Soft Moon Share Become the Lies

It looks like someones been watching me dance-punch all across my house this summer, and it looks like that someone is Soft Moon! The band’s new video for brooding bouncer “Become the Lies” is filled with a lone dancing machine, dancing primally to the thumping beat that’s beneath the song. What I’m interested in from the musical side is how the song manages to avoid the trappings, brining in an angelic vocal where most folks would pummel you with a wall of noise. Don’t get me wrong, you can feel the weight of this song shattering the cones of your speakers, but the melodic nature still seems to supersede. Exister will be out on September 2rd via Sacred Bones Records.

Wilder Maker Share Static ft. VV Lightbody

Everyone needs a crunchy indie rock tune in their day, and you’re not going to find a better one than this new Wilder Maker track, featuring V.V. Lightbody on lead vocals. On my first few listens, the song has this sort of nostalgic rock vibe, like an updated version on what attracted us to Fleetwood Mac. As the tune moves on, there’s this understated little band from the riffs, channeling good old classic indie rock vibes…the sort that get your feet stomping and your hands clapping. V.V. Lightbody’s performance is perfect for the track too; they add in this sort of smokiness that’s brimming with confidence. I love when the vocals and the drum seem to kind of snap into place together, picking up the energetic tick just a bit, at least in my old ears. Male Models will be out next week via Western Vinyl.

Twain Announces Noon

When Twain released “King of Fools” this past Winter, our contacts at Keeled Scales assured us there was a new LP on the horizon…and today we get to hear another single with news that the release is official! There’s something special brewing in these songs offering that sort of intimacy that permeates the soul. Still, there’s such depth and texture to what Mat Davidson is doing that you can’t help but to imagine this as the perfect soundtrack to any documentary on Americana. Really looking forward to hearing the entirety of this listen come the October release date, just in time for fireside listens. Noon is out 10.7 via Keeled Scales.

Free Time Announce Jangle Jargon

We haven’t heard from Free Time in quite some time, but Dion Nania’s band returns with one of my favorite tracks of recent weeks right here, along with the announcement of Jangle Jargon. Rushing in with those jangling guitars doesn’t ever do any harm, and I love how some of the notes jet off into their own little mini-solos, adding some bounce to the tune here and there. The vocals hold onto this cool indifference, and somehow Dion feels like he’s channeling an Australian Dan Treacy. One of the great things about this tune, however, is the musicianship is on full display, with plenty of moments where they band just let it rip, vocal free, yet still keeping the vibe going. If you dig, Jangle Jargon is out September 30th via Bedroom Suck.

Laura Jean Announces Amateurs

We’ve gone about five years since hearing from Australia’s Laura Jean, but there’s news of a new LP titled Amateurs, and with it, comes this huge song that I just want on repeat throughout the rest of the day. This new single is just absolutely brilliant, even getting a little help from Aldous Harding and Marlon Williams on backing vocals. For starters, the guitars on this song are so rad; you get a darker guitar dueling with this strummed jangle, fitting them perfectly like a tasty PB&J. Still, the vocal performance throughout is just spot on; there are moments when the vocal texturing is so sublime that you might not spin anything else for the rest of the day. Amateurs will be out via Chapter Music in November!

Human Barbie Share No Worries

When I pressed play on this new Human Barbie jam, I was immediately hooked. There’s something about the vibe that feels like a weighted blanket, comforting and heavy, in a sense. Then the vocals come in and offer this quieted whisper, stretching a hand out to the listener to pull them deep into the track. Fill the track with a little instrumental moment of shoegazing and you’ve got this nice little dreamy summer jam to get lost inside. If you’re into it, the song will appear on a brand new EP that’s slated for an October release, courtesy of the folks at Poor Man Records.

First Names Drop Coconut Oil

Austin’s First Names are a group we’ve been keeping our eyes on the last few years, and they’ve just dropped this delicious new single that I’m totally digging. There’s this heavy psych wall that sets the mood, but its soon peeled back to reveal the melodic guitar shuffling that rides throughout the verses. Honestly, one of my favorite pieces about this number is the high-pitched vocal work; it reminds me of our friends in Colourmusic, stretching the boundaries of what we deem as perfectly melodic. And just in case you missed those heavy riffs from the opening, they splice them in and out of the song, working with this huge wall of fuzz to balance the whole jam. Dig it.

Last Week’s Jams, Today (7.11 – 7.15)

Was a bit of a hectic week, as I was out of town for a good part of last week, so RayRay helmed things solo, keeping you up to date with new jams from The Berries and Sorry. I crept in towards the end of the week with recent favorites like Key Out and Scarves, but I was most excited to hear new music from Bubblegum Lemonade hitting the airwaves! Oh! And a brand new album out of the blue from Neil Brogan! I mean, it was a short week coverage-wise, but some surefire jams to listen to in here.

Bubblegum Lemonade Return with Never Have I Ever EP

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard the charming voice of Laz and his project, Bubblegum Lemonade, but man, what a way to return. I’m immediately drawn to the guitar sound, as I’m sure many of the pop aficionados will be too! Then there’s something really special about the his voice seems to rush into the verses, only to turn into a gentle melody a few syllables later, buoyed by sublime backing vocals. Plus, there’s a nice little mid-tune change around the 1:20 mark that gives a nice little emphatic bit of harmony to the song before dancing its way into a handclap-laden solo. Always love his work; the Never Have I Ever EP is out via Matinee Recordings, with a brand new LP slated to come out later in the year!

Scarves Share Title Track, Delicate Creatures

Scarves are still spitting out catchy indie rock numbers as we head towards the release of Delicate Creatures, and today, we get the band’s title track from that new LP. Lyrically, the song hits on how our lives can change instantaneously in this fragile world, facing our mortality and our constant struggles, with Niko hoping “you make an impact” on the world around you. It’s a bit of hope thrown into the world, but the way the band balance the gentle nature and fragility in both lyrical content and musical vibes is perfect; they erupt when you least expect it, bursting forth with emotion in a split instant, then settle. Walking the tightrope between lyrics and sound is a true gift, so untie the bow and enjoy this new single from their Delicate Creatures record, out August 26th.
