Mellow Rock From Knight Night

11046915_825678424172816_1536771806089696562_oHere at the ATH office, we never really know what kind of emails we are going to get in our inbox, but sometimes you take that chance on a strange looking press release and come up rewarded. That’s what happened here today with the track I have from you from Knight Night. From the picture, I was expecting death metal, what I got instead was an elegantly crafted soft rock tune from this project ofSerafeim Giannakopoulos, which strikes the same sort of tone that we fell in love with from Snowmine. The vocals are sweet and gentle, carrying you through the easy jam. Simultaneously, the guitars meander through the track and the bubbling drums round the whole thing out. There’s even a bit of a build at the end of the delightful tune, one that will satisfy your rock and roll desires. The band’s debut album,God Is A Motherfucker, is out January 29th via Inner Ear Records.

Fresh Electro Folk From Astronauts

1956823_294205520754518_8635240297309042899_oIt’s been about a year since we’ve heard from Astronauts, or the project of London’s Dan Carney. Regardless of that absence, Astronauts are back in the form of a sleek little jam by the name of “Civil Engineer,” which you should take a listen to below. The track simmers for its duration, the synths combine with some gritty undertones of guitar as well as layers of subtle vocals to create a highly textured song. You’ll find it’s easy to lose yourself in the song; Carney’s vocals are soft and entrancing. Stay tuned for the official release of the single on February 19th via Lo Recordings.

Beverly Strikes Again With Pop-Punk Bliss

12185003_1051680674852721_2170054358121692146_oBrooklyn’s Beverly has already burst into the indie scene as proponents of the This time around, they’ve enlisted the help of ATH favorite, Kip Berman, of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, to provide his well cultivated guitar riffs and overall magic to their sound. The result is infectious, pop bliss with that choral hook that will have you singing right along. The guitars are edgy and gritty, contrasting with the sleek vocals of Drew Citron. It’s safe to say that we’re excited for their upcoming release,The Blue Swell, which will be out in May on Kanine Records.

ICYMI: Crisp Pop From Day Wave

12593504_468969969953751_163989100646231908_oDay Wave, or the project of Oakland’s Jackson Phillips, has become one of those bands that we can count on to deliver spot on lo-fi/synth pop tunes and so it’s not a surprise that we’re posting about him again. The latest news from Day Wave is that he’s got a doubleEP coming out pretty soon, which is called Headcase/Hard to Read. From that upcoming release, Phillips has shared “Gone,” which is a stunning example of the infectious pop tunes that Day Wave really excels at. The guitars cut cleanly through the mix, while the vocals are hazy and far away. Take a listen and preorder the double EP here.

Sea Pinks – Soft Days

0006266989_10Rating: ★★★★☆

Belfast’s Sea Pinks have become a staple in my listening catalogue over the past few years; its strange to think that a band who has only been around for six years has already been so profoundly prolific, but it seems that releasing a solid LP almost every year is just the way Sea Pinks roll. Soft Days is the latest of these stunning releases, and while more subdued and grounded jangly rock, the band finds yet another way to hook you and keep you interested.

This tightening up can be felt from the albums initiation. Opening number, (I Dont Feel Like) Giving In, begins slowly and with a bit of drama: some small guitar and soft building drums light up the path for a good minute of the track before the band launches in with those cutting guitar riffs and the vocals of Neil Brogan. The guitars are bleached out surf jangle to a T, interchanging with a bit of distortion on the chorus for a perfect pop arch. Immediately, youll notice the shift in focus from those orchestral elements that the band employed in the past, to the dueling guitars and their ceaseless jangle. At the end of the first number, you get the feeling that whats to come will be great.

And this intuition isnt wrong; Sea Pinks trade off track after track of spunky jangle pop with more subdued tunes, but its all beachy and lovely. Of course you have stunning singles that fulfill your rock and roll needs like Depth of Field and Yr Horoscope. The former employs the luke-warm vocals of Brogan and pushes them to a new height on the chorus, and the latter reminds me a bit of The Vaccines with its quick lipped lyrics and staccato drums. These bright flamed singles are balanced nicely with slower burning tracks like Green With Envy and I Wont Let Go, on which the guitar riffs meander more than shred, reminding you of beachy sunsets with a cool sea breeze coming off the water.

Soft Days is an album that you wont tire of easily. You will reach its end and feel ready to jump right back to the beginningit has the proper amount of catchy singles and deeper cuts to keep you interested. I will be spinning this one through the seasons for sure.

Are You Stoked For Wild Nothing’s Life of Pause Yet?

11958077_970211316378664_2723550751892443815_o-2No? Really? It seems almost impossible that you could have missed out on the excellent singles that Jack Tatum’s Wild Nothing has been doling out over the past few months in anticipation ofLife of Pause, but if you’ve been under a rock or something, you’re in luck. Today, we’ve got yet another single from the upcoming record with its title track, which you should immediately press play on below. This song is perhaps the single most resonant of Wild Nothing’s past collection of synth drenched pop tracks, and it’s every bit as good. Pulsing synths really drive this song, and the mellow beat grounds it in a danceable rhythm. All that’s left for you to do is preorderLife of Pausehere and wait a little while longer for the February 19th release date viaBella Union.

Nostalgic Jangle Pop Gem From The Artisans

the-artisansNow, not too much is known about The Artisans, but from my understanding they were formed near the end of 2014 and call home somewhere between Hartlepool and Newcastle. While this band is still under the radar, the song below, “Yield To The Night” is sure to bring about their impending rise. It’s got just the right amount of shimmer and shine to the jangle of the guitars, and those mellow classic indie rock vocals are sure to trigger some nostalgic listening of Orange Juice, or The Pastels, or your favorite indie rock band. What I’m getting at is that the sound here is instantly classic, but by no means trite. Take a listen and keep your ears listening for more from The Artisans.

Folksy Track From On Dead Waves

1923660_13006631214_9795_nOn Dead Waves is the project of Polly Scattergood and James Chapman (Maps), who together are making a bit of apocalyptic/doom folk music. The track below, “Blue Inside,” is a great example of the power that this kind of genre can pack;there’s a layer of haze over the whole track that adds a bit of drama to the usual folk sounds. Vocally, Scattergood commands the tune with a bit of help from Chapman on the chorus, but her voice comes across as fragile and tender, quivering in all the right places. The electric guitar that accompanies the choral arch is cutting and sharp, juxtaposing with the whispery vocals. This single is being released viaMute Records and we can expect a debut album from these two sometime in spring of this year.

Soulful Electronic Tune From Charlotte Day Wilson

unnamed-16Everyone needs to mix up their listening repertoire every now and again, and today, that change up comes from the electro soul of Charlotte Day Wilson. This Toronto artist just released the new single, “After All,” which you can hear below. The track has got a right little groove to it, but of course, the main star of the number are the vocals, which are all at once cold and warm, both blending in with the cool electronic sounds of the instrumentations and providing a contrast to them. There’s something compelling about the simplicity of the track and the subtle electronic beats that simmer throughout.

ATX Spotlight: Spot On Folk From Rain Collectors

raincollectorsSo, the folks over at Side One Track One got the premiere of this track, but it’s too damn good to not spread the love over here as well. We’ve loved ATX’s own Rain Collectors, or Santiago Dietche and Blair Robbins, for a while now, and have grown quite fond of their stripped down folksy duo sound. This new track, “Lately,” is every bit as lovely as what we’ve heard thus far from these two. Once again, they’ve put out a stunning example of a duet, their voices melding together as one in harmony. Check it out below.
