Jana Horn Announce Optimism

Earlier this year when I helped organize Slack Capital 3 (with Eric Bill/Howdy Gals), we got an early peek at new music from Jana Horn when she let us use “Time Machine” for the compilation. Now, she’s announced her debut solo LP, Optimism, and dropped another powerful tune I’d love you to enjoy. While her musicianship has always been extremely moving, this new single shows the strength of her voice alone in the world. There are some barely audible strums faintly hanging from the distance, carefully uplifting Horn’s airy vocals. She’s one of my favorite Austin songwriters, gifted in so many ways, so you’ll definitely want to check out Optimism when its released on September 18th.

Jonas Wilson Shares Ruling the World

Whether he’s working at Mr Pink Records or playing with the Midnight Stroll/Night Glitter, it’s a wonder that Jonas Wilson has the time of day to sit down and write his own solo work. But, perhaps our current climate has allowed the Austin musician the time to celebrate his own craft, focusing on his love of piano and harmonica, though spun through his own droning lens. It’s like this slow moving train wreck before you, yet you find yourself captivated, staring as it erupts into a beautiful ball of fire. I was super into the fuzzy bounce of the last minute, so maybe that’s where that analogy comes. If you’re into chilled out dark pop, then you’ll want to keep an eye out for Science Fiction Post Blues.

New Lunchbox Single

The last time I covered Lunchbox was over five years ago with their Smash Hits EP for Jigsaw Records, but, with a new LP on the horizon, it’s high-time we return to an ATH favorite. It doesn’t take long for the chairs to kick in here either, offering up that swirling jangle and steady drum bop from the get-go. Donna gets the front of the vocal mix, but Tim’s support adds a nice textural layer to the melody; it’s what makes us pop fans wilt and fall to our knees in praise. We get an added bonus with some horns from Gary Olson (who dropped a fine LP on his own earlier this year). It should come as no surprise then that this After School Special is coming your way on October 30th via Slumberland Records.

Mt Doubt Share Caravans on a Hill

UK outfit Mt Doubt just recently signed on to work with Last Night from Glasgow, so as a follower of the label, I checked in this morning to enjoy the band’s latest offering from their forthcoming LP. Like many of the band’s on the label, it’s difficult to discern a specific genre. Here, they seem to move from a broader folk swathe into an almost post-rock atmospheric, twisting and turning into this sort of smoldering folk-pop tune. Fading out, you get another glimpse at the experimental offerings, playing with a more elegant side of instrumental atmospherics that likely will play beautifully into the organization of their new LP, Doubtlands. The LP will drop this September.

Pleased to Meet You: Family Mart

Austin’s got tons of really incredible songwriters, and Mike Lee has definitely been one voice we’ve fawned over since his early days on the local scene, first with Letting Up Despite Great Faults and then Fanclub. But, he’s turned his current focus to a new project, Family Mart, and we get our first little taste below. Upon the first few listens, one of the things I adored about this track was the way he employs that dreamy guitar jangle, but instead of rushing it, he gives the song plenty of space, letting the drum beat keep the pace for everyone. It ends up leaving all these space for the soft tones of his voice to fit in between the cracks; it ends up pushing the melodies to sort of rise to the top. Plus, we get a bonus when his voice finds a foil with his friend Ali Wagner (Hex Boyfriend); her addition builds in this delectable contrast…not to mention the tune does get a slight bit fuzzier, which I certainly don’t mind! Without further delay…we present you with Family Mart!

The Persian Leaps Share Lost Cause

The Persian Leaps waste no time with their latest single, jumping in with that stomping rhythm and twanging guitar sound the instant you press play on their latest single. It’s a short little blast of power-pop, crunching riffs and soaring vocals; the song has a heavy hand throughout the verses, but the chorus elects not to be too boisterous, seemingly offering the softer side of guitar rock. Plus, they toss out some perfect overlapping vocals in the midst of it all, which definitely adds a dash of sugar to your pop coffee. This track features on the group’s new Smiling Lessons EP, dropping on September 18th.

Adulkt Life Share County Pride

This Adulkt Life track has been around for a day or two, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t give it a little shout out, particularly considering the band is helmed by members of Huggy Bear and Male Bonding. According to the band, they wanted to craft a tune similar to Devo in its sort of jerky structure, though they admit to having far too much anger to pulling it off how the envisioned. Instead, you get this huge heavy swell of bulldozing rock n’ roll, hypnotic and discordant, tethered by the vocal delivery of Chris Rowley. For now, we’re just hanging out with this single, but hopefully What’s Your Rupture will have news on a full LP soon!

Stream Brain Drugs Self Titled LP

We first got wind of Australian instrumental duo Brain Drugs when they shared “Nightshift” single with us, along with its accompany video. Today, we kick off a case of the Thursdays by offering a stream of their new LP, a way to ease into your day with a little bit of curiosity and wonder. For me, there’s this primal nature that seems to seep through your speakers, perhaps due to the simplicity of keyboards and drums; the drum work always seems like the soundtrack to a march of humans. Still, perhaps you turn to a song like “Moulds” that spews this warmth from the synth sounds. Little twists and turns weave you through this instrumental landscape, so time for you to maze your way through these sounds. All proceeds from the album go to Victorian Aboriginal Legal Services.

Wicketkeeper Share Their Debut LP

I’m so grateful for the reliable labels that never seem to miss for me, you know, like Trouble in Mind or Fire Talk or, as is the case here, Meritorio Records. They just announced the debut LP from London’s Wicketkeeper, and they’ve left behind a trail of pop bread crumbs to tease you along the way. Their sound kind of skitters all over in the tracks they’re currently offering up, from the great wall of guitar pop featured “The Side” to the 90s college yearbook of “Spin;” these are all glorious guitar songs to help you piss of the neighbor next door…or, I mean, to just turn up super loud as you sped down the Autobahn. Shonk is out on October 16th.

Intimate Number From Runner

Noah Weinman is a musician who sometimes performs solo, but also gets together with a musical collective of friends under the moniker Runner. Weinman recently made the move from the more gloomy Eastern coast of Rhode Island to the sunnier skies way off in L.A. For me, one can almost hear this transition in Weinman’s new song “New Sublet” as things start off fairly quiet, and subdued, but slowly some brighter elements get sprinkled in with a banjo and more urgent vocals. It feels like we just drove across the country. Lovely.

Runner will release this song as a part of a a new EP entitled One of One on September 23rd.
