Tom Henry Shares But I Loved Her

If you’re missing the classic rock styling of Bolan or Bowie, we highly suggest giving Tom Henry a nod. Sure, the pitch of his vocals has that crystalline quality, but as you’ll hear below, the arrangement work also ties right into the heavenly sound of glam rock. This track has a great set up too, sort of walking with you hand in hand, then breaking free only to burst with the arrangement that lifts the tune into a realm of pop sensibility, with just a little bite. Call it nostalgia or good songwriting, Henry’s forthcoming Songs to Sing and Dance To is going to get a lot of play over here; it’ out on June 27th via Royal Oakie.

Darren Hayman Readies New LP

All apologies for starting off your Friday with such a sobering tune, but new music from Darren Hayman (and his Electric Guitars) is always a pleasure, thus I wanted to begin our day with this sad tune. “Somebody just died” is about as heartbreaking of an opening as you’re going to find, and the song dwells in this solemnity, waiting for the careful craft to unfold along with Darren’s storytelling. He’s pulling these powerful emotions out of his guitar this go round, and in doing so, he’s celebrating the friend he’s lost. The instrumental breakdown, in this setting, feels like a musical salute to the deceased, shooting notes off into the ether. You’ll get to hear this track on Amazing Things, the new LP from WIAIWYA, out later this year!

Tan Cologne Share Infinity Video

When listening through the newest Tan Cologne single, I can’t escape the feeling of being in this dark fairy-land, somewhere akin to the Dark Crystal. Each little note seems to kind of hang, like some bit of magic dust, or in the case here, a bit of ash falling from the skies. And, the more I think on that, the more it feels like a spiritual seance with me dancing around a campfire, my shadow trouncing upon some desert backdrop. Interestingly, the vocals almost seem like they’re purely instrumental, building in texture to the track has this fluttering movement. They release Unknown Beyond on June 20th via Labrador Records.

Subsonic Eye Deliver Another Hit

Boy do we love our friends in Subsonic Eye and their wildly fun take on indie rock meets shoegaze. The band has yet another LP planned for this year called Singapore Dreaming, and we couldn’t be more excited to see how the band has grown across an impressive five full lengths. Prior to the June 11th release date, we of course have some previews. Today’s jam called “My iPhone Screen” comes available on all streaming platforms but also with an intimate live recording as well. Check both out below and hit pre-order on the new album via Topshelf Records.

Lightheaded Return with The View from Your Room

Badassery usually doesn’t need a lot of extra hype, especially with the pedigree of Slumberland Records, but I’ve been all about Lightheaded since their 2023 EP first caught our attention. This group’s ability to spin classic girl-group pop music into a modern day spectacle still catches me every time, and even when it feels like they’re not doing much, you’re still completely under their spell; you’ll understand when the melodic middling of this track comes to light. The vocal bits are short and punctuated, perfectly pieced together at opposite ends to make sure you start and end with pop swoon. Thinking, Dreaming, Scheming will be out on June 27th.

Stream Rose Skin LP from Mariin K

We shared several of the singles from Mariin K‘s newest LP over these past few months, and I just didn’t feel right moving forward without reminding you to check in on Rose Skin. There’s so much variety coursing through the entirety of the record that it’s difficult to imagine not finding at least a handful of the tunes to adore. Personally, I might start with “Beach” as it’s the most pop-centric, albeit in a noisy sort of manner. On the other hand “Easy” seems like a track that folks who love Angel Olsen would be into, but then you find outliers like “Chelsea” that haunt your soul as you go back through the record again and again. You’re going to absolutely love it, and you can grab a copy from Seksound today!

ATX Spotlight: Gustave Ochoa

Per discussions with lots of pals in the music community here in ATX, it’s often easy to get bogged down with the current state of scenes and styles – rock, shoegaze, gimmicks, and what have you. While combing through it all, often it is a welcome change to find an artist who can cut loose from the norm and get back to true songwriting at its core. Really, that’s what Austin has always been about.

If you are yet to know the name, my pal Gustave Ochoa looks to carry on that great legend and mystique of Texas songwriters with his new debut solo EP Highwire. With his lyrics and style, Ochoa is clearly gifting us with a small glimpse into some of the things he holds most dear and closest to his chest. I have always found some of the best and most classic singer/songwriter moments come in those moments of personal vulnerability. You gotta check this one out below or over on Spotify. Stay tuned for heard rumors of more to come.

Jeanines Share What’s Lost Single

Strange that I made a Jeanines allusion in an earlier post, and here we are with another track from their forthcoming LP…which makes today all the better. This song starts with a solid stomp from the drums, letting the track establish some sturdy footing as it soars into pristine pop perfection. Alicia’s voice is just a sparkle of sunshine, and even as she delivers the monosyllabic “la la la” you can’t help but swoon before the sheer magnificence. It’s brevity is my only complaint, as a song executed this wonderfully should be on repeat for the rest of the day. How Long Cant It Last is out on June 27th via Slumberland Records.

Whitney’s Playland Return with Long Rehearsal

Upon dropping their debut LP, Whitney’s Playland received a lot of buzz around the softer indie rock scene. They took some time off, regroup, rest the soul and now they’ve returned with a full band effort for their newest EP. If you’ve been following our site, you’ll notice some similarities to the crisp jangling pop of acts like Jeanines (who also have an LP on the way), though Inna Showalter’s vocals have a sunnier disposition in this presentation. It’s brief and charming, bringing in a breezy bop to your midweek listening rotation. This is just another example of the exciting stuff coming this summer from Dandy Boy Records; it’s out on June 20th.

New Single from Seedbed

While I missed the early single from Seedbed, I’ve long been a JJ Posway supporter, as I’m sure he knows, so this new project is really exciting. There’s still remnants of his last project Scooterbabe hanging out, but perhaps that’s what I hear in the vocals, being familiar with Posway’s voice over the years. What I love is how he’s the master songwriter, but branching out to find friends that fill in the spots perfectly, like the female foil in this song, building in the perfect contrast. For some reason, and maybe it’s because I was talking about them earlier, this tune kind of has a faint American Football blend to it, if they were more romantic and willing to be expansive. Stalemate is going to be a lot of people’s favorite record, dropping June 27th via Tiny Engines.
