Katy Kirby Announces Cool Dry Place

Down here in Austin, our friends over at Keeled Scales have been raving about the incredible songwriting prowess of Katy Kirby, and today…lets hope the world is listening. She announces Cool Dry Place with this incredible video for “Traffic,” a song dedicated to a former partner who seemed determined to revel in his own trials rather than realize that “nobody has it better than you.” Her sound, perhaps influenced by her childhood singing in church definitely has a pop bent to it, though you can hear her pulling away from those tendencies. Honestly, take the work of my favorite Rosie Tucker and maybe sprinkle a little sugar on top; it’s got this great playful vocal that’s highly rewarding. You can grab the debut LP (it’s a Vincy Vaughn reference right?) on February 19th from Keeled Scales.

Shame Announce Drunk Tank Pink LP

The moment we’ve all been expecting has come to be; Shame, today, announce their brand new LP, Drunk Tank Pink. There have been hints that something was in the air since the release of Songs of Praise…but I’m actually referring to the musical style they’re brandishing on their latest batch of singles. They seem to have discarded the formulaic call and response post-punk that’s become quite the fad, instead favoring a more elaborate approach, often slowing things down to let notes ring out and build that internal tension for the listener. There’s still a solid release, but there’s time to reflect, rather than just be bashed over the head by blunt rock. Drunk Tank Pink will be released the day before my birthday on January 15th via Dead Oceans.

Antlered Auntlord is Danieled Auntlord; Announces Daniel Johnston Covers Tape

There’s a long story behind the upcoming release of Danieled Auntlord: The Daniel Johnston Covers Tape. Back in 2007, Daniel Johnston played the legendary Athens Popfest, going down as one of the most unforgettable moments in the festival’s history. Jump into 2016, and the festival, curated by Mike Turner of HHBTM, was welcoming Daniel back as one of the headliners, but in order to do so, they had to fashion him a live backing band. Mike and his team gathered Jesse from Antlered Auntlord as well as Jake and Marie from Eureka California; they recorded a tape covering Daniel’s songs and sent it to Johnston so he could prepare. But, here we are now in a year that could use some guiding light, so HHBTM has decided to release those recordings via cassette on December 5th, rounding out the year reminiscing about one of the world’s greatest artists. Here’s the Danieled Auntlord version of “Casper.”

US Highball Share Don’t Let It Be Me

As a big fan of the Pooches, it makes sense that I’m so infatuated with U.S. Highball, the new project from James and Calvin. Just over a year ago, they dropped Great Record, and they’re back with Up to High Doh dropping at the end of this week! Before you’re there, they may as well entice you with this melodic pop rock ditty; its just a little something to whet your pop whistle. That’s the great thing about the duo; they’re crafting these songs coming in at just under two minutes…so you press play, swoon, digest and then press repeat. That’s how it happens, right? Be sure to pick up the new LP this Friday.

HANYA Share Monochrome

I’ve really been enjoying this new HANYA tune today; it has bits and bits of good stuff, woven together to offer up this unique dreamy pop blanket you want to wrap around you. For me, Heathe Sheret’s voice has this subtle range that serves to knit all the little moments together; if the song goes towards shoegaze, she pulls it back in with the crystalline vocals; if it gets a little too pop, she flirts with the pitch, dropping it up and down in the mix to throw off the balance. Think you’ll be just as taken by this tune as I was, so be sure to keep an eye out for this Brighton outfit.

Bombshell Nightlight Ready Blue Heron Above Me LP

Our good friends over at Anything Bagel have a new release lined up for you just before the year draws to a close; the new LP from Bombshell Nightlight. The project is the work of Missoula’s Jon Cardiello, getting by with a little bit of help from his friends. For me, listening through this album sampler, its his voice that stands steady in the storm; it ties the listener to every nook and cranny. But, what I’ve been marveling at is the ebb and flow of these three tracks; they carry this unique ability to swell with pop melodies and little details that give the tunes a depth you don’t always get with the songwriter fare. The entirety of this listen is an ode to the struggles Jon faced in his mid-20s, from breakups to new love to the death of his father; its as relatable and intimate as you’re going to get! Blue Heron Above Me drops on December 4th!

Pleased to Meet You: The Pierce Kingans

The role of the small label is to throw support behind something you truly believe in, something you think will rise to top, something you want the whole world to hear…at least that’s how I see it. I think Subjangle Sounds it taking the same approach with the release of Pierce and Love to all the World, a compilation of sorts from The Pierce Kingnans. In this collection, you’ll find yourself enjoying 20 pop ditties, just on the right side of weird. Some tunes, like “No One Owns You,” carry the intimacy of bedroom pop, though you can get crisp rocking ditties like “It’s Bleed Too Long” too. For me, there’s just so much to digest, which is why I’m glad that the record’s a great introduction to an artists that currently has my tastebuds intrigued. What say you?

Romero Share New Single, Troublemaker

It’s funny, just when you’re about to go and pigeonhole an entire city and its musical output, something comes at you and says not so fast! Today, that band is Romero, the newest act out of Melbourne to bring the hype overseas. Now, don’t think this is your typical casual pop affair, as this is a high-energy, balls to the wall rock affair; it’s full on arena rock ready pop music, with Alana Oliver’s voice soaring with bravado over these towering riffs. It’s a huge sound, just laying in wait to take over the world with big hooks, so get your ears ready for some pop rocking sounds!

The Pale Kings Drop Poison Darling

Good old Tuesdays…a fancy twist on Mondays. So, I was in need of a good pick me up, and thought you could use the same, which is where The Pale Kings come into play. I’m not even going to lie to you; this sounds like a modern spin on the Smiths, just minus the douche-baggery that accompanies Morrissey (at least as far as I know). You’ll find spirited tunes, the sort that kick your shoes up off the dance-floor as your arms flail about. If anything, maybe your at home in your Covid workspace, so you’re quietly tapping your toes…either way…you can’t turn away from the joy in these tunes!

Enjoy This Orchid Mantis Tune

It’s more likely than not that you are unfamiliar with the experimental sounds created by Atlanta based musician Orchid Mantis. I assume this not because the music is not worthy of recognition, but because the artist has flown largely under the radar for the last several years (possibly on purpose). Popularity and notoriety will surely follow if more songs like this one called “Can’t See the Sun” continue to find their way onto the interwebs. Though somewhat experimental, the track is just downright catchy as hell and evokes a feeling of a more stripped down version of Beach Fossils with vocals akin to Jonathan Pierce of The Drums.

This song appears on a new album entitled Far From This World due out November 20th on Z Tapes.
