Mandy, Indiana Share Sicko (ft Billy Woods) Video

There’s a lot of buzz around the forthcoming release from Manchester’s (#ggmu) Mandy, Indiana, and they’re offering up another glimpse at what’s inside URGH. This single has them skirting the edges of industrial electronics; they’re not quite pushing the envelope rhythmically, allowing the intricacies of their construction to do all the talking. That said, they’ve brought along NYC rapper Billy Woods to deliver some lines, which add a percussive layer to the track on its own presentation. There’s a cool little racecar riff as the tune draws to a close, just another example of the group’s desire to incorporate the real world into their electronica. URGH will be out on Friday via Sacred Bones.

Friko Announce Something Worth Waiting For

We’re sure that you’ll be hearing this song on all the cool kid sites, so we wanted to throw our support behind the new Friko tune, along with the announcement of their new record. This tune works like a classic rock ballad, primarily operating as a strummed guitar and these vocals that continue to crest throughout each moment; there’s definitely some Bowie-esque moments, particularly when the track shoots off in a new direction around the 2:35 mark. It’s a pretty special tune, and one that puts them alongside other young acts like Sharp Pins circling nostalgia in their own likeness. They’ll release Something Worth Waiting For via ATO on April 25th.

It seems fitting that the Austin-based electronic/rock duo Almost Heaven took to the stage of Brushy Street Commons on Friday, January 30th, to celebrate the release of their EP aptly titled Raw Cranium, as national unrest took the stage for the world to see. Dance music and dance music culture have historically been a physiological response to constraint – political, social, economic, or cultural. If the response comes in the form of Almost Heaven, we will be dancing our way through these times in the best way possible.

Rolling Blackout Coastal Fever Return

The ATH crew have varied tastes here, but one group I think we all love is the Aussie bunch, Rolling Blackout Coastal Fever, who return today with their first new music in years (4 to be exact!). When you encounter the tune, you’ll see it stretching beyond 6 minutes, which may seem like a bit much for a pop song. But, what I love about the group is that when they ride into their long-form you can’t really tell; it’s like time stops and they switch between snaking guitar lines and bright choruses, with each moment being made to feel as if its a patch woven into the fabric of song. For example, fast forward to the 4 minute mark. Really excited to hear new music, and hope its got promise for a future LP!

 

Field Hospitals Share Everyfire

I’m really hooked on this new track from Minneapolis outfit Field Hospitals, who’ve promised us that there’s a new record on the way from them this year. Our first peek is below, a tune that adheres to the group’s penchant for playing crisp jangling guitar pop, working with these sharp drum hits that push the energy forward. While you can still hear those crystalline notes, the group is also working on stretching beyond the confines of jangle-core, moving to incorporate more synths and perhaps even dreamier notes within their music; you can hear those elements here, offering a broader approach to the pop milieu. We’ll keep you posted when we know about a new LP!

The Death of Internet Shares Blissed Pop

I love to settle into a week, and this track from Swedish producer The Death of Internet might just be the artist to help you dip your toes into the waters of this week. Light drum work and overlapping guitars encourage a subtle blend of bedroom pop; the pacing is peaceful, almost just above a resting heart rate. When the vocals come in, they operate like a cooling balm, layered atop and blanketing the listener in a sincere wash of melody. There’s some tonal notes on the vocals here that definitely feel familiar to those of you who love the pop scene in Sweden…and to those who don’t, you can still soak in the warm waters of this pop tune.

Paper Sister Share Turn Into Me

When you press play on the below Paper Sister tune, you’re instantly met with a growling guitar and thundering beat; it sets up a darkened realm where the group allow for their mixture of 90s alternative rock and shoegaze swirl into one powerful sound. I love the way one of the guitars is stabbing through the madness, matching the rhythmic punch, all of it while howling vocals soar atop. Pulling back briefly in spots lets the noise bubble up to the surface, only to tug it back into their penchant for pop sensibility. It’s a well defined mixture of your favorite sounds, and one that continues to shine the spotlight on this Austin outfit.

The fun thing about running a site that doesn’t beg you to pay subscriptions is we can kind of cover whatever we want, whenever we want. I started off the week kind of tossing my hair back to the previous week to get into the new Imaad Wasif and Club 8 jams. Then as we went forward, we covered the last singles from excellent records from both Annabelle Chairlegs and Joyce Manor. Not one to miss out on Austin jams, we got the new tune up from Don’t Get Lemon. Sprinkled it all in with some ATH faves like Prism Shores, Charm School and King Tuff. Give it all a listen!

I apologize I haven’t done my part on the local show scene as much as I would like; I can only do so much! But, I had to throw my two cents into the wind and hope that you’ll all brave the cold on Saturday night and come out and catch Shame in what I hope is their triumphant return to Texas. They’ll arrive into town on Saturday night on the back of the drastically overlooked Cuthroat LP; my friend said the OKC show last night was absolutely bonkers. They’re in town with Ghostwoman, and the show’s a fairly reasonable time, so grab your jacket and grab one the last remaining tickets! Going to throw up an old school jam to get you stoked! Dewey Share Outside of the Lines Video

The Parisian noise rockers, Dewey, will be releasing their Summer on a Curb LP in the next few weeks (2/13 to be exact!), and this new single is definitely one that should catch American audiences. Huge fuzzy riffs ring out from the get-go, but they’re patience, soaking your skin like a soft rain; the weight of those riffs pervades the entirety of the tune, keeping the tune grounded in power. A brightness still gets offered to the listener, with the vocals coating the top of the song in melodic sugar; you can also hear these bright little electronic bits working in the background, layering the track with a bit of classic pop sensibility! The new LP is being put out by Howlin Banana Records.
