If there was a song that encompassed the live energy and personality of Being Dead, think that their latest single is perfect. Imagine watching the band as the song begins with a bit of almost teasing with the audience, like they’re warming up here. Soon, they drop into the song, rolling drums and delivering a powerful chant of “you killed them.” But, like they do in the live setting, they switch into a different gear, letting the hook come at a buffalo’s gallop, building in layered melodies from their vocal work. Then, as if the show’s wrapping up, the song evolves into cacophony; it’s an entire show in one quick 3 minute blast! The group release When Horses Would Run on July 14th via Bayonet.

The Illness Share Single and new AI Video

I have a feeling many of you are like me, completely unaware that Bob Nastanovich and Steve West (of Pavement fame) have gone out as the Illness to craft an entirely different breed of music. They’ve got the Summerase EP coming out next week via Sea Records, and this is the first track to tease us just a little bit. You can lock into Bob and Steve’s grooves, just as you would in the old days, but here you get these vocal lines overlapping, creating this sort of spaced out disorientation, immediately locking you into the visual journey created to accompany the video. Speaking of that video, it’s entirely AI created, so not only do you get the duo pushing into new musical horizons, but their choice of video also sees them trying out new things. Sonny and the Sunsets Announce Self Awareness Through Macrame

Another bit of great news from one of my favorite songwriters, Sonny Smith. Sonny wrote a majority of the songs, like the one below during the pandemic, then went back and added in friends and touches to make it a proper Sonny and the Sunsets record. I love the light-hearted guitar jangle that bounces throughout this tune, giving off a ray of sunshine and bounce that’s immediately accessible to any old pop fan. Plus, you get some great organ work that adds an extra textural layer of depth to the song, building in extra bits of charm. Self Awareness Through Macrame will be out on September 1st via Rocks In Your Head Records.

Private Lives Prep Hit Record; Share Trust in Me

Those of you that are itching for some great classic punk rock style riffs are going to really enjoy this new track from the forthcoming Private Lives LP. While the attitude and flair come in from those heavy riffs and smashing drum bits, there’s this howling hook coming from Jackie Blenkharn’s vocal portrayal. Her voice snakes around those riffs and drum hits, almost giving the song this natural movement that should definitely rile up listeners when the band takes the stage. This former quarantine project is stepping into the limelight, ready to take pop rock fans by storm when they drop Hit Record, out July 14th from Feel It Records.

New Devendra Banhart Drops

I know my wife and I both have a soft spot for Devendra Banhart; we used to spend hours just cleaning our house (pre-kids) soaking in the airy notes from his warbled voice. Now he has a new LP on the way, and well, it’s going to take a few folks back, which I totally respect. I mean, how many more times can Banhart write in the same place? This go round, it looks like he’s teamed up with the glorious powers of Cate Le Bon to build the tracks for Flying Wig. Our first listen has him living in this post-punk meets 80s radio-croon, almost as if he’s channeling some Bowie bits; it’s an interesting left turn that I didn’t expect, so I’m actually here for it, as the kids say. Flying Wig is out September 22nd via Mexican Summer.

 

Allah-Las Share the Stuff

What is the stuff you ask? To be frank, I don’t quite know what “the stuff” is, but I do know that this cock-sure brood from Allah-Las offers a glimpse at a newer sound for the group. They’re still employing a sound heavy on the work of the riffs, though here, they’re sort of steadied and almost marching to the beat running below. You can’t deny that the band still have the effortless cool locked in here, though it’s nice to see them get one foot out of the pigeonholed psych category. This single comes with the announcement of Zuma 85, their new LP for Innovative Leisure, coming your way on October 13th.

Kindsight Share Tibet Singles

Kindsight combine elements of nostalgic indiepop sounds with the fuzziness of the current climate that’s overtaken Scandinavia, and the greater world. But, following the success of their Swedish Punk LP, the band have slowly been expanding their sound with a batch of new singles. I was immediately enamored by the back and forth between the vocal parts of this song, toying with the listeners willingness to indulge in the band’s joyous nature. Still, there are two punch elements that course through this song, dropping in elements of noise and a more furious indiepop sound that adds that grit, illustrating just how far the band are willing to go. This song brought to us courtesy of Rama Lama Records.

The Parade Share I’m a Dreamer Single

Something purely nostalgic is dripping from the first single from Sweden’s The Parade; it feels like a pop track that would have quietly slid into 90s college radio, only to then be consumed and adored by the masses. Velvety vocals work over synth stabs and electric beats that bob and groove, getting your body slight swinging as you soak in the sunny goodness. It’s the first thing we’re hearing from the band, but it arrives with the sort of sophistication you’d hear on heralded Swedish label, Labrador. Smart and sweet, you’re going to love The Parade.

Softie Share Gauzy Single

I have no idea whether anyone has coined the term fog-gaze or not, but I feel like Oakland’s Softie would certainly encompass the moniker, if we were to use it. For me, the sound has this weighted mass that just creeps through the speakers and into the corners of your room as you listen. All the vocals feel like ghostly whispers, like echoes from a distance you can’t quite make out as you fall under the spell of the warbling melody riding through your speakers. Definitely a sound that should have you listening in really closely, and with fingers crossed, we’re hoping we’ll get a new EP. Track brought to you courtesy of Cherub Dream Records.

Last Week’s Jams (6.5 – 6.9)

When summer hits, there seems to be an infinite amount of music bouncing about these parts, particularly in the Austin scene, as we saw this last week. We had new album announcements from A Giant Dog and Jordan Moser, new singles from Cast of Thousands, Marry Cherry and Genuine Leather; BLK ODYYSY also dropped an album. But, there was still plenty of music outside of Austin we loved, like new stuff from Gaadge, Wombo and Your Heart Breaks. Tons of music to absorb below, so feel free to indulge in all stuff you might have missed.
