Enjoy Glass Famine

Glass Famine is a brand new act out of Chicago, and as Monday’s are great for introductions, why not introduce you all to their new tune. They have a slew of reference points, but they’d probably fit right in with some of the more pop centric outfits on Drag City. I love the subtle backing vocals, and the way the song charms take a casual stroll of cool just around the 2.5 minute mark. Oh, and you’d be wise to check out the wordplay in the lyrics; you’re likely to find a peerless maturity. We’ll give you more from the group as it comes out way!

Pleased to Meet You Teen Pope

Occasionally really great music escapes me, even from the confines of our own fair city, but I won’t let this Teen Pope slide on by. From the minute I pressed play, there was this old school vibe a la the Feelies, all jangling and sweet. But, going forward, they weren’t a one-trick pony, offering up a DIY ethos backed by an intangible tenacity. Their four song EP is filled with these little nuggets of fun, including hooks and bubbling cool; I definitely think I found a new local band to fawn over for the next little while. Join me in jamming their Going to Vegas EP.

Charmed Pop from Silent James

Cruising through my usual spots, I noticed that Discos de Korlian had a few new releases up this weekend. One was the reissue of the Yetis 2014 EP, but for this post, let’s turn to the new record from Silent James. It’s an enchanting bit of balladry, with the focus consistently circling the voice of Jaume Benedito. There’s also something nostalgic in its sound; it’s singer-songwriter fare elevated with varying bits of accompaniment, giving off a natural swing…a kin to the earliest of Jens Lekman. What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up will certainly live up to the charms of this track.

 

Late to the Party: Wished Bone

It looks like our good friend Tom over at GFP is jumping full on into his new record label, Human Noise Recording; his newest release from Wished Bone is another great effort you’ll want to add to your collection. There’s something incredibly intoxicating in the new LP, Cellar Belly. It almost feels like the group are being playful, as if they want you to have fun with their brand of pop. But, in saying that, there’s also a natural foreboding that emanates from the subject matter and emotional pull. I’ve been stuck spinning “Yellowstoned” quite a bit today…but then again, I’m a sucker for anything Yellowstone. Go on and stream the release below, with a physical copy coming out at the end of the month.

Pollen RX Are Back

Sunbelt Emptiness should be required listening for all humans, so get on that HERE. But, more importantly, Pollen Rx are back with new music! The group, as ever, remain undeniably catchy; I love how the surfy guitars work to set the scene for Maud’s vocal performance. Perhaps more important is the message the band is brandishing; the band describe this tune as their response to the ‘pervasive sexualization of women and the elevation of young women.’ It’s one of the things that make Pollen Rx so vital in our musical scene; they can deliver a hook as good as any other, but its important to note that there’s always an underlying message. Austinites will recognize this tune as a standout of the band’s recent live performances, but the rest of you should check out their tour dates as they head out in June on their way up to Chicago and back!

Juliana Daugherty Releases New Single

Juliana Daugherty has already popped up on our radar with her first single from her forthcoming LP, and the latest single only cements our earlier praise. Musically, it’s pretty minimal, with the song predominantly working around a quieted guitar strum; you’ll get extra little electronic samples bubbling up carefully so as not to overstate their presence. Throughout the track, her voice mesmerizes, rising and falling with purpose as each lyric is delivered; there’s almost a hint of a quiver that creates an added aura of intimacy between performer and listener. Her new LP, Light, will be delivered on Jun 1st via Western Vinyl.

Nervous Twitch Deliver New Video

Seems like just yesterday that Nervous Twitch released their excellent I Won’t Hide LP for Oddbox Records; in fact it was last November. It’s a great listen, and the band have just sent us this video for one of the album’s standout tunes, “Promised Me the World.” This track takes on a bit more of a classic fuzzy punk sound, which builds in hooks while still sounding tough as nails. And, as with all Nervous Twitch songs your toes begin to tap uncontrollably; you might even find yourself bouncing about the room…so be sure your listening area is safe. Saturday Night Drop New Single

Saturday Night are starting off the cycle for their new record with this great tune. The DC group has this almost garage vibe, but there’s something from the vocals that’s making me invest deeply in the band. It’s a slight little inflection, like an uplift at the end of the notes, akin to the way Ted Leo operates. But, that vocal ploy isn’t enough, as they bring in a soulful female vocal counterpart to balance things out. It’s catchy and ballsy and really good; the band will be releasing their debut self-titled album via Gentle Reminder Records in August.

Negative Scanner Prep Nose Picker

It seems like it’s been awhile since I’ve really gotten down on some good old rock n’ roll, so let’s offer up this great new jam from Negative Scanner. It hits hard from the start, shouting over those discordant guitar chops. What really struck me on this single is its chorus, where the band flex their musical muscles by letting the instrumentation ride out in hurried fashion behind the vocals; there’s just something about it that gave it this elevated punk feel. Nose Picker is the title of their new LP, and of course, it wouldn’t be great if Trouble In Mind Records weren’t releasing it on July 20th.

RF Shannon Album Release Party Tonight @ Ch’ups

It’s a fairly busy Wednesday night over in Austin city limits…the likes of Half Waif, Vagabon and Kenny Chesney, but why not go local? There’s a great release show for RF Shannon happening over at Cheer Up Charlies this evening. The group just released Trickster Blues, which in my opinion has some of the best songs they’ve crafted, but you have to get there early as there are other perennial ATH faves taking the stage. Diamond Center always puts on an enjoyable set, and Jesse Woods is bound to bring his balladry to the Cheer Ups stage. Doors open at 9, and the place will fill up quick, so be there early!
