Crunchy Guitar Pop from Joy Cleaner

I know that somewhere out there is a huge group of folks clamoring for someone to give them the gift of glorious guitar pop along the lines of the Teenage Fanclub…look no further friends because here’s brand new Joy Cleaner. This brand new ditty comes across with these huge crunching guitars, bordering on speaker-breaking. But, that quickly subsides, bringing in the melodic pop side of things that made acts like TFC so special; it gives the listener this great cocoon of warmth while still feeling like the track’s got something heavy going on throughout. Call it college radio, call it alternative, but you’re going to call it good because plain and simple, it very much is. Look for the new You’re So Jaded LP from Jigsaw Records very soon!

United Waters Share Track from Coma to Coma

It’s great stumbling into your morning and realizing that you’ve got a new band to take you down a wormhole, as is the case with United Waters after the announcement of their 4th LP, Coma to Coma. For starters, I love this song, so where was I on LPs 1-3? Secondly, listen to this damn song! It has this woozy dream pop vibe going on, which I think ties it immediately to this modern period of darkly tinged bedroom pop stylings. But, the song has this slow burning post-punk vocal delivery; I keep imagining it as Jim Reid’s spirit finding a new host. Slight uptick just before the 2 minute mark is there, you just gotta give it a close ear. Coma to Coma will be out on Drawing Room Records on November 8th.

Young Guv Shares Caught Lookin

It seems at this point that Young Guv can sort of do what he wants, and deservedly so I’d say. Today, he dropped a tune that’s quite a digression from the first single off the forthcoming Guv II, his follow up to Guv I, which was released earlier this year. Sure, there’s some interesting guitar work, but it definitely takes a back seek to the sleek slow dance grooves of this new tune; I mean, there’s a sexy sax solo lurking right there in the middle of the song. I love that it gives a completely difference glimpse at what’s inside of the artist here; we can’t all rock day in and day out. Guv II is out on October 25th via Run for Cover.

Marble Arch Share Video for Today

I’ve spent a lot of time this year praising Marble Arch and their latest LP, Children of the Slump…so why stop there when they drop another video from the album. This tune was one of those really special ones for me when I first stumbled upon this LP; it reminded me a lot of Radio Dept., sort of offering up this spirited pop kaleidoscope that seemed digitally altered whilst also feeling wholly organic. I feel like the video does a great job matching up with that vibe, particularly because of the way the lighting; it feels like the lines of the world are blurred through the lens of pop aficionados, and I’m ever so in love with it. Children of the Slump is available now via Geographie.

 

Romantic States Announce Ballerina

Romantic States came on to my radar with their Take My Hand and Run 7″; those two songs blew me away, which led to my adoration for their follow-up, Corduroy in Italy. Today, the band announce their follow-up LP, Ballerina, putting the band on display as they continue to flesh out their pop sound. If we’re basing this album off one song, it seems a slight departure, or rather, another step further towards intimate bedroom pop. Their last LP showed glimpses of this, but there was still a little jagged guitar dancing in and out of tunes. Here, you really get this stunning performance from Ilenia, coolly sitting with her vocals in this pseudo-croon as she takes on the role of full-time singer; rhythm duties now feature Shawn Durham on drums and Alan Everheart (Wildhoney) on bass. Jim enters with these bright little guitar lines, but they’re really crisp, rather than distorted; I think it comes across as the perfect accent to the vocals, matching the careful delivery of the melodies. Ballerina already sounds brilliant, if you’re asking; it’ll be out on October 16th via Gentle Reminder Records.

Queens based rockers Wives have really been impressing me with their new and upcoming album So Removed. I could probably even go so far as calling it one of my favorites of the year. If you are not a believer yet, I recommend you check out the band’s latest single off the new release called “Servants”. Yet again I am finding myself entranced by the band’s ability to effortlessly pull off an old school, alternative rock sound while still pumping in some freshness with slick beats and production. I like this band.

So Removed will be released on October 4th via City Slang.

Digging New Rosie Tucker

Really excited to know that Rosie Tucker will be making their way to Austin here in a few weeks; I loved Never Not Never Not Never Not quite a bit, as you can tell if you visit this site. They share a new song titled “Ambrosia,” spinning a story of longing around everyone’s favorite salad; it seems fairly mundane, but the wordplay is so spot on that it’s hard not to fall head over heels for everything here. For me, there’s something in the vocal enunciation that just wins; I’m glad all I have one more song to sing at the top of my lungs when the band blast off on a huge West to East tour through all of October, including a stop in Austin on October 9th at 523 Thompson.

Woolworm Announce New LP, Awe

The opening five seconds of this brand new Woolworm track definitely got me; that drum roll moving into those ringing riffs really set me up. I love how the verse came in and offered up a certain softness, especially when that backing vocal sparingly enters the picture. Moving fast, it quickly jumps towards the chorus, where the notes get downshifted ever-so-slightly, taking on more melody and giving off an even softer mood. They call this “Vancouver blanket rock,” and they’re spot on because I just want to snuggle up next to this song and kick back into Tuesday. Awe will be out on November 8th via Mint Records.

 

Dreamy Pop from Ultim Cavall

Man, I’m just totally in love with the Spanish pop scene, whether that’s the jangling sort or the dreamy kind, like Ultim Cavall. Sure, listening to a track in a foreign tongue can be a touch challenging, but if that’s the case, just invest in the overall mood of this song. For instance, this number seems sort of downtrodden and sad; it’s the way the notes seem to be tumbling down a hill. Sure, the steady rhythm section is ever-present to push the song along, but the sensation is always one of the more mellow sort. It’s short and sweet, and super special so give it a go. And of course, it’s available from Discos de Kirlian.

Aquarian Blood Share New Tune + ATX Show Tonight at Vegas

You’d think a band comprised of members of Ex Cult and NOTS (formerly) would have some sort of monstrous presence in a new project. But, that’s exactly why I love Aquarian Blood, and in fact, why I’ve always loved rock n’ roll. This isn’t a banger, or a ripper; it’s a stripped down ballad that’s about as intimate as they come. The vocals are wholly solemn, almost weary from a live well-lived. I guess for me, the band just hit that sweet spot of not-quite folk; you can hear the musical lineage on both sides of the coin, particularly with the great arrangements fleshing out the tune. This tune will be on A Love That Leads to War, the new LP out October 11th via Goner Records.
