ACL Gimme 5 – Ley Line

As you can tell by the barrage of posts recently, we have jumped head first into ACL Festival coverage with tons of previews, guides, and recommendations. Today I am kicking off my yearly feature of Gimme 5 playlists with several performing artists selecting 5 of their favorite songs from other bands playing the festival. Last year seemed like a rousing success so I sent out a ton of these this year to collect a varying perspective on performing acts. My very first feature comes from our local friends in Ley Line. Hit the jump for their playlist and some words on each song.

Let’s Have More Big Thief

What else can we possibly say about Brooklyn based Big Thief at this point? We’ve been posting about their music since the very beginning and have continually hyped the band ever since. A we previously reported, the band is returning this year with their second planned release of 2019 entitled Two Hands. Prior to the upcoming October 11th release date, we have been treated to another new single called “Forgotten Eyes”. This one is much more of a ballad of sorts when compared to the prior single, and features some hints of Americana here and there. This is sure to be another great release. Pre-orders are live here via 4AD.

ACL Preview: Exit Music For A Festival

Shockingly enough, it’s already October, the weather is changing, and it’s time again for another round of Austin City Limits. Imagine that, I’m offering a post with advice for the old folks and I mention the weather! Time to settle in to Overture. Hey, I hear the food is great! But seriously folks, ACL is kicking off on Friday and the lineup yet again has a great deal to offer for fans of all styles of music. For the ever aging ATH crew, we typically look towards middle tier acts like Fidlar, Cherry Glazerr, The Comet is Coming, Otis the Destroyer, and Idles so we can get in early and leave before the crowds grow. For us, headliners usually kick off the end of the night as we head for the exits and home to our warm beds. Many memories have been made dodging water moccasins near the lake as Bob Dylan plays a nearly unrecognizable rendition of “Highway 61 Revisited”. Hit the jump for more!

More From Drens

It’s wild to hear such a garage inspired, sludgy, surf rock number like “Heat” coming out of the Dortmund. Not that the city isn’t capable of producing such sounds, it’s simply refreshing to hear a European band like Drens with some edge and grit. Pairing this new one with their last single “Curacao” and the band really seem like they might be on the verge of breaking it big over here. Stay tuned for more information on these upstarts and a planned debut LP coming soon.

More From Wives

Queens based rockers Wives have really been impressing me with their new and upcoming album So Removed. I could probably even go so far as calling it one of my favorites of the year. If you are not a believer yet, I recommend you check out the band’s latest single off the new release called “Servants”. Yet again I am finding myself entranced by the band’s ability to effortlessly pull off an old school, alternative rock sound while still pumping in some freshness with slick beats and production. I like this band.

So Removed will be released on October 4th via City Slang.

Have Another From Swoll

I’ve stepped out of my musical comfort zone a bit recently, and I’m glad I did, because I’ve really been enjoying the new music from Matt Dowling and his project known as SWOLL. Today I’m pleased to share with you new single, “Shudder to Think”, as the second preview of the upcoming new album. When compared to the previous, more chill single “Unwound”, this new one hits much harder and would certainly be labeled an electronic pop powerhouse of sound. A little bit hectic at times, but super catchy and full of infectious energy.

SWOLL will release new album UNWOUND on September 27th via Blight Records.

Sprinters Announce New Album

Man it’s been a bit over 5 years since I last heard from my musical friend Neil Jarvis. Apparently he’s since ditched his solo career, and now the Manchester based artist is focusing on his new band Sprinters. Having already released a debut LP, the group now has plans to release new album Struck Gold on November 15th via Meritorio Records. Prior to the release, Jarvis just sent over this hot new number called “Ending” to preview the upcoming album. It’s full of jangly guitars with a lovely, washed out yet engaging sound throughout.

Quiet Beauty From Carver Baronda

I hope you will join me in welcoming to the new artist buzz train New Orleans based songwriter Carver Baronda. She makes incredibly personal, heartfelt folk inspired tunes with hints of reverb and sparse backing beats. Our first exposure to this delightful new artist comes from her latest single “Devotion”. For me it fits perfectly as something coming out of New Orleans right now as hurricanes and weather threat the region again and we all seem to question our devotion to various things. Lovely songwriting.

Bardona will release a debut EP entitled Spooky Love on October 18th. (pre-order)

Soccer Mommy Drop New Tunes

A whole ton of praise has been given to Nashville based Sophie Allison and her musical project known as Soccer Mommy. We’ve certainly boarded the hype train for her music over the years and have seen her well deserved popularity and success grow. After her growth last year, Allison stayed relatively quiet on the new music front, but is returning today with her brand new single “lucy”. It has that same sort of mellow, shoe-gazy vibe to it but with a bit more of a polished sound sure to invite even more fans into the fold. If you dig, the song will be released in November via a 7-inch single on Loma Vista Recordings.

Upbeat Number From Corridor

As we ease into the weekend I am needing a bit of an upbeat tick in my music to prepare myself for fun, heat, and football. Funny enough, my Canadian friends from Montreal in Corridor have provided a perfect summer weekend track with their new one “Domino”. Regardless of if you can comprehend the French lyrics, you have to admit that this song is super easy to fall into with those jangly guitars and expertly crafted drum/bass pieces. Enjoy.

Corridor will release new album Junior on October 18th via Sub Pop Records.
