Austin’s Strange Mother have been bopping around for a hot minute, and now we get a glimpse at what’s to come with the band’s latest single, a hint at their forthcoming LP. This short number has these jazzy guitar lines played with indie fashion, while singer Cameron offers up these inter-galactic vocals…which ties into the song’s thematic elements; it sort of feels like he’s composing transmissions to outer space…and if that’s the case then we can totally get behind that vibe! We’re told that Broken Mirror is just around the corner, but if you’re looking for something out of this world, start by checking in on Non Descript Schizo Homo, the last LP…then get ready for this next one!

Listen to Longriver’s Wasting Time

David Longoria has been a longtime fixture in the Austin music scene, so it makes sense that his new project Longriver features folks such as Thor Harris, Sarah La Puerta and Lindsey Verill. This song’s a nice stripped down ballad, but what struck me was the fragility in Longoria’s voice; it’s almost as if it’s accented by the strum of each string, plucked to match his changes in pitch. I like the quieter close of the song too, as if David’s resigned himself to the concept of just ‘wasting time’ writing this song. Trust me, though; he’s not wasting our time; you can grab his debut album, Of Seasons, on September 6th from Hullabaloo Records.

Seazoo Share Throw It Up

We were really fortunate to have Seazoo play for us this past year at our last-minute SXSW party; we were treated to an energetic pop set that was equal parts entertaining and catchy. The band just returned with this fresh single, an early hint at what’s to come from their sophomore LP (which should be out early next year). At first you’ll want to give the whole of this number to the guitars and the vocals; they offer the most obvious hook for a listener. But, what I loved about the band, which is apparent here, are the extra little layers; there’s some nice keyboard/synth marks within this number, backing vocals come in at just the right places and the rhythm section might just be the best part! What I’m meaning to say is that this group is a whole lot of fun, and they’ve got the songs to match! If you haven’t already, please go check out Trunks, while we wait for their next LP!

Another Tune from the Golden Dregs

We’re just over a month away from the release of the next album from the Golden Dregs, thus today warrants another single from the project. I think those of you who have found yourselves fans of Cohen or Waits might find some comfort in the baritone voice of Benjamin Woods, much as I do; it’s got this effortless croon, like only the hippest of lounge acts. For me, the success in this song revolves around the contrast in all the guitar bits; there’s this heavy groove that drives through the track, though its intermittently juxtaposed with this funky guitar line boogieing through the tune. Thus far, this might be my favorite off Hope is for the Hopeless; it drops on September 27th.

New Tune from Stone Jack Jones

Stone Jack Jones has only been in my musical orbit for a few years; I had no idea who he was until our friends at Western Vinyl shared Ancestor (and later Love & Torture) with the world. He’s back with the forthcoming Black Snake, and for some reason, this new single just feels like home. It has the artistry and nostalgia I was raised upon by my parents, though a careful ear will reveal these textural layers that are quite fascinating; I’m quite fond of the way the backing vocals were recorded here. I could probably write an essay about how this melody or that note struck a chord with me, but really, I just want you to partake in this track, maybe you’ll find a bit of yourself inside. If so, Black Snake is out on September 13th via YK Records.

Mimico Offer New Haze

I often steer clear of the six minute song, at least when it comes to posting things on the site; some folks just don’t have the patience these days to indulge in what’s around them. But, this Mimico tune caught my ear the moment I heard it. While they’re psychedelic tendencies definitely unfold as the song traverses the galaxies, the core musical elements offer up this bopping bounce of dream pop that I can’t help but to encourage you to indulge…just a bit. This exploratory pop tune features on the band’s new album, Hi Action, out in October via Hand Drawn Dracula.

Hearts and Rockets Share Drama Club

You thought I’d only throw two Aussie tracks at you today? Wrong! I’ve got this brand new single from Hearts and Rockets, which is the latest single from the band’s forthcoming Power LP! I think the band’s personal description of crafting ‘brat-wave’ is the most fitting genre, especially when you give this tune a spin; Kalindy has this sharp snarl that’s packed with attitude and energy…the sort Karen O brought to the table in the early YYYs EPs. It all feels like synth-y post-punk, with an execution that carries built in charm and hooks; I love the bass groove that operates as the track’s backbone. Anyways…kick off the end of your day with some great attitude; Power comes out on August 23rd!

The Wedding Present Announce Tommy 30

While I’m partial to George Best due to its Manchester United association, Tommy isn’t far behind on my list of great albums by The Wedding Present. News recently broke that after celebrating George Best at 30 the band have gone back to rerecord Tommy to celebrate its 30th birthday. In the tune below, you can hear the impact of the rerecording and how it changes the sounds for Tommy. For starters, things were fast and furious on the original 7″ for “Go Out and Get Em Boy”, and the vocals seemed hidden in the mix. The reimagining has things open up with the guitar sound much more crisp, which in the end, opens up space for David Gedge to show just how far he’s grown as a vocalist…talk about aging like a fine fine wine.

Indigo Bunting Return with Two New Tracks

Indigo Bunting are the kind of act you’re meant to fall in love with and know very little about. They’re an Austin outfit with some connections to Tiger Waves, but that’s where the story ends…as far as we know. Still, they pop up out of nowhere, toss an album at us, disappear then pop up with a few new gems, like today. While everything’s showed brilliant promise, these two numbers feel like they’ve finally got things clicking on all gears. “White Noise” this bursting pop hit, calling upon forefathers like Unicorns and Animal Collective to craft collage pop pieces on the right side of weird; the chorus for this one is super rewarding. “I Don’t Mind” illustrates the band’s songwriting gifts, offering warmer tones while still orbiting the same pop planet as the A-side here. Never enough words to write about such a talented bunch.

JW Francis Shares Place I Know Video

JW Francis quietly dropped his I’ll Love you Forever, Bye EP almost a year ago, but to be honest, its just now making its way to my ears, especially now that he’s sharing this brand new video for one of the standout tunes. The tune has this sort of warped pop bent to it, it’s got this warbling meander to it; I feel that’s apt as the video sort of encompasses the same sentiment, particularly in the bike scenes. That said, I think the full-toned voice of Francis is particularly charming, weaseling its way right into my ear holes; this is a nice early Monday morning jam, if you’re listening.
