Far Caspian Announces The Last Remaining Light

When we caught Far Caspian during SXSW I wasn’t quite sure what to make of the set; I felt like I had pigeonholed Joel Johnston in that sort of post-dream pop realm. But, in that set, I got a glimpse of what was in the works with the Last Remaining Light, definitely leaving a lasting impression on me. This new single works on multiple levels, at times merging math-y tendencies with those dreamy moves, although the nature of Johnston’s voice leaves you with an element of the pastoral. It’s like the world somehow found the next Gravenhurst then forced them to become the next Pinback, and if that makes sense, you’ll totally get why I love this track. The Last Remaining Light is out July 14th.

Vanity Mirror Share Dandelion Wish

Listening to Vanity Mirror is like taking a step into a magical time machine; you get transported to a period of pop songwriting that seems to rooted in late 60s style, albeit with a modern approach to recording and arrangements. In that approach, the duo seem to have created this purified pop that seems indifferent to the stylistic flare across the cool-kid Spotify playlist. Personally, there are certain moments in the song’s sonic changes that made me absolutely swoon, like the switch in vibe that hits at the 1:13 mark of the song. Having recently announced their debut, Puff, you can expect more classic pop from the group on May 12th.

Mo Troper Drops Another Pop Nugget: Stream For You to Sing

We’re barely removed from the release of MTV in the Fall of last year, but Mo Troper never seems to slow-down, and why would he? His latest effort has this intertwining bit of guitar weaving this quilt of glam, lo fi and crunchy indie rock; it’s almost a stomper, with tons of classic guitar flare hitting the high notes. Mo’s distinctive voice shines brightly from the textured mix of rock n’ roll, like a beacon of light guiding you along the path of rock n’ roll pleasure. Word on the street is this tune will feature on Mo’s next great record; it’s going to great. Track available courtesy of Lame-O Records.

Greg Mendez Releases Two New Singles: Best Behavior + Hope You’re Doing Okay

It seems like there are a lot of folks out there falling in love with Greg Mendez, and with these latest singles hitting today, I imagine there will be more folks digging through Mendez work. Honestly, as a blogger for the last 15 years or so, I’ve admittedly used the Elliott Smith comparison a lot, but in these two songs, the album’s final two tracks, I feel as if we’re as close as we might ever get to finding another voice so meaningful. There’s this fragility in Greg’s voice, something that just lets his words hang effortlessly in the air, waiting to find a person who needs the comfort his voice will offer. All of this is layered carefully atop a light strum, giving off that intimacy that makes you feel as if you’re in on the secret. Greg Mendez, the album, will be out on May 5th via Forged Artifacts/Devil Town Tapes.

Lunar Isles Release Right Way Round LP

I have been enjoying the latest release to come from Lunar Isles, the recording project of David Skimming, a Scot living in South Korea. There’s something in his vocal work throughout the brand new LP that really feels like he’s channeling a bit of that Eastern mysticism; there’s this natural sense of calm, particularly when you zoom in to the opening track on Right Way Round. Those guitar notes and the rhythm section keep this bounce, but you still feel as if there’s a bit of thoughtfulness coursing through the core, something that ultimately feels effortless and centered…the way the whole of this listen comes across. If you dig, spin Right Way Round today!

Generifus Readies Rearrangel, Shares Glass House

I feel like it may have been a minute since we got a full release from Spencer Sult’s project, Generifus; it looks like that’s all about to change with the announcement of Rearrangel, a brand new collection of tunes. I’m totally in love with the guitar sound here, particularly in the way the notes seem to sort of climb their way down a steep set of steps on a ladder; it gives the song this sort of pastoral feel, something that almost feels like its been farmed from the grounds of Olympia (Sult’s home). Big fan of this one, so keep an eye out for Rearrangel, out June 2nd via Anything Bagel/Bud Tapes.

Airhockey Drop Always Late Single

Felt like I wanted to kickstart this week with a bit of energy, so it’s perfect that there’s an excellent new track from Florida’s Airhockey. The band employ those swirling jangle notes, almost dancing through the mix in unison with the snappy drum beat that serves as the cores of the track. When you hit the vocals, it feels like you’ve just been coated in the warmest, fuzziest down, balancing out the song’s energy by keeping this dynamism in the song’s presentation. The group have been dropping singles pretty consistently this year, so perhaps there’s a longer effort hanging just on the horizon…but if not, let’s just keep rocking these bouncing singles!

Last Week’s Jams (4.10 – 4.14)

Looking back at last week, there was tons of really great stuff out there, and admittedly, there are a few things we just didn’t have time to get to on our end. But, stoked for Austin, as there was great new music from Being Dead, Transy Warhol, Holy Wire and new project Feeling Small. My favorite track from the most recent Blues Laywer LP got a video treatment, so I had to have that one out. RayRay covered that huge banger from Night Beats, who will be in town for Psych Fest. And, one of my favorite SXSW acts Snooper announced their new LP too, so you get a bunch of winning hits!

Sumos Drop New Single: Small Talk

Yesterday we were treating you to the electronic excursion of Manchester’s Orielles, but today, we’re going to the city’s softer pop side with a fresh single from Sumos. When the guitar notes pushed through my speakers at the start, I already began to swoon; this is the brand of indiepop that offers those crisp jangles and soothing vocals. The hook of this song works between the juxtaposition of two guitar styles, with one being sharp and angular while the other works in a more distorted manner, so it all feels sunny with a chance of thunderstorms…but like the weather in Austin, it quickly fades into more sunshine. Strap in, put on your shades and enjoy the warmth of Spring. Sumos will drop Surfacing on May 12th via Meritorio and Safe Suburban Home.

Your Heart Breaks Share Single ft. John K Samson and Christine Fellows

You know you are hitting all the right notes when you can get John K Samson and Christine Fellows to lend you their voice; such is the case of the latest single from the forthcoming Your Heart Breaks LP. I love the concept of the whole album, which culls influences and stories from Clyde Peteresen’s life, with some friends from around the world showing up to lend a hand in leaving their secrets on The Wrack Line. Something in this tune feels really special, and perhaps even a little old school in terms of the storytelling and the whole approach to the song’s execution; it feels nostalgic, but almost in a fashion that simultaneously is refreshing, as its free of a lot of the modern trappings. The Wrack Line is out via Kill Rock Stars on July 7th.
