While we’re getting close to warmer weather, what better way to dream of summer than with some folk pop? This track, “Pasadena,” from Young Mister is a great way to start anticipating chill vibes and carefree attitudes. It centers around the vocals of Steven Flore, and a laid back beat, as he crafts a cute tune with a choral hook that will reel you in and hold you there. Take a listen and get ready for his new, self-titled album,Young Mister, which is out June 24th via Refresh Records.

Grado Gives You Quiet Folksy Bliss

grado-musicIt sounds like there is quite the interesting story behind Grado, the project of Michael Bloss, who currently lives in East Anglia and is making beautiful indie folk. According to his website, Bloss has spent the last six yearsliving in cities around Europe, and the name Grado comes from two cities in Italy and Spain that share the same title and influenced him greatly in his travels. This track, “Graveyard Shift” is an example of the kind of delicate blend of acoustic guitar and wispy vocals that Bloss channels into his craft. More than that, this song alludes to the excellent storytelling that you can expect on his self titled debut,Grado, which looks like comes out today. Take a listen and then go pick up that album.

Can’t Not Share New Local Natives!

13063015_10154004937181278_640210931557770896_oThis song broke out a few days ago, but to hell with it! Local Natives, your favorite band that blends raucous percussion and lush harmonies have victoriously returned, and while they haven’t officially announced a new album, they have shared with us “Past Lives,” which is a song that I’ve had on repeat for the past three days. You’re greeted with the familiarly soaring vocals of Taylor Rice, accompanied by some swelling synths that their sophomore record, Hummingbird employed so well. The track gives you Local Natives as you’ve known them before, but some changes are also traceable in the mix as well; the guitars are more angular, sharper as they cut through the song. Of course you still have that staccato drum rhythm, but the vocals, while still beautiful, have some bite of raw emotion to them when the song builds to its end. Take a listen and look out for news about their third album, which should hopefully be gracing our ears within the year.

Kevin Morby – Singing Saw

kevinmorbs
Rating: ★★★★☆

Kevin Morby has been making albums under his own name for a few years now, and with each release, this brand of Americana-influenced rock seems to grow and take a more definite shape. Singing Saw is his third full length on his own, and its nine tracks of delightful folk rock, well orchestrated and complex, haunting and lingering in their construction.

The album eases you in gently, with Morby at his quietest with Cut Me Down, but then picks up quickly with infectious single, I Have Been To The Mountain. Opening things up, you get the impression that Morby is picking up where he left off with his last release, Still Life, which came out in 2014. This track has got that stewing darkness that centers around Morbys smoky vocals, akin to what you found on that last record with tracks like Drowning, but where this song nails down the difference is the way in which Cut Me Down, starts and stops, creating newfound drama. Morby looks you in the eyes as he takes his stance and proclaims And youre going to do/what you came here to do/ So why not do it now/cut me down. This kind of welcome confrontation adds a bit of a punch behind the folk blend.

Such a lyrical punch is mirrored in the instrumentation on the next track as the first track begins to pick up in pace before the second track makes its entrance. I Have Been To The Mountain, is an exceptional songone that makes you want to dance as well as marvel at how detailed it is. Theres this brooding darkness underneath the groove that comes from the string work and the acoustic guitar that begin the track and then simmer underneath through its duration. To balance this darkness, there are the popping horns that chime in and the gospel choir Ahhs that intercede and combine with Morbys vocals.

Singing Saw, the title track, follows up on the dark undercurrents of the previous number, the licks of guitar snarling through the mix like flames of a growing fire. However, this song doesnt just stay in one place, but picks up strength as it goes. Theres so much going on here, and yet, each instrument and vocal note feels precisely placed as the number builds and builds. The rest of the album keeps surprising youwhether its the bouncy Dorothy, the gentle, lyrically driven Black Flowers or ending blues-inspired Water, you remain with Morby to the very end.

What sets Singing Saw apart from your average folk rock is that does both the quiet and bombastic tracks superbly welltheres never a dull moment on the album. The brevity of the nine songs works to hold your attention and keep you rooted in their fine craftsmanship. You ought to take a listen.

Dinno Channels Chill Pop Vibes

1547932_390691291077633_577453519_oDinnoare a french duo out to take the world by storm with their laid back grooves of sun-soaked pop music. It appears that they’ve released an EP last month, and word is starting to get to the states about their great blend of laid-back pop with psychedelic tinges to the guitars. The track I have for you below is called “Reflexion Solaire D’une Rouquine,” and has a Real Estate meets Mac Demarco style to it. There’s a lot to love on this song– the twangy guitars, those soft vocals, and the layers of percussion that finish it all off with a flourish. Go check out the rest of the EP out on Music Unit here after you’re done enjoying the one below.

Electronic New Wave From NO/NO

12028820_904958519559904_2891444078120180650_oNO/NO hail from Milwaukee and specialize in synthy new wave music. They’re on their way to releasing a new album, and with that, earlier this week they shared a new single called “Whatever,” which will help you end your work week, or keep plugging through the day, whichever is your case. What strikes me about this track is the general balance of the whole tune; there’s a whole lot going on in this blend of electro-pop, but it’s not overwhelming or too much. The percussion is smooth and the synths chime in and out, making the track a near five minute effortless groove. Take a listen and get ready for Sound and Light, which will be out sometime this spring via Gloss Records.

Hurry Blasts Through With Sunny Pop

hurryHurry, from Philadelphia, formed back in 2012, and are about to hit you in the face with their latest dose of bright pop in “When I’m With You.” Almost from the moment you start the track, the bright vocals chime in and are the constant source of light within the tune. This component is what really makes the song; the half-falsetto is ever-present and creates a unique sound that you won’t soon forget. The vocals are complimented by the hazy guitars that have just the right amount of distortion to them. “When I’m With You” is a track you should probably send to your loved one, or perhaps just treat yourself to with your windows down. Get to listening.

Infectiously Dreamy Pop From Her’s

Her'sOh man, this track is a real winner– possibly my favorite track of the week! Her’sis a duo out of Liverpool that are making jangle pop worthy of your eager ears. This song, “Dorothy,” is really special– there are these edgy guitars that cut through the song over and over again, making for catchy riffs that give it a healthy bounce. Meanwhile the vocals are drenched in a Morrissey-Like quality of emotion and swagger that perfectly matches those ceaseless guitar hooks. To top it all off, there are great juxtaposing oohs that balance everything out and the track ends after a sweet build up. Make sure you take a listen to this song and let it take over your day.

Digging This Funky Psych From Stone Cold Fox

unnamed-7First off, hat’s off to Stone Cold Fox from Brooklyn for their excellent band name. Secondly, once you listen to “Morning Light” below, you’ll understand that this band’s got way more going for them than just a great name. This song is the perfect blend of indie rock and psych, which moves along in a slow groove that begs head-bobbing and overall jamming. Not only that, but the band builds to the end of the song, letting the fuzzy guitars grow louder and more present. Overall, it’s a great laid-back track–one that you will definitely revisit throughout the day. Take a listen and get ready for Tunnel Vision, which is their forthcoming EP and is out April 29th.
