Sustains Announce Sick Ones EP

You’ve really got to have something in your songwriting to make me fall in love in 2 minutes, luckily for Sustains, it didn’t even take that long. Heavy distorted riffs rang true immediately, and I was interested, but not sold until that extra guitar line takes a nice turn into the song to introduce a nice dose of melody to fawn over. Sitting back behind that huge wall of guitars are these soft vocals, coolly hanging behind the scene acting completely indifferent to the buzzing noise swirling about. And just like that, it’s over. You want more and you need more. You can have more if you pick up the Sick Ones EP, out on March 20th via Hidden Bay Records.

Nap Eyes Share Mystery Calling

The more I hear from the new Nap Eyes LP, the more I can’t wait to get my hands on their new LP, Snapshot of a Beginner. In this track, the song seems to rely upon the patience, both in Nigel’s songwriting craft and in the listener; there’s just this overwhelming feeling of calm that arises as you listen through the lyrics. On those, to me, it also reflect moments of patience, making nods to the mundane activities that often lead us to the daydreams of the world’s mysteries, only to find that the best mystery is probably all that’s around us…that’s how I see it anyways. Look for the new LP on March 27th via Jagjaguwar.

RG Lowe Announces Life of the Body

While he rose to popularity as one of the founding members of Balmorhea, Rob Lowe, aka RG Lowe, is no stranger to the solo effort, having released Slow Time in 2017. He’s back now with the announcement of Life of the Body, his follow-up, and once again on Western Vinyl. The angelic tones established in years of choir is omni-present throughout this tune, but the length and accompanying flourishes harken back to his other work. I loved the loud burst at 2:21, even if its merely a second; its about the thoughtfulness in Lowe’s craftsmanship. These are songs that go above and beyond the expectations of your average pop fare; Life of the Body drops May 22nd.

Indie Pop Tune From Blue Canopy

Some of you may know Portland based musician Alex Schiff, as he’s spent several years as co-writer for the indie band Modern Rivals. Well now Alex is stepping out on his own and releasing a new EP entitled Mild Anxiety which is set to be released in early April (pre-orders here). Under the moniker Blue Canopy, the EP’s first single is called “656” and is quite a lovely bit of indie pop music. It blends equal parts brightness and quieter, hushed elements to create a solid and memorable song in this genre.

On Saturday night our new writer, A.Burnett, went out to Scoot Inn for a show by the now legendary performer Dan Deacon. She wrote some words for us and took some pics as well. Next Two Singles from The Little Hands of Asphalt

We continue our coverage of the forthcoming LP from the Little Hands of Asphalt with the latest two singles from the Sjur Lyseid’s project. There’s only one more set of singles yet, so it’s best to go and get yourself acquainted with Sjur’s work before Half Empty is released. On “Dystopian Sci-Fi,” it feels like something Destroyer might have crafted; it has this brilliant piano line and distinctive vocal performance. “Six Feet Over” offers up a slightly Americana vibe, which doesn’t seem like a stretch, but definitely adds some differentiation to the album’s song cycle. If you like what you’re hearing, Fika Recordings releases the full album on April 3rd.

Simen Mitlid Announces Birds

I’m very much in a mellow mood this Monday, and thus my offerings have been fairly gentle today, like this new tune from Simen Mitlid. The Norwegian songwriter has been holed up for the last few years, quietly working on the follow-up to his 2017 release, Everything is the Same. What we have now is the same folk style he offered, only now it seems to be brimming with layers and textures; these make his quieted tunes feel like they expand inside your ears. Atmospheric touches build this blossoming pop euphoria within your head, still keeping things close to you as the light guitar strums pull your ear towards the speaker. Birds will be released later this year.

Rabbit Island Share In the Forest, Far Away

Sometimes we miss out on true beauty, so if you didn’t listen to Deep in the Big, the 2018 LP from Rabbit Island, you should remedy that. If you choose not to, so be it, but at least play the video below to hear the her latest offering. This tune comes off Songs for Kids, which was one of Amber Fresh’s earliest recordings, done in a Melbourne kitchen at a friend’s house; it’s since been remastered, though the intimacy of the recording is certainly not lost. Fresh wrote these songs for her niece, who was two at the time, so while they’re gentle and soothing, they also offer this sense of wonderment that’s certain to charm. The reissued album will be available from Bedroom Suck Records on April 24th.

Morningwhim Share Most of the Sun Shines

I couldn’t imagine a better way to start your day then to plug this delightful track from Morningwhim, the next release from Fastcut Records. This Japanese quartet seem steeped in the history of pop music; they bring delighting harmonies from every corner of this track, taking the song’s title and shining most of the sun on the listener. The circular jangle that crafts huge emotional swells is omnipresent; it’s steadied and purposeful, serving as the perfect backdrop for the sugary drip of the vocals. Man, such a charmer. This song appears on a 7″ that will pop up on Record Store Day.

So, I am thinking of starting a tech talk portion of the site as we provide you content to jam, but maybe you need a little insight into playback and enjoying your jams. First post, probably going to be about listening anywhere. Simple, cost effective ways to get better sound that will crush your included earbuds? I’m gonna do it.

Anyway, Here is a little jam from NITE. It is super 80’s and you clearly hear a ton of influences from bands they love triggered by a David Lynch binge. It is a pop song with a dark lyrical undertone, so be careful with the jubilant sing along. The new record is called Sleepless and is out 4/17.
