Show Preview: Strange Boys @ Mohawk (5/3)

Date 5/3/12
Location Mohawk
Doors 7pm
Tickets $8 @ Frontgate

It’s a bit of slower week for live music in Austin, when you compare it to the craziness that was the last couple of weeks anyway.  A solid option for to appease your live music hunger is a show going down at Mohawk on Thursday night with local veterans The Strange Boys.  Now these guys have earned some praise outside of town, but they still stay true to Austin and play around the city whenever they can.  The undercard of this show is also nice with up and comers The Zoltars going second and fellow local buzz band Leopold & His Fiction up first.  Just do it.

Show Preview: Allo Darlin @ the Mohawk (5/1)

Date Tuesday, May 1st
Location Mohawk
Doors 900 pm
Tickets $8 from Frontgate

Those of you who are in any way fans of great indie pop need to be sure you’re in attendance at this excellent show on Tuesday evening.  Allo Darlin and the Wave Pictures are two of the best UK indie pop acts, and they rarely make it all the way over to our side of the pond.  All Darlin just released their latest record, Europe, and the Wave Pictures put out Long Black Cars in the past month as well.  All you need to do is spend five minutes listening to each band and you’ll know that your attendance is necessary.  Opening the night is No Future, the new reincarnation of the band formerly known (and loved) as Leatherbag.

Psych Fest Preview: The Ripe

Seeing as Psych Fest is going to be taking over Austin this weekend it seems only fitting thta we rep one of the many great Austin bands: The Ripe.  This week the group just released their album, Into Your Ears, on Get Hip Records, and we’ve had a lot of fun spinning it for ourselves over here at ATH.  Just one look at the album’s cover and you might think these guys play on the darker side of the Psych realm, but you’d be asboslutely wrong.  There’s a light-hearted garage feel to what they’re working on, and fans of both modern indie rock and classic tunes will enjoy themselves.  These dudes have gotten some great press from all over the world, so it’s about time people in Austin pay attention, and that means you!

The Ripe will take over the stages at Psych Fest on Sunday, April 28th at Emos at 4:00 PM. See you there!

Here’s an MP3, plus you can sample the band’s whole album right HERE.

Show Pics: Bon Iver ACL Taping @ Moody Theater (4/26)

Justin Vernon won a Grammy. He has left us behind.

It doesn’t mean that many of us wouldn’t jump at the chance to see Bon Iver play a set for an Austin City Limits taping, especially if we got to bring the camera. It doesn’t mean that we no longer like his early material that put him square in the blogosphere’s hype zone four or so years back. Seems like such a long time ago, before the palling around with Kanye and constant mocking at Hipster Runoff, doesn’t it.

A few thoughts on the whole affair and plenty of pics after the break…

Show Preview: Eleanor Friedberger @ Frank (4/28)

Date Saturday, April 28th
Location Frank
Doors 930 pm
Tickets $12 from Ticketfly

This Saturday night with all the deserved hub-bub over Psych Fest, there’s a quieter show on the other side of the highway that people are going to miss out on.  Eleanor Friedberger of Fiery Furnaces fame will be playing a solo set over at Frank.  Her songs are clever, her name’s already established and she’s quite the looker.  But, the bonus band of the night is Hospitality, one of our favorite acts.  They’re out on the road supporting Eleanor and their self-titled album from earlier this year.  And I’d like to note that the sound at Frank is suprisingly incredible, so don’t skip it if you’re worried about sound.  Here’s a jam from Hospitality that will never leave my play list.

Show Preview: Feist @ Stubbs (4/26)

Date 4/26/12
Location Stubbs
Doors 7pm
Tickets SOLD OUT!

It seems crazy that Feist has grown to this insane amount of popularity after humble begins in Broken Social Scene.  I can’t say I’m a huge fan of all of her material, but she can certainly write her fair share of catchy pop tunes that appease the masses.  The lovely lady stops into town on Thursday night at Stubbs in Austin for what is sure to be the hottest ticket in town.  Opening support is provided by Timber Timbre.  This show has been sold out for quite some time so check out craigslist or other such ventures to get a way in.

Show Preview: Bear in Heaven @ The Parish (4/24)

Date Tuesday, April 24th
Location The Parish
Doors 800 pm
Tickets $14 from Frontgate

Just looking at the opening bill for this show at the Parish on Tuesday should get you excited; both Doldrums and Blouse have made big waves in the indie pond this year, earning new fans and much acclaim.  But, the spotlight surely has to be on Bear in Heaven, a band that continues to push themselves.  Their recent release, I Love You It’s Cool, was exceptional in its construction, coming off a great deal brighter than their earlier effort.  You can also be assured that they’ll bring some elaborate lighting/video with them as they did during their recent SXSW performances.  Put that with the always excellent sound at the Parish and we’re all going to have a great night.

Show Pics: Chairlift @ The Mohawk (4/17)

The show preview nailed it. It was Ladies Night at The Mohawk. Magnetic, charming, engaging and technical, playing solo or as the front person – the women on stage controlled the night.

Chairlift was in town for SxSW and played a heavy schedule. Would there be local fatigue? Would their set create a better, more unique experience for the fans? The set up bands, Bell and Nite Jewel, certainly gave good reason to get out and about early and leave some money at the door.

Carry through for more show notes and plenty of pics.
