STRFKR Share Budapest featuring Shy Boys

What does one do when you’ve crafted a song filled to the brim with harmonies? Well, if you’re STRFKR you call in your label mates Shy Boys and ask them to fill in some of the gaps on your new song. What we get as listeners is this relaxing, almost lounge pop vibe to seduce us into a slight foot shuffle about our bedrooms. In a way, it reminds me of a catchier version of AIR, sort of that French pop attitude, with a touch more focus on brandishing melody for melody’s sake. As of right now, STRFKR keep shuffling out super singles, so perhaps there’s more on the horizon? Keep an eye on their label Polyvinyl for more news.

Gold Cage Share Shadows and Release Social Crutch

Always a fan of the slowcore style, I’m really into this new record from Gold Cage. I love how the song just feels steady, like its serving to give you a semblance of balance amidst the turmoil of your life. Plus, I’m a sucker for those meandering guitar lines snaking their way around my ears, left and right, inside and out, dropping little melodic footnotes along the way. Besides, you get the soft curl of the vocals hanging in the front of the mix, likely to leave you with daydream scars. Gary Olson Announces Solo Debut

Tapete Records is becoming a powerhouse for some of the best indiepop in the world, so it should come as no surprise that they’ve grabbed onto Gary Olson of Ladybug Transistor for his debut solo record. Our first listen has that classic pop vibe, using huge sweeping string accompaniment to add textured layers to the gentle strumming of the guitars. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s this delightful skip of energy around the 2:40 mark, adding a slight boost before riding off into the song’s proverbial sunset. This feels like the perfect way to daydream through the rest of your Friday; look for the record to drop May 29th.

Brother Sports Share Distractions

Let’s start Friday off with a catchy little tune from one of our favorite Austin acts, Brother Sports; you’ve gotta keep it local in times like these, rights? Musically, you’ll find the band offering up a nice blend between the Growlers and the Strokes; it’s all about the sharp stab of the guitar lines to really drive the song’s energy forwards. You’ll find that surfy semi-growl in the vocals, holding tight to some garage rock tendencies while still offering up a healthy dose of pop sensibility. I feel like we all could use some solid distractions in our life, so why not start today with a tune titled “Distractions!”

Trace Mountains Share Me & May

I really enjoyed LVL UP, so it’s nice that we’ve got Dave Benton continuing to write new music under Trace Mountains, though these are decidedly different in their sonic approach. That said, this single seems to reflect the direction of the forthcoming record, Lost in the Country; this is a contemplative track, filled with reflection and nostalgia. I like the subtle strings in the background, and the slight little dose of energy uptick that pops up at 1:35 in the song. This feels like one of those records perfectly suited for isolation and introspection, which means we’ll all surely have some way to connect with this right now. The new record comes out on April 10th via Lame-O Records.

Zachary Vito Shares New Tune

It’s been a minute or two since we last heard from Zachary Vito. Last year, in fact. But, he has found himself stranded in California amidst the current crisis, and what’s an artist to but write a great song. He’s holed up with his new roommate Casey Golden, so they’ve pieced together some footage and offer you this really delicate pop ballad. I love how the guitar sounds solemn and sunny all at once, but mostly I’m in love with Vito’s vocal performance on this one. There’s this warmth and intimacy, it reminds me of singing to my daughter late at night, quietly letting listeners drift into their own headspace. Vito’s calling this a demo, as he hopes to go back and re-recod the tune when times are better for us all…but if you ask me, not much needs to be done here.

RVG Share Christian Neurosurgeon Video

There are tons of great records on the slate for this Spring, but one that’s really high on my personal list is the forthcoming Feral LP from Australia’s RVG. I’ve been raving about the band for years, and they were my favorite SXSW acts two years ago…and now we’ve got a new tune. I was hooked immediately, as this has that sort of muted surf vibe opening into these crisp guitar lines that hop about your earholes. Romy’s vocals have a calming influence on the guitar, with the two elements trading the song’s focus back and forth. Another promising single from a record I’m sure to love; Feral is out on April 24th via Fire Recordings.

Spain Indie Labels Start Music for Gloves

Two things I love, Spanish indie labels, and a really great cause. Over in Spain, a bunch of the independent labels (like Bobo Integral and Meritorio) got together and gathered some rare and new tunes, put them all together, and are now releasing it under the title Music For Gloves. Each label has offered up some rarities in an attempt to raise funds to buy gloves for the hospitals on the frontline of this pandemic. I know we’ve got friends all over the world, so if this is of interest, this a great place to listen to new music and help raise funds. Here’s a new demo from my favorites, El Palacio de Linares.

Why Bonnie Share Athlete

We here in Austin have known about how much you’ll love Why Bonnie for some time, and now that they’ve got a new EP on the horizon, it’s only fair that we hip you all to that too…in case you hadn’t heard. Perhaps my favorite thing about this single is how it illustrates the band’s ability to move between their quieter inclinations to full on raucous moments; it perfectly captures their live force, which isn’t always easy to pull off. I think the song’s fade out also adds a nice little layer, putting the finer details into tune with little odd notes like bending strings and violin accompaniment. Voice Box is out April 10th via Fat Possum Records.

Pharmacy Keys Share Take the Cake

Really been enjoying this track from Cleveland’s Pharmacy Keys, so I why not start off today’s quarantine listening by sharing it with you. It started off with this sort of college rock nod, heavy riffs with underlying melody. But, what really grabbed me was the chorus, and the way the band combine their voices to harmonize, bringing the pop sensibility down upon us; it kind of reminds me to the way Harlem would pull off their gang vocals, only being done here in cool/calm fashion. If you dig what you’re hearing, the band are dropping their album Conjuress today.
