Brand New Pia Fraus Album Announced

It’s been just about ten years since we’ve gotten a proper full length from Estonia’s Pia Fraus, but by the sound of it, it was well worth the wait. They begin their journey back with this beautiful entry into their catalog, opening up with a bit of dreamy pop, bordering on elements of shoegaze. Soon, the song opens up, allowing for the perfect duet vocal performance, calm and delighting. Somehow the song feels brief, yet so enchanting that I can’t help but press play over and over and over. They’ll be releasing their new album Field Ceremony on October 13th via Shelflife Records.

Spinning Coin Announce Debut Album

We’d likely have posted about Spinning Coin again, as they’ve just announced their debut album. But, for me, the importance revolves around Edwyn Collins of Orange Juice doing the production work for the band in the studio (makes my day). The video encapsulates a casual experience, but the song seems to pull from our favorite parts…all from different directions. The vocals occasionally reach for the skies, tonally, a la Real Estate‘s early work. Guitars have a definite jangling affinity for all things Oceanic (both modern and past renditions). Plus, there’s this steady bounce that should please any pop fan. All these combined in one track make the odds of Permo being a success rather high; look for the LP on Geographic Music on November 10th.

Start Your Day with The Salient Braves

For awhile, news of a new LP from the Salient Braves has been floating about. Now we’ve got a release date and a new song for you to start planning your purchase. This song is built on the back of a piano, incorporating the pleasant croon of the vocals to further the band’s brilliant use of melody. As the song moves on, touches of strings are added to the layers, building towards a more pronounced ending for the track. Their new records is titled Delusions of Grandeur, and it’s being released by Broken Down Records on September 22nd.

Enjoy New Music from Gun Outfit

It always seems weird to me that Gun Outfit isn’t living in Texas…though the same could be said for parts of New Mexico, Utah or Arizona. They craft this intelligent Americana, seemingly rooted in the vastly barren expanse of Western America. Sure, there’s country/folk leanings, but on this latest single, the musical unfolding seems to create a broad horizon…a lonely road heading deep into the orange mesas with a car packed full of the band members. I want to be in that car, I want to listen as the wind whispers…but most of all, I want to hear the group’s entire new record, Out of Range; it drops on November 10th via Paradise of Bachelors.

Brand New Milan to Minsk

When I first put on this new Milan to Minsk single, I was oddly reminded of “Electronic Renaissance” by Belle and Sebastian…a song that spun samples into the groundwork for a brilliant pop song. The sampling and slow opening of this single does precisely that, allowing the listener to adjust their ears before Daniel Rote makes his vocal entry. His turn of words and vocal tones is definitely akin to Dan Bejar (Destroyer), though I like the murkier quality of the music surrounding Rote; it begs you to immerse yourself into the song…it’s okay to get lost. This is a brilliant piece of constructive pop, setting the expectations high for the band’s new EP, Welcome to Hitler.

One Last Wand Single

We’re about two weeks out from the release of Plum, the new LP by Wand. I like their approach thus far, giving us little glimpses of the band’s future, all with slightly different turns, musically speaking. This one is really something, a 7 minute opus carefully structured with varying movements from start to finish. Lofty folk vibes radiate from the song’s early moments, and rides that wave for a minute before slinking back, leaving an opening for the band to take a heavy-handed jam through the song’s close. Seems like there is so much going on in this record, but we’ll have to hold back judgment until it’s released via Drag City on 9/22.

Meet New Austin Supergroup All Eyes

What do you get when you take former and current members of Octopus Project, The Sword, Ume, Skate or Die, Midnight Masses and Stiletto Feels all into one? You get a supergroup, of sorts; you get All Eyes crafting a brand of music you’re not likely to hear anywhere else in the Austin landscape. This tune opens with a bit of doom and gloom (perhaps the Sword influence), but the string samples hint at pop sensationalism. You don’t have to wait long to hear Jordan from MM spin her vocals atop the chorus. It circles back for the crashing rock moment, surrounded by swirling bits of noise, and then back again. You’ll never be able to pigeonhole these guys, and thank goodness for that. The band will have their live debut over at The Electric Church this Saturday night, with Teevee, Fire Walk with Me and This Cold Night. Go meet this great new Austin act!

Enjoy This Strawberry Runners Tune

The winds of fall have blown into Austin today, and what a perfect setting for this joyous Strawberry Runners track. Singer Emi Night has this inescapable voice, and while the volume itself is quiet, it’s still quite striking. Musically, this number is fairly stripped down, using light percussion and samples to create space for her voice and intricate little guitar lines; there’s a brief musical eruption near the 2 minute mark, adding a further fine touch. You’ll definitely find similarities to a young Jenny Lewis, particularly in the vocals. In the Garden, In the Night will be released on October 20th via Salinas Records.

Jam This New Seazoo Pop Tune

When I first pressed play, the synth work led me to believe that I was about to embark on a psychedelic journey with Seazoo. But, they quickly take the jam element from the intro, turn into a crisp guitar jam that allows for the dreamy vocal delivery that elevates the band into perfect pop. I like the momentary respite pulling back just before the 2 minute mark, awaiting the band to catch up and stomp their way joyously to the end. The Welsh outfit will be releasing their debut album this November…should be a winner.
