Welcome Home the Sour Notes

holyshowOne of Austin’s hardest working bands, The Sour Notes, have just returned from a good little tour, so we’d like to celebrate that first of all; I’m glad they were able to successfully hit the road.  But, in honor of their return, they’ll be playing at The Blackheart this Friday night (it’s free), so you should all head out in order to welcome them.  In other SN related news, they just released a cassette single, which includes the below cover of “Mannequin,” originally one of the hits on Wire’s Pink Flag (one of my favorite LPs, period).  They do a dreamier take, but they definitely do the original justice.  Plus, the band has a video for their new single, which you can watch HERE! So many good things happening for these guys. Cheers; see you friday!

Enjoy Light Heat

lightheatWhen I first got this email regarding Quentin Stoltzfus’ new project, Light Heat, the fact that he was working with some of the members of the Walkmen caught my eye.  But, then I listened to the track, and realized I didn’t even need the connection due to the fact that the album is just an incredible listen through and through.  There’s lots of tinkering going on during this lead single, from piano touches to non-traditional percussion, all building the perfect stage to raise the voice of Stoltzfuz. If you want an album you can listen to from start to finish, uncovering beautiful puzzle pieces along the way, then be ready for Light Heat on June 25th.

Putin Sucks, Yeltsin FTW

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin just added a lovely new track to Polyvinyl’s Soundcloud and I decided it was share-worthy. I think you will, too.

The track is off of the pending release called Fly By Wire, which is available for pre-order here. The song, called “Nightwater Girlfriend”, features jangly verses giving way to a fuzzy-effected chorus and lovely bridge with the build back to the big break and a soft finish. Best thing I have heard from the band in a couple albums, IMHO.

Spanking New Tune from Nude Beach

nude_beach_kurtJust a short bit ago I praised the debut album from New York’s Nude Beach; it ended up making our list of top albums for 2012. Luckily for us all, we didn’t have to wait long before new tunes came our way; they have a brand new 7″ coming out for Other Music Recording. Again, the group is channeling the history of American rock n’ roll, but doing it with even more grit and balls than some of their predecessors.  This tune definitely has the hooks to keep you interested, and the songwriting to show these boys are a force to be reckoned with going forth.

Proto Punk from TRAAMS

919107_582153298485281_1428211538_oBands have a hard time making it all the way overseas, but I’ll gladly share with you this recent tune from TRAAMS.  The Chichester group drops in influences from bands like Mclusky, with pummeling drum lines and jagged guitar licks.  The vocals are a little bit muddy, but they step in line with the guitars and drums, adding an extra bit of force to the energetic number.  The group has just unleashed their Ladders EP via Fat Cat Records, and it’s chock-full of songs that are going to get you out of your chair.  Happy Tuesday folks.

Delightful New Tune from Tripping the Light Fantastic

trippingthelightI’ve been working really hard to bring this tune to you, and thanks to Tripping the Light Fantastic, I’m now able to share this incredible slice of pop music with you.  The group has recently put together a new split 7″ with Honeyheads; it’s available now courtesy of Dufflecoat Records.  I could pick a plethora of things about this song that make it stick in my head, be it the group harmonies or the random shouts of exuberance or the organ grinding in the background; I think I just am attracted to a great tune.  If you want to indulge yourself in well crafted songwriting, then let yourself get carried away in this joyous track.

More Sweet Tunes from Ski Lodge

Ski LodgeSki Lodge seems to be riding the waves of praise from all over the place.  First, they had the Internet buzz, then our friends Literature gave them the stamp of approval and we, of course, gave them our love after catching them over at Holy Mountain a few weeks back. They’ve finally locked down a firm date for the release of their album, Big Heart; it’s coming your way on August 20th via Dovecote Records.  And, in honor of the announcement, they’re streaming another new track with it’s warm indie pop melodies and spirited guitar playing.
