Gorgeous Folk From Enderby’s Room

As of late, I’ve been feeling enraged every time I look at my phone or the internet, so I’m glad to finally share something that brings a bit of tenderness and beauty to a world of filth. Enderby’s Room are some Londoners who are making exceedingly beautiful indie folk music. Don’t believe me, hear the track below for an example. “Lakeside” is taken from the band’s upcoming spring release and has a subtle beauty that will overwhelm you. Soft guitar eases you into the expository lyrics that paint you a picture of a landscape that transports you elsewhere. The vocals are mild and tranquil–a lush wave of male/female harmonies. There’s also an excellent string accompaniment that joins in near the end of the song and makes the track really soar. Take a listen and look out for Enderby’s Room’s self titled album which is due out April 14th via Fika Recordings.

Bluesy Folk From Nadia Reid

I’ve never been to New Zealand, but damn it if they don’t put out some great artists for us to enjoy over here stateside. Nadia Reid is a songwriter who hails from Port Chalmers and she’s got a Sharon Van Etten meets Daughter aesthetic in her tunes. You get the bluesy guitars and the lush and impeccable female vocals that combine for a great track on “Richard.” There’s a bit of story telling on this track, and the guitars takeover the track with some bite as well that should keep you hooked. Take a listen and add another great artist to your ever growing list of solid female songwriters.

Nadia Reid has an album coming out on March 3rd called Preservation.

Show Review: Ne-Hi/American Wrestlers @ The Sidewinder (1/14)

Saturday night, I ventured out to The Sidewinder to catch two bands that have been all the buzz around the indie rock world as of late– Ne-Hi and American Wrestlers. What I got was proof that sometimes there’s a good reason for buzz. Both of these bands brought it hard, playing to a not nearly crowded enough venue, but throwing their whole selves into their sets. Read on for some brief thoughts about the night.

The xx- I See You

Rating: ★★★★☆

When your first album is a sweeping success, how do you move forward and create something that both steps away from your past hits yet strikes the same sort of resonance with your painstakingly huge fan base? This seems to be the question that plagued the ever-huge The xxon their sophomore album–while new tunes from these indie rock darlings immediately grabbed my attention and affection, these feelings didn’t bring me back to continued listening. Third time around, it seems like these South Londoner’s have shaken off the chains of their past catalogue and pushed into exciting new space.

With I See You there is a key caveat–to really dig into the songs, you need to be willing to accept the pop simplicity that the band has tried their hand at this go-round. Before, it sounded as though the band made their own sound, which shaped and happened to appeal to pop listeners, but here they’ve put their own spin on pop music itself. On this album, the tight and intricate guitar-work that first drew in early fans has been supplemented with sampling, and more synth breakdowns. However, for The xx, this feels like a natural and logical progression.

The band launches straight in with dance-ready opener “Dangerous” with sampled horn sounds. You’re rooted to the track by the prevalent bass line, pulled closer by the ever-enticing male/female tradeoff in vocals that this group has always excelled at. These vocals are punchier than you’ve heard them before; more commanding and compelling. This grip that The xx puts on you holds strong through the first four songs. Single, “Say Something Loving,” isone of the superstars of the album, again the vocals are demanding and so strong, begging you to scream along with them. The samples are integrated with the vocals seamlessly, hitting you ears with ease and not distraction.

Later on you get tunes like “Replica,” and “I Dare You,” which rely on the bands’ knack for sleek guitar riffs. “Replica” is a simmering dark track with shimmering interludes of lightness. This song may not hit you hard with immediacy on your first spin of the record, but provides a less obvious treat for the next listen with its detailed lyrics. On the contrary, there’s “I Dare You,” which stomps into the penultimate and will immediately jump into your favorite track place. The percussion on this song is a steady beat of what sounds like sampled handclaps, which puts a dance-rythym immediately into play. Those sleek guitars mirror the vocal melody, playing into the pop aesthetic, an the result is pure bliss.

Overall, I See You is a bright and bold move for The xx, striking an easy-listenable balance between intricate and simple–offering hooks for your first listen and subtleties that will hold your attention and have you coming back for more. Like the ‘new love’ high that a lot of the lyrics touch upon, you want to stay with I See You for the long haul; “don’t let it slip away.”

Another Gem From Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever

Melbourne’s Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever have made my short list for acts to watch in 2017 after each single they’ve dropped up to this point has been another pop masterpiece. “Julie’s Place,” is no exception, and the video below will let you take a listen to the track while watching a slice of life at high speed. The track has got infectious guitars that ferociously tear through the track at high speeds, and the vocals are a mellow compliment to the instrumentation. Take a listen and look out for their Sub Pop debut EP, which will be out sometime this spring.

Spot On Quirky Folk From Bonny Doon

Before today, I wasn’t too familiar with the likes of Detroit’s Bonny Doon, but now it’s safe to say that they’re on my radar for sure. The group is a four piece that began out of the ashes of several other punk bands, the members of Bonny Doon reportedly discovering their sound by playing as quietly as possible. The result is brilliant folksy indie rock, which you can hear for yourself on “I See You,” below. The song is a like an intricate tapestry of great one-liners that add up to a beautiful story. With soft spoken vocals and gentle guitars, it’s a melancholy track that’ll linger in your head for a while. Take a listen and look out for the band’s self-titled debut, which will be out March 10th on Salinas Records.

Dance Along To This New Jens Lekman

Everyone loves Jens Lekman, that’s sort of just a known fact around the indie rock world. So I’m glad to be able to post about some new tunes from the artist in the form of this track, “What’s That Perfume That You Wear,” which is a great track to set your day in motion and get your dancing shoes on early. The song begins slowly, letting Lekman’s unmistakable vocals guide you along, building up to the introduction of the dance-rhythm, including steel drums. Take a listen and get stoked for Lekman’s upcoming release,Life Will See You Now, which is out February 17th via Secretly Canadian.

Crisp Shoegaze From Weird.

10945913_715825961865750_7564526240625973907_oIt’s 2017, let’s get Weird. Well, actually, first, let’s go back a minute to jam something we missed at the end of last year. Weird. is the solo project from Italian multi-instrumentalist Marco Barzetti, and his newest single, “Forever Floating Feels,” is a burning ball of shoegaze energy that we shouldn’t pass over. You can hear for yourself below, as the grunge guitars createthat mountain of sound that we love in the shoegaze genre. The vocals are barely discernible, barely whispers above the instrumentation. Take a listen below.

Sorry I Missed This: Eerie Glue Release New EP

15370008_1172021516214834_4779535536833285896_o-2Eerie Glue are a four piece out of Copenhagen, and while we were in the thick of festivus, they released their killer new Horror EP. I’ve included a track below off of the release called “Jodi’s Song,” but you can take a listen to the whole thing over on their soundcloud page. The band’s sound is a mix of classic indie rock with some subtle hints of psych rock and shoegaze. The guitars are nice and twangy, trading riffs back and forth over the bold drum beats. As for the vocals, you got a healthy dose of reverb that are filled in with backing vocals near the end. Give this band some love.
