Fake Palms Share Sattelite Video

Once the angular flirtation comes through, Fake Palms begin to toy with dueling guitar lines; they both operate in a similar fashion, though they’re unfolding feels like its call and response, setting up the anxiousness of the tune. That’s until you hit the 1:07 mark, and suddenly the melodic underbelly is unfurled in your ears, peeling back the sharpness for just a minute. Of course, the song quickly races back into its more spastic nature, shifting from one ear to the other with angular riffs and tight cymbal work. It’s a welcome return for the group, who with it, announce their new LP, Lemons, which hits in the fall via Hand Drawn Dracula.

Joyeria Signs with Speedy Wunderground

Speedy Wunderground is always pushing really great music our way, so it should be no surprise that the label have picked up Joyeria. I can’t stop playing the band’s latest single to go along with the announcement. Just imagine the wordplay and tonal qualities of David Berman, but maybe its spun with a bit more of a kind of fuzz rock attitude. The verses hold the stability, setting up the chorus for this hook-laden exuberance where things get a little outlandish. This band’s already won me over with their sound, so here’s to hoping we find out more about an album in the very near future.

Booter Releases Crushin Single

While Alannah Walker should be familiar for their her role in the Cannon Bros, Booter is her new project, and this is the band’s first official single! To me, it reminds me of the recent success of acts like Weakened Friends or the like, bringing rambunctious pop rock to the masses with a distinctive voice. Here, the voice doesn’t just relate to the sonic qualities, but also Walker’s own narrative voice as she’s found comfort in other queer artists sharing their personal stories through their lyrics. In the end, it’s catchy as hell, and one can only hope we hear more from Booter sooner rather than later.

Erie Choir Preps Bad Tsars Was a Drag

Erie Choir began as the solo-project of Eric Roehrig, at the time as a side-project from his other band Sorry About Dresden. Throughout, Eric’s drop an album here, an EP there, followed up with another LP, and at times, thrown a track here and there for benefits and compilations. But, in just over a week, Erie Choir will be releasing a 25 track collection of rarities and obscure tunes (not to mention a few rad covers) that fans have been clamoring to see put into one official release. Even better, Eric’s been kind enough to drop one of the more obscure tracks in our lap, so we could share it with you. At times, you can hear a more rocking version of the Walkmen, with Roehrig’s pipes positioning themselves right along Hamilton. Still, there’s this sort of haphazard nature to it, something that has made his work so endearing for the last 20 or so years. Bad Tsars Was a Drag will officially be streaming on June 10th via Potluck Foundation.

The Umbrellas Return with New 7″

A little less than a year after their stunning debut, San Francisco’s The Umbrellas return with a bopping new tune, and a new 7″ to get in your collection. What I love about this new track is that you can trace the breadcrumbs back to the self-titled LP, but the sound feels sonically, well, different. The sharp jangles are a little less present, changed in favor of a fuzzier blast of guitar work, pushed forth with a little bit more rhythmic urgency. Still, the band don’t stray too far from the playful melodic harmonies, which is where you can hear the ties to their earlier work; it fills the stomping interlude as guitars scream behind it! The new 7″ is out on June 24th via Slumberland Records.

Florist Release Sci-fi Silence Video

This new Florist record is really shaping up to be something quite special, and this single below might be one of the most striking track on the LP. Still, like the title of the song suggests, this track is all about letting that silence operate in between the careful guitar work and Emily Sprague’s voice. Little delicate tinkerings rise and fall in the midst of the tune, tying into the thematic origin, where Sprague talks about “mystical forces that attract us to one another and the spaces in-between words that can hold profound communications.” I love the way the arrangement builds around the 4 minute mark, cementing this track as an absolute classic. Florist is out on July 29th via Double Double Whammy.

New Arp Visualizer for Eniko Single

Got a little heavy on the guitar pop sounds this morning, so wanted to make sure I’m mixing it up a bit here, especially since I’m really enjoying all the new stuff from the latest Arp LP. I love how beneath the front of the mix is this heavier, almost 80s industrial beat complex; it sets up the perfect contrast between the hyper happy moments that dominate the front of the track. Even as you’re enjoying the wash there, the song mixes in some little glitches, some sonic bursts, blurring the lines between both levels and building this reflective bit of electronica. New Pleasures will be out on July 15th via Mexican Summer, and this song will be on it!

Wy Continue to Grow with High Score

If you missed last year’s Marriage LP, then perhaps we haven’t done our part to turn you on to Wy, at least not properly. But, they’ve got a new EP on the way, and it continues to show how incredibly quickly they’ve broadened their sound, hitting on all the high notes we’d expect and then some. When the tune opens, it has this almost nostalgic pop lean to it, though enhanced by this heavy resonance that sets up Ebba’s vocal entry. She’s got this faint little quiver that toys with you, but as the track unfolds you see just how powerful her voice is, dominating the front of the mix. Still, careful ears will hear just how much effort was put into everything behind Ebba, with all sort of varying textures, balancing noisy bits with melodic ringing notes; it’s pop craftsmanship at its finest. The Something Amazing EP is out June 17th via Rama Lama Records.

BOAT Ready No Plans to Stick the Landing

Not sure what I’m more excited about…a new BOAT LP, or all the incredible folks who helped the band complete the song during the pandemic. You’ve got members of the Feelies, LAKE, Math/Physics Club, Kevin Hairs and Crystal Furs to name a few, so you know the songs will live up to quality expectations…so suffice to say, I’m stoked for both. My basic ears hear hints of early Fountains of Wayne, filling this song in with huge hooks that explode in unison with distorted guitar fuzz; the vocals seem to hang in the air just long enough to burrow into your brain like the best earworms. The opening single rips, and the No Plans to Stick the Landing LP will be out on June 24th via Magic Marker Records.

Trouble in Mind Reissuing Onyon’s Debut

Did you hear Onyon‘s debut EP? Yeah, me either, but that’s the great thing about labels like Trouble in Mind Records, they’re not afraid to reissue a rad record, just so it ends up on your radar for the future. This record’s filled with jittery darkness, with vocals knifing back and forth between English and German, much like the guitars throughout the EP. If you think you’re getting weary of the post-punk attitude, then throw on a tune like “Shining River Utah” that illustrates how far the Leipzig bunch can push this sound. Shout out to TiM for turning all of us onto this rad album; you can hear the whole thing on the band’s page, or wait and grab the cassette from the label now!
