Show Preview: Buke and Gase @ Red 7 (10/5)

Date Friday, October 5th
Location Red 7
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $8 from Transmission

Friday nights are always a blast, especially if you can squeeze in some well performed rock n’ roll.  One of the bands coming into town Friday, who are destined to be popular, if they’re not huge already, is Buke and Gase. Their shape-shifting indie-rock even got a Best New Music nod after announcing the release of their upcoming album, General Dome (1/29/13). If you want to be hip, and you want to be on the cusp of truly creative art, then you need to get to this show, or else your friends will mock you for being the one person who wasn’t on board with the group from the beginning.  Horse + Donkey will be opening the night, so be sure to show up around 10 PM. Here’s a hit from the band.

New Ballad from Calm as the Colour

It’s a good thing I have some sort of lineage in Scotland, otherwise I’d feel sort of odd about the way I fawn over their musicians.  I’m pretty sure this is the second Scottish track I’ve posted this week, and I’m okay with that.  Calm as the Colour is a four-piece (again not from Glasgow), and I was completely caught off guard when I heard the work they’ve put in on their recent Tomorrow Belongs to a World Apart EP.  It’s got four great tracks, and this one in particular approximates my love of both loud guitars and tight-knit guitar-monies.  It’s a pretty pop ballad, and sometimes those do just the trick!

New Jam from Those Darlins

This is a solid week for Those Darlins on our site, with the band letting us present their show at the Mohawk this coming Sunday evening, and now they’ve got a great little rocker to toss your way as well.  I like how the group’s slowed things back here just a second to allow for the story to take place, if not more allowing it to take on more of the focus.  Also, there’s a fuzzed out guitar rambling near the end, which is one of my favorite sides of the band, not to mention that inherent swagger/bravado they always capture in the studio.  If you dig this song, and you live in Austin…I better see you Sunday.  If you don’t, but you love the band, here’s yet another reason.

Pleased to Meet You: Triads

Things are really slow, with a lot of the music just getting stuck in the same space, so I’ve been relying upon the words of friends around the Net to discover things outside the typical realm.  I’ve really been digging this group from Athens by the name of Triads.  They’ve just released a new single with a killer track, “Day Off,” but I wanted you to look at their starting place, so you get the same introduction I received.  It’s got sort of a post-punk feel to it, though it feels a bit warmer, as opposed to darker…it’s smoothed out by a nice melodic churning guitar that runs throughout.  Hope you’re as excited by these cats as I am.

New Indie Pop Jangler (and Album) from Squares

I know I’m in the majority here, but I love my dance parties fueled by cutting guitars and jangling that makes me shuffle my feet in a joyous explosion.  I feel like I’d have a blast with my friends if I turned on this new tune from Squares, who I heard about from the very solid Indie Pop Saved My Life.  The UK group has just released, for the NYOP fee, an excellent little album titled Hate, Love and Public Transport.  I chose one of the more upbeat tunes, but there’s slow ballads, jangling songs, and hooks galore to make you smile through and through. Surely this is going to make your Tuesday.

I Like This Song By Errors

You may have noticed that I am randomly sharing songs. This one by Errors was added to my playlist of tunes that are regularly cranked at the Gray Manor a couple weeks ago.

This gem, “Pleasure Palaces”, is from Have Some Faith In Magic with a mini-LP called New Relics landing in mid-October. They’re opening set for Mogwai was excellent. Currently on the road in the UK, Errors will play Red7 11/13 opening for The Twilight Sad and I will be there.

Check their latest track called “Relic” here.

New Music from Burnt Palms

Something that arrives with fall continues to encourage me to take solace in my roots, as a true fan of indie pop–you know, the uber twee sort that you always want on your best mixtapes to girls/guys you’re crushing on.  If I could, I’d stick the entirety of this new album by Burnt Palms on there.  It’s a self-titled LP, but it’s filled with short songs featuring fuzz guitars and hip female vocal harmonies. Basically, it’s a mixtape in and of itself, giving you the ability to sink your teeth and your heart into the soul of the music.  Love it so hard.

Show Preview: Lord Huron @ Stubbs (10/3)

Date 10/3/12
Location Stubbs
Doors 9pm
Tickets $10 @ Frontgate

Plenty of great shows to choose from this week, with many of them coming on back to back nights Wednesday and Thursday.  My show pick for Wednesday has to go to indie surf/dream pop band Lord Huron.  I’ve never actually seen this band outside of their stellar SXSW performances show it should be nice to check ’em out for a full on show.  Supporting the band for the night is more than adequate opener Night Moves.  Great lineup, great venue = sure to be bad ass show.

Ticket Giveaway! + Dinosaur Jr. @ the Mohawk (10.4)

This is history here folks.  It’s not J. Mascis solo; it’s not some other line-up; it’s the old school SST Records line-up, fresh off the release of their newest release, I Bet On Sky.  We’re lucky that Transmission is continuing to bring such solid shows to our town, and they’re not just here to make a buck, they’re here to keep our rock n’ roll community alive and bumping.  If you want to see Dinosaur Jr. for FREE, all you have to do is leave us a number between 1-1000, and I’ll give the one closest to my number a pair of tickets to the show Thursday night.  Incredible openers (and locals) Shearwater will be opening, so show up early to make the most of your night.  We’ll pick the contest winner by 10 AM Thursday, day of show.

New Rock from Ceremony

So RayRay was complaining about how I dominated the site with “pussy rock” all Monday, so I wanted to start off your Tuesday with a re-hash banger that surfaced on Monday…that is before I return to my fall love of twee (more on that later today)  This jam comes from the powerful Ceremony, who’re doing a split with Titus Andronicus in honor of their tour.  It’s probably one of the cleanest rock tracks I’ve heard the group together, punishing your ears from start to finish.  Definitely a great live act, and their recordings just keep getting better.  You gotta head to one of the shows to grab these, but sadly no Austin date.
