The Gotobeds Return with Masterclass

There’s a lot of really great music out there, but the world needs a band like the Gotobeds in the musical rotation, a reminder of our most basic rock instincts. They’ve mostly been silent since Debt Begins at 30 (nearly 5 years ago now), but upon their return, they don’t seem to have skipped a step, cranking out a brand of working class indie rock that feels fresh and vital every inch of the way. They get up and drive themselves into their job, banging out every last bit of sound from their guitars; the vocals are scratching at their limits, and the drums bang like a hammer…and yet, when the job’s done, they just shut off and head home. Now, just because the first instinct you feel is their aggression, don’t be tricked, as the underlying pop pieces are what make this band a necessity. They’ll release Masterclass on May 16th via 12XU Records.

Dew Claw Drop Wall Single

There’s nothing better on a Friday than cranking up your stereo and just letting the rock songs rip, so wanted to start off this Friday on the right foot by sharing this big hook-laden pop rocker from Dew Claw. The band are an all-business pop rock outfit, as you can tell by the way they just kick in with these high octane distorted riffs that help you smash through walls. That said, they’re not shying away from their anthemic inclinations, building a set of huge riffs matched only by the huge hooks that bounce right through the chorus. Their new album, E.L.F. is out this May via Dromedary Records.

Premiere: Smug Brothers Share New Single

Just because we are out here prepping for that thing going down next week, doesn’t mean the world of new music plans to stop for us. My jam(s) of the day comes by way of Columbus based outfit Smug Brothers and their new single “Take It Out On Me” with accompanying B-side “Constellation of Eight.” Both tracks offer a very throwback, DIY, sort of garage meets indie sound akin to something you might hear in the late 90s Sub Pop scene. Get your dancin’ shoes on for the A-side and then stick around for the B-side to be serenaded away.

These tracks are part of the new Smug Brothers album Stuck On Beta, which is due out on June 6th via Anyway Records.

New Dean Wareham Song/Video

High upon my list of releases this Spring is the new solo effort from Dean Wareham, who just happens to be one of my musical go-tos. On this latest single, the song seems like it’s going to be a somber affair, lightly drifting along, guitar notes intertwining with the melody. Listen to the 48 second mark, and you’ll start to hear a new layer of guitar that lifts the song into a superb little pop dance that sparkles like a classic tune from the days of yore. Dean’s new LP, That’s the Price of Loving Me, will be out on March 28th via Carpark Records.

SXSW Interview: Cloth

I know SXSW has made some errors, and it’s hard to support something so massive in the current climate. But, one thing I’ve always appreciated it that a lot of country’s send their favorite artists abroad to spread the word on their art scenes…and Scotland’s Cloth is one such group we’re excited to get to know better when they make their way next week. They’ve got a new record titled Pink Silence coming out in April, so take a quick read below and get to know them!

Lunchbox Share Video for Letter from Overend

While we’ve loved Lunchbox in their most recent run, including last year’s excellent Pop and Circumstance, the music from their lost album Evolver has me swooning. Maybe I’m oversimplifying things, but it feels like a mixture of the Vaselines and Heavenly, albeit with these jazzy little pop structures that wouldn’t be out of place on a Stereolab record. All those little pieces course in and out of the latest video to celebrate the album’s reissue, and I think you’ll have a lot of fun just clicking play and soaking it all in. This video is a collection of scrolling photos from what I assume, and hope, is a lifetime of joy playing music and traveling about, fusing the spirit of the song with like-minded imagery. Evolver is getting released on vinyl via Slumberland on April 18th.

ATH x SXSW 2025 – A Playlist

I’ll keep this simple. SXSW music kicks off this weekend with our annual ATH vs SOTO party at Hotel Vegas on Sunday, and then things ramp up to 100 starting on Monday. As usual, it should be a wild and fun time for the team and we hope to see some of you out there. Many of you mentioned the daunting task of wading through all the bands coming to town, so I sat down, combed the entire list, and built out a playlist for you to peruse and hopefully make things easier. SXSW Interviews 2025: Last Waltzon

As we continue to churn out some of these SXSW getting to know you pieces, I am finding a lot to look forward to next week when the music lineup really shows up in Austin. Shishi Share Dog OK Visualizer (SXSW Artist)

I have a sick kid, so for the first time I’m able to dive through all these damned emails, and in there is this fun tune from Lithuania’s Shishi. The group is on my list of acts to catch when they roll into town for SXSW, and hopefully we’ll get to hear this new single, as it’s got this playful bit of garage meets post-punk attitude. Springy little guitar lines wiggle in and out of the tune, and I’m all for that; they up the ante to the fun by including some group vocal delivery, bringing in an old school vibe that will surely get stuck in your head. They’ve just signed to Birthday Cake Records for a forthcoming EP, so stay tuned!

Weatherday Shares Ripped Apart by Hands

Despite the song title offering up a grotesque image, the new Weatherday track offers a more intimate glimpse at the songwriting from the Swedish project. For the most part, the song is dominated by a heavy strum, which feels like it’s done so passionately that you can imagine blood dripping down the body of the guitar; there’s something to it that reminds me of the early Bright Eyes stuff where everything felt primal, as if there was no other option but to let it out into the world. Subtly, a sly little bit of electronics bubble, building towards the chorus, offering this softened charm that seduces the listener. This wonderful new tune appears on Hornet Disaster, dropping on March 19th via Top Shelf.
