Lost Tapes Return with Quoting Salter EP

I always love the stuff that Lost Tapes release; they seem to have this knack for crafting just the right brand of melodic pop that lets the mind wonder. With their latest single, I can’t help but think of myself rocking gently in a nice hammock, breezily blowing in the wind as I let my eyes rest and my mind escape the mundane daily rituals. Things seem so clean and perfect in the way the duo work their songs, and in doing so, they create these nuggets of pop joy; it’s like unwrapping your Christmas present early and realizing nothing else in this moment matters. They’ll be releasing the Quoting Salter EP on December 4th via the esteemed Sunday Records.

Permits Share World in Numbers

Been real weird lately, but I feel like the Australian scene is just hitting that sweet spot, and Permits are just another act that feels like they’ve kind of weaseled their way into my soul. I love the sort of garage-y swagger, almost falling off the rails, opening that sets the tone on their latest single. Still, not to be stuck in one direction, they take a left turn right before the 1 minute mark, almost with a little that sort of arrogant assuredness you’d associate with Jarvis Cocker…and suddenly the song opens up into something you never saw coming. It’s a roller coaster of incredible pop sounds, which makes Time Permits a promising release; it’s out on November 26th via Tenth Court.

Yung Announce Ongoing Dispute LP

When Danish outfit Yung dropped A Youthful Dream, folks were salivating; they were much loved pretty much anywhere you went in the indie-sphere. But, five years on, the band are just announcing their new LP, Ongoing Dispute. Taking this long period allowed the group to really invest in their sound, and it seems they’ve expanded upon where they began. There’s a great urgency in the vocals on this lead single, reminiscent of a sort of hyper Win Butler, but it’s the musical element that seems to indicate things feel refreshed. They’ve stripped some of the immediacy, building a sound that seems to resonate atop itself as it pushes forward. Guitars are ringing about with this heavy gunshot drumming propelling things forward, all the while its as if the song is happily chasing its own tail, circling over our ears with this wall of great noise. PNKSLM will issue the new LP on January 22nd.

Kevin Hairs Shares New Tune

There’s good and bad with Bandcamp Friday’s; you get great new tunes from band’s you love, but sometimes you don’t catch them until the day after, so you’re bummed you couldn’t help raise a little funds. But, let’s make up for it by sharing a new tune from our friend Kevin Hairs…so now you can donate to the cause! Influenced by listening to the Microphones, Kevin’s looking back at his own early history as a musician with his project Lil’ Hospital. There’s a heavy coat of guitar fuzz on this tune, letting Kevin stay as the song’s gravitational pull with his vocals, keeping those guitars and minimal beat orbiting behind him. Never a bad day when you start with a Kevin Hairs tune!

Fixtures Share Great New Single from Weak Automatic EP

Brooklyn’s Fixtures are not content to just offer us simple little pop nuggets, at least not if we aim to digest their great new single off the forthcoming Weak Automatic EP. For me, it’s this swirling mixture of all sorts of influences worn right out there on their sleeves. At times, the vocals give the song that hip nod of cool popularized by Lou Reed. But, there’s also this propulsive nature that courses through the tune, somewhere in between krautrock and Broken Social Scene; it feels like the kind of tune that could built to a mass explosion of sweat and euphoria in the live setting. This tune should catch a lot of ears, and if those ears belong to you, be sure to check in on Weak Automatic, released via Bobo Integral on December 4th.

Eggy Share HAL 9000

I’ve been pretty high on Eggy during their release cycle for the forthcoming Bravo!, so we continue our support by giving you a little nod towards their latest single from the LP…the last before the record drops on Friday! This one’s got a little nod to Kubrick, and you can almost feel the famous AI machine in the sort of hobbling synth work that bobs and weaves into the song’s foreground. All that said, this lot are great at building in extemporaneous textures, layering in vocals and a snappy drum beat that gives the song more depth as Hal exclaims “pop culture’s killing me!” Spoilsport Records release the full LP this Friday!

Quality Used Cards Share Ripoff Merchant

Francis Tait has worked in various outfits around Melbourne, but it sounds as if his debut solo record under the moniker of Quality Used Cars might be the one that sort of breaks out into the open. Musical, the song definitely fits into the vibe of the Aussie casual pop, steady and careful, pensive and powerful; you’d be forgiven, too, if you thought you’d heard it before, as the sound has grown increasingly familiar around the world. But, an area that allows Tait to forge his own ground is his vocal delivery. He ends up sounding an awful lot like he’s delivering a sermon about the trials of an employee at his father’s record store…oddly reminds me a bit of Courtney Barnett’s distinctive delivery. Good Days/Bad Days will be out next February via Spoilsport Records.

Dummy Return with EP2

We’ve been super high upon the relatively new LA group, Dummy; we’re continuing that by pointing out that today they release their new EP2. We’ve already offered up “Pool Dizzy” to the masses, which definitely gives a little nod to Stereolab, for all those currently into that sound. I really love the new EP, as it gives a deep view into the band’s influences and musical tastes. Opener “Thursday Morning” is a ringing meditation on pop music, guitar notes bouncing in your ear while the vocals keep your emotions grounded, sedated even. “Mediocre Garden” takes electronic music to adventurous new places, built more as a twinkling soundscape to a world filled with bright lights and warm breezes. Then they close with the brilliant “Prime Mover Unmoved,” which begins in a bit of a dream state before your alarm goes off and your brain starts to buzz with the possibilities of the day. Grab it while you can!

Beautiful New Tune from KO:MI

This wonderful tune from KO:MI has been floating about for a few days, and I’ve been meaning to get it out there, but you know, this week’s been a roller coaster. Alas, its Friday and we should have some clarity over here (fingers crossed!), so it seems that I should try to lift your spirits…and here we are. There’s this entrancing bit that opens the song, before it builds and lifts into this theatrical euphoria; vocals come in and out, but it’s really all about the creative elements intermingling in this cauldron of pop sensibility. If you feel like being swept up today, then by all means, get lost in this track. We Said We Didn’t Know But We Knew, the new album, is out next Friday via Soliti Music.
