Stream Orange Dots Latest LP, Deflated

Another band from the hotbed of Oakland, Orange Dots, has just released the stellar Deflated LP, and I figured you could find a bit of joy in listening to this collection. The PR describes it as “Aztec Camera songs but reimagined by Robert Wyatt,” which should have all you rushing to click the play button here. Personally, I’m loving “A Lot to Take” as my current standout jam, offering this sort of smoothed out jazzy pop you might expect Edwyn Collins to throw your way. But, perhaps what’s so intriguing about Deflated isn’t the hits, it’s the way Sean McDonnell moves back and forth between different brands of pop offerings; you’re not going to find a single song here that sounds like any of the others’ instead, they’re all naturally linked by Sean’s songwriting expertise. Timeshare Returns with New Yellow EP

In case you haven’t been following Timeshare, it’s the solo project of longtime ATH fave Jordan Thompson, known to our six readers as one of the core members of the Ocean Party/Pop Filter. This week, Jordan announced the Yellow EP, the third in a series of EPs that sees Jordan work his way out of a period where he says he “was drifting.” Like all his cohorts, Jordan’s songwriting has an indie rock drive to it, though spun with a unique penchant for pop music; you can listen to the joyous chorus here and hear the euphoric that hits when he Maddison Newman joins in with backing vocals. I’m a fan of the way the song’s verses have this forceful nature to it, while the chorus seems more akin to exploratory folk rock; it’s a cool little juxtaposition. The Yellow EP is out on May 8th.

Mercvrial Share Look Inside

This track from Mercvurial came through this week, and I’m pretty sure it requires your attention. Listening through, the vocals are heavy, weighing upon the listener, though they stretch with melody as they work their way into the chorus. Musically, the talking points would likely dwell in the post-punk realm, though this track offers quite a bit of brooding too; it’s pace in the verses feels measured, waiting to soar as it hits the refrain “you’ve got to look inside,” smashing through your speakers with an emphatic burst of light. The band release their debut album Brief Algorithms on April 29th via Crafting Room Recordings.

Say Sue Me Drop To Dream Video

I love the sentiment of this new Say Sue Me track, with Sumi saying “I dreamed everyone was alive, and I came to think that there might be no end. One day everyone will come back and meet somewhere.” That feeling sort of pervades throughout the song, as the guitar work slightly dances in the mix, but the track seems to kind of flow back and forth like waters washing ashore during a calm in the sea. Something about it just feels nostalgic and reflective, but when the middle hits and the distorted guitar rips through the tune, it feels like the sun breaks in and shines that light where we all find ourselves as one, somewhere. The group release The Last Thing Left on May 13th via Damnably.

Keeps Share Brand New Single

Years ago, we befriended Tennessee’s Keeps; we even had them play one of our SXSW parties (before we got priced out of fun). So, recently they reached out to let us know they had this delicious new tune we might want to check out. I was hooked immediately, as they employ this shattering guitar wall, woven in the track’s natural melodic fabric, keeping the heavy pop vibe. In the verses, you get something that definitely feels akin to a lot of modern acts, something you might find on a Good Morning or Hovvdy single too. We just really love the way that chorus kind of rides through your speakers, and we hope you’ll feel the same.

Guy Capecelatro III Shares Video for Wake

Since hitting upon Guy Capecelatro III last week, I feel like I stumbled upon a goldmine I didn’t know I needed in my life; I’ve been devouring his back catalogue non-stop since that point. But, as I was being introduced to Guy, he was dropping another track from his next album. This song’s striking, if only for its grand emotive quality while still seeming fairly stripped down to the basics of the craft. There’s a beautiful backing vocal that almost feels like an added instrument at times, joining up with Guy for the chorus. But, other than a light percussive element, the song’s all vocals and strum and power. Heading North Again is out April 29th via Dromedary Records.

Last Week’s Jams, Today (4.11 – 4.15)

Hello there Monday. We’re starting off with a bunch of jams this week that we gladly covered, though admittedly some were pretty obscure, which I’m totally cool with today. The most popular tunes we had out come from a couple of Tims, but we had new music from Ceremony and the Citradels. I was introduced to Guy Capecalatro III last week, and while we wait for his new album to stream, I included an older tune in hopes it finds you looking for new meaningful voices. Sit back, turn it on and let time pas you by.

Rose Mercie Prep Kieres Agua LP

In 2018, Rose Mercie released this beautiful self-titled album with various labels, but namely Austin’s now-defunct Monofonus; it was a brilliant record that would have gotten much more praise had it been more “Americanized.” Well, here we are a few years later and the band have Kieres Agua on wait, and I’ve got this brilliant opening piece here to entice your ears. This track would fit well on a Mexican Summer roster, slowly building over these desert-like guitar riffs, with little adventurous noodles playfully contrasting the sedate nature at the forefront. It’s a bewitching opener from their next LP, which looks to be out at the end of May via Celluloid Lunch and Jelodanti, so here’s to hoping more folks fall for it.

That New Tim Burgress Tune

I generally try to avoid tracks that hit more than 1k streams on the ole YouTube; I just figured there’s another band that needs my small voice. That being said, when two things happened when listening to this track from Tim Burgess; it’s actually just one thing, me and Tim meeting in the middle. As soon as I played the track, I got transported to my youth where I was spending a lot of time with what was coming out of Britain, the Charlatans being among that lot; it was a feeling radiating from the track, something emotionally pulling on me. So, I read the press release and Tim’s quotes as saying “it’s a simple song, and it’s a feeling more than anything.” Me and Tim, tied together by a mutual feeling and a really incredible pop song. Just enjoy it.

Space Daze Delivers Remote View EP

As long time Seapony supporters, we’ve also always been into Danny Rowland’s solo effort, Space Daze. Today we bring you great news that the project has a brand new Remote View EP for you this morning. Listening through to the opening track, it’s clear that Rowland is building layers of guitar atop one another, building texture into the tune to add this moving depth. Still, the guitar work has the focus throughout, which is sort of the personality of the work here, tied to a less dreamy brand than what we might previously have found in his work. Step into Danny’s world and enjoy some fresh Space Daze tracks!
