar sound almost instantly, setting up the tones as the guitar strums along here. The vocals carry this feel of being lost between two worlds, one angelic and one more troubling. They do offer a bit of growl to their guitar sound at times, taking the sound and mixing it up and making sounds entirely their own. They’ll release A Tiny Rose Made Out of Clay on June 21 via Rehberge Records.

Sasha Bolof Shares Tabitha Singles

Do you ever find yourself completely sucked into a song by the opening tones alone? This is precisely what I expect when you press play on the latest single from Sasha Bolof; the LA songwriter formerly working as Stres has just announced her new album, Tabitha, but working with her own name this go round. There are some interesting bits working throughout this song that will continue to keep your focus, such as the way the forceful guitar walls erupt from beneath the light-natured strum that meets you in the opening. At times, the vocals feel like multiple layers, which can be disorienting, if they didn’t fit so well within the confines of the track itself. Little bit of noise, whole lot of melody, and all of it hits on August 9th via Crusin Records.

Melenas Announce Ahora Remixes EP

I was a huge fan of the latest LP from Melenas, Ahora, so I was as equally as excited to hear what other artists would do to their work when they announced the Ahora Remixes EP. While the folks like Tim from Stereolab and Peanut Butter Wolf, our first listen has Spanish outfit Hidrogenesse working with “K2.” Instead of the rolling pulse that worked through the original track, this remix version takes the vocal work and layers it atop what’s a more spirited bit of electronics; the beats have more of a thump, with the tiniest percussive glitches springing the tune into life at the get-go. Different way to run with the group’s sound; look for the EP via Trouble in Mind Records on July 5th.

Immersion Share I’m Barely Here Video

Colin Newman and Malka Spigel need little introduction, but there Immersion project has enlisted Penelope Isles’ Jack Wolter (aka Cubzoa) for their latest single here. It begins simply, using this mystical cymbal work to establish some atmosphere, then begins to build. Casually, there’s a propulsive groove that slides into the frame, setting the mood for the vocals. Those vocal notes are almost like ghostly whispers, hanging in the balance between the constant tapping of cymbals and all the other nuanced notes that fill the space in your room. It’s a striking exercise in patience, letting the movement seep through your speakers, drawing you towards whatever noise your ears hear first. This is the final single before their new album, Nanocluster: Vol 2 drops this Friday.

WUT Announce Mingling with Thorns

When your band’s resume features members of Knife Pleats and Tough Age (plus an appearance from Christina of Artsick), you already come to our ATH table with built in clout. WUT is the band, and they’re not messing around as they announce their new record, Mingling with Thorns for the masses; it’ll be out later Summer via HHBTM Records. Today, we offer up this rolling bit of jangling pop, and almost from the first falling vocal I was floored; the line “sea of green/empty screen/I’m waiting/Now I know has this beautiful voice that just drops the tone, sucker-punching you with charm…a feat they continue to utilize throughout. But, this track’s not about a singular moment or mere vocal treats; take a listen to the buoyant bop right at the 33 second mark, twisting the song with just the slightest wrinkle. Within the lyrical confines, you’ll find the band questioning the patriarchy and capitalism, reflecting and wondering where one finds their way in such antiquated systems. For now, the only way you need to go is towards the band’s site and pre-order a copy of Mingling with Thorns; it drops August 28th via HHBTM.
